Our club does the same thing by reporting our operating profit.

Depreciation is a non cash expense so I have no problem at all with most of the clubs reporting figures prior to depreciation.

Why do they have to record it all?

I have a feeling that you're testing me so I have to admit that my accounting knowledge is somewhat rusty after 20 years.

From an accounting point of view it's real as every transaction needs a corresponding one on the other side of the ledger so any depreciation/write down of assets is recorded as a non cash business expense.

From an operating profit/loss point of view, however, depreciation has no direct impact.

We, along with most other clubs in the AFL, report and judge the performance of the club on the operating profit/loss and not on the overall profit and loss statement.

I may be wrong on this but, I believe that depreciation is best used when a profit is made so it can go against making a profit and therefore not pay any tax. Maybe it helps in getting the AFL to demand less or give more. As for the smears, they need to show that they can make a profit or the AFL may send them to China, permanently.

It does matter

profits are great, but depreciation is sneaky

You have to make profits after depreciation, or by the time whatever asset you’re depreciating falls apart, you won’t be able to replace it

Don't worry, you can be sure that it will be the greatest cleaning company in the world that opens up new markets for them and delivers more than anything the Crows are stuck with.

As far as the profit discussion goes ... who cares about all the accounting anomalies? Just compare all the clubs under the same rules. Show us what came in, what went out, and how much was left over.

Something like:

Income
- memberships
- gate takings
- sponsorship
- other

Expenditure
- players wages and bonuses
- coaches wages and bonuses
- other football operations costs
- marketing / advertising
- other

Certainly some big corporations have used depreciation to their advantage... Particularly before they just moved their profits offshore, Brown AFC's books would be straightforward without much wriggle room to manipulate (apart from the post footy park write down).
