Mmmm ... from port board
They still got that freak thing happening ?

Most money for clubs comes from the national not local sponsorship. Ie. Promoting brand in a national competition.

The main issue is what crowds would Tasmania get to the game long term. Given they are a parochial footy state, no less than GC or GC.

It makes more sense having a team in Tasmania, than the 9th team in Melbourne.

I guess the AFL has always thought that the Taswegians were a market that they already effectively owned. No need to invest in a side there when the market already tunes into watch the telecasts. I'm not sure they'll ever give a shit unless the state switches off from AFL en masse. To me it seems obvious that North Melbourne be forced to relocate there. 11 home games in Tassie plus no outside Victoria away games for a decade or so. Their Melbourne supporter base can still see them at home as often as interstate clubs get to see their teams without travel.

Interesting when people so far removed from the coal face seem to easily be able to identify the issues and put up equally shallow solutions. "Politics and money" could not be more generalised if you tried !

As a relatively new Taswegian, I have only the insights from people I know who have been around this their whole life.

From the discussion I have been involved in over the last 5 years , it basically comes down to this:

We need our own team, and an academy to go with it. We need the AFL to commit to Tasmania in the same manner that they committed to Western Sydney. The moving population within Tasmania has played havoc with some of the more remote teams ... the resulting TSL problems need to be solved with direct funding from the AFL so playing and coaching talent doesn't get lost to other state leagues.

Sure we only have 500,000 on the island ... but a huge number of those are AFL consumers. Blundstone has 20k capacity, which would more than hold it's own as a venue most weeks for a Hobart based team. Check GWS figures for home games for the first 6 years:

2017 - 12 @ 13,335
2016 - 12 @ 13,121
2015 - 11 @ 10,691
2014 - 11 @ 9,226
2013 - 11 @ 9,701
2012 - 11 @ 10,825

The AFL are treating Tasmania very badly, and they should just knuckle down and create a Hobart team with some healthy startup concessions ... play 9 games in Hobart and a couple up North every season.

It would be supported. It is viable.

I would rather a Tassie team than GWS and GC however, from the AFL's perspective they are looking to grow the game by investing in NSW and QLD. These two states alone equate to approx 1/2 of Australia's population and their is a lot of scope to increase the AFL footprint in NSW & QLD.

The AFL are prepared to bankroll the two expansion teams as it's about maximising TV rights. IMO it's not about how many people attend the games but how many people watch the AFL on TV. The AFL signed a deal worth more than $2.5b so you could say their investment in the two expansion sides has been justified, even though the expansion teams won't be viable anytime soon.

This is why Tassie won't have its own AFL team in the foreseeable future. The AFL already has a significant market share in Tassie and their view would be that they don't believe that having its own team will grow the AFL beyond its current state. As with any large corporation it's always dollar driven.

While I don't agree with it as I would prefer a passionate team from Tassie, whom has a rich footy history than some artificial teams from NSW and QLD.

I would love for the people of Tassie to have the same love for their own team as we we do for the Crows.

Gee, what a surprise! North going into a market, making all kinds of promises, then using it for their own ends and giving nothing back in return. All that's left now is for them to walk away, leaving their latest victim pissed off at them again. It's not as if this has happened before. Oh wait - it has! Twice!
It could be a good opportunity for them to move games to China - apparently it's a boom market

Port tried to back the right horse with AFLW though. They only withdrew because Fagan's genius decision to link with the NT gave the AFL no choice but to select us.
I remember Fagan saying in that interview he did with the guys here on the podcast that the AFL initially never had SA in mind for AFLW and he pushed hard for it.

If this were the case, why do clubs go to such great lengths to increase their memberships each year & strive to get crowds at grounds

Fagan has stated a few times, as others, that the relative success of clubs winning footy games, translates to bums on seats, merchandise sales ......and is the difference to us finishing in the black versus the red

Why then push to move from West Lakes to Adelaide Oval, if everything comes from National Sponsorship and AFL Rights Distribution?
Membership & crowds are still important, but are not the major revenue source... however, what I'm saying is Tasmania would get more support than the 9th Melbourne team, Gold Coast & GWS.

As 1970crow wisely points out, relocating North Melbourne is the logical option, as they would still play many games in Melbourne for their dwindling supporter base there & gain a whole state.

With 22 home games, they could have something like:
9 Tasmania home games
2 Melbourne home games
7 Melbourne away games
4 non-Melbourne away games

Should be able to a deal with other Melbourne clubs to sell membership to their away games, given never sold out.

Effectively end up with good supporter base at most games, except outside Melbourne & Tasmania... & increase overall membership.

It might work for Nth, but not for Tassie.

It needs to be a legit Tassie team, yellow and green and called the Devils (or Apples if the person who came up with the Power is in charge). Then people can get behind it and unite the Hobart and Launceston folk

Are the colours & emblem that important?

They would change name obviously.

But they would still be North Melbourne at heart.

Would you prefer the crows or a relocated Fitzroy
Are the Swans still South Melbourne at heart or have they been fully embraced by Sydney?
