2008 was the last time Brisbane & Hawks had 2 games in a season - get it this year, but no Melb game again.

Sometimes injury keeps a kid out of his first & 2nd years.

Why can't you be a rising star when you are 20? If you only played a few games, then you are rising!!

The AFLPA does a first year player I'm pretty sure.

That would mean the award, which is supposed to have prestige, would suddenly be limited to probably 10 players who are a chance of winning it. And of those, whoever plays the most games would win it. It needs to have the scope that it does now to be a genuine award.

To be eligible, a player must be under 21 as of 1st January, and have played a maximum of 10 games.

Given that players become eligible for drafting in the year they turn 18, most players will still satisfy the age criteria in their 3rd year. I don't have a problem with 3rd year players being eligible, given the games criteria as well.

It's called the Rising Star award. It's not called the best first-year player award.

And Fogarty may not play 10 games this year, meaning he'll still be eligible for the Rising Star next year.

Bonnar only playing 4 games in his first 2 seasons suggests that he's still developing his body to deal with playing against the bigger bodies of AFL.

If they're a third year player that hasn't played 10 games in their first 2 years, you're likely either a KPP, suffered significant injuries in your first 2 seasons or you're probably not going to be good enough to challenge for the award.

Even Talia managed 9 games in his first 2 seasons (before winning the Rising Star in his 3rd season).

The other option is to make it only available to first year players and have it won by one of the few players that plays nearly every game.
