Analysis 2018 Team Selection

It's also imperative we finish bottom 6 to have the currency for next years draft bonanza. If we manage this right 2020-2025 could be sweet

I don’t understand this line of thinking. If we are good enough to finish higher with such a young list - that means things are going great. I think we can push for finals if our key players stay injury free. Last year only turned out the way it did due to hard draw and injuries. The draw couldn’t be better this time round.

He's promising enough but there are quite a few ahead of Zurhaar for that forward pocket/half forward role imo. Garner and Simpkin for two are absolutely locks miles ahead of him.

McDonald and MacMillan should be further up the ground as well.

Yeah, can't believe I forgot Garner! He has to be a lock. I agree too that Simpkin will be ahead of Zurhaar in the eyes of the selection panel, but I'm personally not sold on him yet. Saw Zurhaar in Launceston and was very impressed. I think I'm just being hopeful :p

As for Mac/Mc, I think both will still be playing primarily in the backline. McDonald some chance to move into the midfield, but where do you see Macmillan?

I loved McDonald's work up the ground this year and from next season I'm of the opinion that he should be included as a fully fledged midfielder. He's shown now that he's got the inside game but he's also obviously a lovely kick with enough wheels to get on the outside. I think he has all the tools to be a beautifully balanced mid from here on in.

As for Macmillan I've always preferred him up the ground. His one-on-one defensive game is often lacking and there have been a number of times when it has cost us. But he's a lovely kick and a particularly good shot for goal, both on the run and from a set shot. The sight of him running across the 50 arc and lining up for goal is always a calming influence for me because I just know that it's just about automatic with him.

It might be a bit left-field, but with his running ability (which hopefully hasn't been compromised too much as a result of his injuries), his knowledge of running and game patterns, and his positional discipline I think he would be a more than effective candidate for the 'defensive winger,' if you like, role vacated by Gibbo this season. He might not have the elite endurance and gut running ability of Gibbo, but he's shown on a number of occasions that he's a smart player in transition and often knows where to run and position himself to block the exits when the opposition are exiting our forward 50, a trait which was often much underestimated in Sam by the 'OUT: Gibbo' brigade.

Durdin doesn’t strike me as the type to smash the door down. Unfortunately.

He never looked the type to smash down a fellow KPD either, but in round 23 he did just that (RIP The Other BMac).

McDonald will be a mid and JMac wing/back flank.

For a club that is pencilled in for a bottom 4 finish, we look extremely good. Giving Goldy first crack at 2018. If he faulters in comes Pruessy.

Pretty close IMO. I still think JMac will move up field to the wing if fit. Possibly a spot then there for Durdin and we find another mid to shuffle around. JZ forward will be a great luxury as he can also swap at leisure with Higgins - should be a matchup nightmare and Higgins is still better as a free ranging half forward floating through IMO. Not sure Hibberd is there yet and he'd probably be one of the first moved out for new blood that shows form over JLT - or can establish himself obviously.

From your list of starters plus interchange the following need to watch their backs:
- Dumont needs to have a massive pre season and start the season on fire. I rate his old school football ability - strong marking, good shot for goal however if he wants to be in this team in 2 years he needs to either add 10-15% to his tank or become Cunnington like in his clearance ability to be the 2nd group of 4 leader. Balls in his court.
- Turner I rate. Purely on ability to Make s**t Happen (TM). He always seems to achieve more than the sum of his parts which for me trumps any pure stats or anything else. All that said, he needs to keep improving and keep doing this because he pays in the hardest position on the ground and one that is essentially dying when it comes to the specialist small forward role.
- Hibberd I touched on and he has a long way to go.
- EVW I also rate due to his composure and class but he is far from established. Same for Mountford at this point.

From those outside the 22 you have:
- B Jacobs will walk into this team if fully fit and reliable. Nothing surer. You could say the same for Wright I guess but I'd be more worried that his role might have been taken by the time he gets back.
- P Ahern I think will surprise and I think a couple of good games in the JLT will see him in contention for round 1.
- Preuss the other interesting case - no idea how they'll manage that but at least now we can develop him exactly as we need to in the VFL to suit the team and his future.

I agree. There are plenty of spots up for grabs if my starters that you outlined don't perform from the get go. I am a HUGE Ben Jacobs fan, I just want him to have a big pre season and get some match fitness in the VFL before thrusting him back into the AFL side.

Ahern is another we need to be cautious with and is in a similar boat to BJ in regards to getting some match fitness into him as he hasn't played at any level for close to 2 years.

If Goldy faulters even in the slightest and Preuss is tearing the VFL to shreds then BS should make that change with no hesitation.

Very good sides.

I expect Nielsen will start in the seniors at EVW's expense, but there is little between them.

Durdin would be my only other possible change. Probably for Hibberd.

Ahern, Jacobs & Wright, who knows?
