Competitions 2018 Phantom Draft

No rush: the AFL is predicting 75 picks, so we've got a decent DFA period ahead that'll reveal list balances entering the draft.

Those predicted 75 picks will include, many delisted players. Clubs will be hoping a draftee, is still on the board at a late pick, if not, the fall back position will be a delisted player

OK, we've got our 18.

Those who haven't picked a side will go into a random draw.

So there we go. I will update the OP now.

Jimmae can you run a spreadsheet please, as you did last year?

I guess that means Arr0w is on the clock...

Pick 1 Carlton - Bailey Smith

Position: Inside Midfielder
Club: Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro
D.O.B: 7/12/00
Height: 186cm
Weight: 82kg

Strengths:

  • Contested ball-winning
  • Stoppage work
  • Kicking placement, penetration and precision
  • Work rate, endurance and acceleration
  • Versatility
  • Aggression and hardness at the contest
  • Leadership
  • Accumulator
Weaknesses:
  • Impact forward inconsistent
  • Contested marking
Overview:

Smith's consistency, mix of inside and outside traits, pace, excellent endurance and tireless work ethic bring him into the conversation with the best midfielders available. Starting his underage year as a backman, he progressed to being a fulltime midfielder, highlighted in 2017, TAC Cup contest in Round 14 for Sandringham, with 44 disposals (22 contested) at 72% efficiency with 10 clearances, 13 I50's, 6 marks, 4 R50's, showing his capabilities as a hard running inside midfielder. While Sandringham lost the 2017 TAC Cup Grand Final by two points, Bailey, still only 16, stood up on the big stage with 25 disposals and 6 tackles.

Smith's leadership qualities was acknowledged, being appointed captain of the Sandringham Dragons and Xavier College. His 2018 year started strongly, culminating with an outstanding under 18 championships, which led to AA honours. Smith's season finished prematurely with an achilles bursitis, an injury which he carried from the beginning of the year.

Rational:

While I don't consider Smith the best prospect of this year, rating Lukosius and Blakey ahead of him, I believe he is the best prospect for Carlton's needs. While many have Walsh as the leading midfielder, Smith's mix of pace, balance of inside/outside work, while being able to play multiple positions, is a better fit, for a Carlton side that has a starting midfield that many could describe as pedestrian, pace wise. While the likes of Cripps and Kennedy will be the inside bulls, Smith will compliment a similar playing style to Dow, allowing the likes of Fisher and SPS to play slightly outside the contest, where they would be more damaging.

Considerations:

Lukosius, Blakey, Walsh

If it was me picking

GCS Pick 2 - Sam Walsh

If available at 2 GCS couldn't call his name out quick enough. Gun mid who has been the standout this year. Does everything well and the safest pick in the draft. At a minimum will be a very good player. Smart, finds it, uses it well and for a young kid is a professional.

I see him as the 30 possession creating type midfielder. Will rarely waste it. No real X factor but just a damn good footballer that every side needs

GCS have lost a lot of talent especially in the middle and Walsh will slide right in come Rd One.
