I went to the session today but I can't say there were any real highlights. It's bloody hard trying to identify all the new guys when it's the first time you see them train. Switkowski, Jones, Tabs, Nyhuis, Apeness and Kersten were in the rehab group but as Dudley said Kersten does not appear to be injured, although I did hear him discussing an issue with the fitness guys.
Of the new guys Crowden looked quite impressive, Cerra looked good too. I was expecting a bit more from Brayshaw, being such a high draft pick. It's the first time I've seen him and I was expecting a little more, well I don't know really, a little more "sparkle" maybe. We'll have to wait to see him play to see how good he is because he doesn't have a classic athletic body like Logue or Tucker and therefore he doesn't really standout amongst all the other guys.
Moose looked very good, he was getting a lot of vocal support from the other guys. Fyfe and Neale were very switched on as always, Darcy Tucker was good. I didn't see Cox or Dixon. Hamling was running laps and got a blood nose so I think he finished early. Hughes and Jonno finished the session off running laps. Giro got a bit of the ball in the sims but he looks a little one sided from the little I saw. Brady Grey seems to have taken a step up, he looked very confident throughout the session. Luke Ryan was probably the pick of the bunch for me today he looks set for a big year and definitely looks like he knows he "belongs" at this level now.

Someone in purple boots did quite a few impressive things but I couldn't make them out from where I was. Gut running to take a mark in front of a small pack and a few lovely kicks to advantage. Any other watchers know who?.

Purple boots was Lachie.

My understanding is that Logue was a rower and basketballer who became a footballer in his mid teens. That would explain his lack of footy nous.

footy is no longer about being a footballer, you have to be an athlete first so no biggie. Very annoying annoying but just a fact of the modern game

Can confirm L. Neale in the purple boots. I was also really impressed with Ballaz at training (I will admit I thought he might be done, but maybe the pilates is working). What is the go with Hamling? Had a long discussion with Ross on weds after jogging laps....

Heard you guys flew the parents of the draftees over for this weekend. Good touch.
They all arrived via chartered bus just as I arrived. About 30 odd people being escorted by two freo employees. They had the function room overlooking the training grounds set-up ready for them.

If you read all of his pre-draft stuff this is the knock. Does everything well but nothing spectacular.

Not sure if it is just an aesthetic thing or in terms of impact on the game.

His highlights looked good enough for me. Heres hoping to a very long and successful career.

Better version of Andy McGrath

Definitely a few interesting points. The video mentions Fyfe playing more forward. For what it is worth Fyfe has spent much more time playing as our deepest player in drills in the training I have seen this year. He looks a ton more dangerous in terms of his ability to kick goals (in training that is) when he starts deeper and then leads towards the ball carrier as opposed to playing as a midfielder and pushing forward. Nat is a natural forward who leads brilliantly. If he plays the way he trains I could see Fyfe starting in every centre bounce (when on the ground obviously he needs some rest to) and then pushing forward to play as a forward player who leads towards the ball. At same time Neale/Walters/S.hill could rotate playing a role where they start outside the centre square, but then swap roles and play midfield after the centre bounce is completed. Id like to see Fyfe play a role similar to how James Hird played. His biggest strength as a forward would be that if a taller key position player mans him he could go on long leads and run the player into the ground, while if a tall midfield player mans him he pushes deep and becomes our primary marking target. Either way he is super dangerous.
Sounds similar to the great man Ablett Snr. Played exactly this role a few times. Once against Richmond at the G he bagged a lazy 14 starting on the wing at the bounce then moving forward. Great watch on youtube. I expect nothing less from Fyfe. Should become or second player to bag 10 in a game.

First time I've seen the suggestion that a lack of fitness might improve skills.

Except he is fit, he's just being regeared for more endurance running. More running would appear to be at the expense of foot skills, which have considerably diminished in the game since the advent of the rolling maul.

Just a quick question from a former training watcher myself. How does the pre-season program look this year when compared to others?

I mean this in regards to fitness, skills, endurance and tactics.

Can anyone who has been there in previous years enlighten me?

He was pick 2 in the draft and already jagged a contract extension. I think there are moderate expectations considering.
The most impressive thing to note when watching Brayshaw is his competiveness and ability to push himself. However, he is pretty slight and was one of the youngest player drafted. He doesnt have to play and dominate from Round 1 to be worth pick 2 in the long run. I personally think there is a good chance both Brayshaw and Cerra would benefit from having a decent grounding and build confidence playing quite a few games for Peel before they debut.

In my opinion, there seemed to be more emphasis on skills and ball movement pre-Christmas which is a change from previous years where there was a lot more emphasis on fitness. There may have been less work on tactics as Ross didn't have much control of the sessions. Post-Christmas has been about the same as usual.

This year has more fitness work but also incorporating ball work.
Skills work seems about typical however they are having a lot more handball work especially under pressure.
It is from this point on the attention turns to specific simulations.
This year I think they are doing more in the gym before coming out onto the ground.
Ross seems to have had a greater presence in past years . Hasn't been out on the ground as much this year.
The 2016 preseason was bizarre by comparison. This year would be 10 times the running load. .....ten.

I vaguely remember RTB suggesting in an interview that Cerra and Brayshaw could play a lot of footy for Freo this year, it might have been at the draft. So when I went to watch him yesterday I was expecting to see an AFL-ready type player. But, as you say Sherrif, he's still young and slight so it would probably be prudent to introduce him in the latter half of the year. Having said that, McGrath has a similar physique and he played a lot of footy last year.

Fyfe was half the size of Andy when he debuted, he'll be fine.

I'll grant you he is young but he is not slight. A Rd 1 debut would not surprise me.

Can we read anything into Brayshaw moving his digs from Fyfe to Neale? Noticed Fyfe referred first to Cerra, North and Crowden the other day in the interview. At the time thought he was going out of his way not to favour his housemate.

Not meaning to create a conspiracy theory - at the end of the day you click with who you click with!
From what I remember it was always planned to be this way for Brayshaw. He was always going to live with Lachie after an "induction" period at Fyfe's.

Very enjoyable morning watching the team. Good cafe, coffee, food etc. Impressive. Yeah, there were some cobwebs, but overall they looked ok for mid summer. Grey was really keen to show off. Pearce came out late, Hamling left early. Brayshaw was in everything - he's enthusiastic. Langdon has put on some weight. It was a nice morning.
