Pick 30 Melbourne pick Luke English

My second pick to be used on another WA lad who has had an extremely consistent couple of years and shown outstanding leadership qualities. He came equal second in the YO-YO test recording a 22.1 and was named on the ball in the WAFL Colts team of the year.

He also won the Jack Clark medal as the best Colts player as an underager in 2017.

GCS - Pick 31 Riley Bowman

Given GCS have picked up Walsh Lukosius Caldwell & Bytel I see Bowman as a good option.

198cm Ruck/Fwd who can play both well. Raw but very athletic and showed some very good signs in the Champs. Will need some time and will test the GCS development but given loss of Lynch and what they had already drafted and got in trade period he is what's needed.

Pick 33: Jacob Kennerley 184cm 76kg, 16/6/2000, Norwood/SA Outside Mid

Hailing from South Australia's Eyre Peninsula Kennerley has put together a tremendous 2018 and done everything possible to put his name in the forefront of recruiters' minds. Kennerley had a tremendous National Carnival where his powerful running and extraordinary stamina along with his solid disposal by foot made him a very damaging player. One thing most people here won't know is that Kennerley finished 2nd, behind team mate Jack Lukosius, for the most marks taken at the U18 Champs. Kennerley was arguably South Australia's most important player after Luke Valente due to his ability to take large chunks of territory off the opposition on a regular basis and make good decisions with ball in hand. After returning to Norwood, Kennerley has continued demonstrate growth and expansion in his game sometimes accumulating more than 30 possessions at SANFL U18 level.

Despite being an outside mid Kennerley showed he's more than capable of sticking his snout in the trough when its his turn to win the contested ball. He could do with a few more kegs, but that'll come with a couple of preseasons. The biggest area he could improve is the defensive side of his game including the amount of tackling he lays. Having said that, he's one of the hardest working players in this draft pool and I'm glad to snaffle him here. Freo made no secret they were keen to keep building their midfield going into the 2018 draft so I'm merely obliging.

That'll likely be it for tonight, though we should be able to rattle through most of the third round tomorrow.
I'd swear pulling teeth is easier.

But the Anti-Walsh BooHiss Club just lurrrrrrvvvves him.:)

Btw, the Kennerly pick fits well with the fast track over in the West i'd think.
More to the point, I don't think you'll survive under Lyon and Bell unless you've got a strong team & work ethic. Harley Balic being a case in point. I like Valente & Kennerley......they're quiet achievers all about "team" and provide the grunt and running power to set up the pretty stuff for others to execute. They play like men.

Pick 1 Carlton - Bailey Smith

Position: Inside Midfielder
Club: Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro
D.O.B: 7/12/00
Height: 186cm
Weight: 82kg

Strengths:

  • Contested ball-winning
  • Stoppage work
  • Kicking placement, penetration and precision
  • Work rate, endurance and acceleration
  • Versatility
  • Aggression and hardness at the contest
  • Leadership
  • Accumulator
Weaknesses:
  • Impact forward inconsistent
  • Contested marking
Overview:

Smith's consistency, mix of inside and outside traits, pace, excellent endurance and tireless work ethic bring him into the conversation with the best midfielders available. Starting his underage year as a backman, he progressed to being a fulltime midfielder, highlighted in 2017, TAC Cup contest in Round 14 for Sandringham, with 44 disposals (22 contested) at 72% efficiency with 10 clearances, 13 I50's, 6 marks, 4 R50's, showing his capabilities as a hard running inside midfielder. While Sandringham lost the 2017 TAC Cup Grand Final by two points, Bailey, still only 16, stood up on the big stage with 25 disposals and 6 tackles.

Smith's leadership qualities was acknowledged, being appointed captain of the Sandringham Dragons and Xavier College. His 2018 year started strongly, culminating with an outstanding under 18 championships, which led to AA honours. Smith's season finished prematurely with an achilles bursitis, an injury which he carried from the beginning of the year.

Rational:

While I don't consider Smith the best prospect of this year, rating Lukosius and Blakey ahead of him, I believe he is the best prospect for Carlton's needs. While many have Walsh as the leading midfielder, Smith's mix of pace, balance of inside/outside work, while being able to play multiple positions, is a better fit, for a Carlton side that has a starting midfield that many could describe as pedestrian, pace wise. While the likes of Cripps and Kennedy will be the inside bulls, Smith will compliment a similar playing style to Dow, allowing the likes of Fisher and SPS to play slightly outside the contest, where they would be more damaging.

Considerations:

Lukosius, Blakey, Walsh

Just looking in at the BF Phantom, he's really time poor and stressed today. I think he's tried to find a minute in the middle of the day to pick here as well but hasn't had the chance.

Might be worth just making the auto-pick, and he should be OK to resume in the 4th round.
