Draft Review 2018 - The 2018 Superdraft

I doubt it - these statements are always said with a degree of certainty, but Walsh isn’t capable of what Rozee is and now the question of whether Rozee’s junior form could translate to AFL has been resoundingly confirmed. I doubt Walsh gets near him if they stay on their current trajectories, which of course can always be impacted by injury etc.

It’s like Essendon supporters who still advocate the club taking McGrath over Taranto or McCluggage. It’s become apparent two of these players (so far) have been in a completely different league.

I dunno why there’s generally so much angst. We knew Walsh was going to jump out of the blocks early with his huge endurance base and our paper-thin midfield allowing him far more exposure than most players are given in their first years.
McGrath been better than Mclucagge this year... He's been fantastic and I used to think he was a spud. Taranto the cream of the crop of that draft but

Walsh is an absolute gun no doubt but in the last 2 minutes on the weekend had to inside 50s were he just turned it over with little pressure.
This is the difference I believe Connor would of won that game.

Anyone arguing about whether their club would have taken a particular player in a redraft should look at it in a different way.

If all lists were vacated, and we restarted with this draft, who do you take?

I think there's solid argument for Walsh, Rozee and Smith right now. If forced to choose, I'd be taking Rozee, very closely followed by Smith as my second preference

Personally I always wanted essendon to take Mccluggage and was disappointed when we didn’t take him, but the there is not much separating Mclug/Taranto/mcgrath. Currently Mcgrath is playing way better football than mcluggage who has been average to start the year and I thought he could’ve been a brownlow sneaky if he continued his rise from last year. The 3 boys will have the same debate around them that the top 3 of 2001 had until Luke ball was crucified by injuries.

That doesn't really solve the problem. We're still talking club football, and too many derive too much (read: any) self-worth from their club and its players to concede the point.

Crazy thing is was rainkine was meant to be the best of that draft...shame we have yet to see him yet

Always take the player who could potentially win you a final.

Right now, in this draft, that player is Rozee.

You can almost always find a Walsh type or Smith type in most drafts.

The Rozee types are harder to find.

2018 - Smith averaged 17.7 possessions Walsh 25.5 possessions.

I think after 2 games in 2020, it’s very premature to be calling Smith better. Rozzee is a different type of player so hard to compare stats.

Yes, but these threads are always about what what you did the last time you played, or what have you done this current season.

After two games this season, Walsh has slipped.

Doesn’t help that Rowell has come in and made Walsh look second rate either.

Look out if Max King can stay injury free, this whole conversation could look very different as to who should be pick 1 in hindsight

Curtis Taylor not going in the first round, like he thought he was going to, will be pretty humorous in a few years.

He’s every bit as good as Tarryn Thomas.

We traded up for him as an after thought because no bid came for Bailey Scott and we had surplus points. Will be one of our best draft hits of the decade I predict.

As crazy as it sounds, I still think Rankine will be the best from this draft. He absolutely toyed with some of these players as a junior, he was a level above for the most part. Hopefully we see him in the next few rounds.

Taylor had some pretty big knocks on him about his attitude and commitment.

The talent was there, question was could he apply himself. If

Knocks on his competitiveness aswell which is massive for recruiters. Also didn’t have any outstanding games where he dominated during his top age year. Good on him for putting it all together, love seeing kids prove people wrong.

Rozee is brilliant and does plenty Walsh isn't capable of, but Walsh is brilliant in other aspects and I doubt Rozee is capable of doing everything he is.

Walsh was a perfect fit for Carlton and he still is. He had a phenomenal first season, is as "bankable" as you can get from a 19 year old, and is already a part of our leadership group.

Yes, he may not be the best to come out of this draft. Yes, there may be a few who overtake him. No, that doesn't mean it was a mistake to pick him or that if the draft was redone today we'd look elsewhere.

It was Walsh then and it's certainly still Walsh now IMO.

So far maybe. But McGrath will be a serious good footballer for a long period of time and I very much doubt there are any Essendon fans (or staff members) who regret taking him.

I reckon there would be plenty who if that draft was redone would take him again and I don't blame them.

I dunno why there’s generally so much angst. We knew Walsh was going to jump out of the blocks early with his huge endurance base and our paper-thin midfield allowing him far more exposure than most players are given in their first years.

There's no angst. At my end it is more bemusement that people genuinely think we've (a) made a mistake with that pick or (b) that one year on we'd do things differently.

We haven't and we wouldn't. We are thrilled with Walsh and rightly so, and so too are Port Adelaide with Rozee and rightly so.

The competitiveness stuff is fairly ironic based on the start of his AFL career.

He’s probably the hardest at the ball of all of our kids.

I guess it could of been the mental side knock, again, I think the draft snub has lit a fire up his ass. He’s pretty fit and based on his body shape, he’s going to fill out into a decent sized unit.

Will take more than two games for Rozee to overtake Walsh’s banked 2019.

As good as Rowell’s 26 and 2 against West Coast was, Walsh had 31 and 1 against the same midfield last season and put up similar performances another 8-10 times, although I can agree he never had a performance as particularly eye catching as Rowell’s his consistency is worth just as much. Let’s not be premature. He is being made to look second rate by nobody regardless of how you think they’ll turn out in 5 years time.

Smith was playing half forward last season so that makes it pretty difficult to compare those stats as well.

Also remembering that the 26 and 2 was done in the reduced game time. Would of been 30+ in a full game.

Some people are massively over reacting to 2 games in lets be honest the weirdest season in our lifetimes.

Rozee is and will be a star, one of the most naturally talented young players in the league at the moment.

But, he has played 2 teams a lot think will be bottom four and even possible bottom two. They have had two strong wins and credit to them they can only beat who they come up against but 2 games against weak opposition is not enough to drastically come to any conclusions to what these players will be long term.

Similar to Walsh having two average games to start the season means next to nothing. We saw last year what he can do and not quite hitting that level again yet 2 games in shows nothing about his future in the league.

Did you miss his 5 goals and 20 touches against Brisbane in his 4th game last year?

Bit hard to judge Walsh because Cartlon’s midfield is so thin. You aren’t stopping Cripps so you can see how plenty of coaches would be putting time into Walsh
Why? He is not that damaging.

If you were going to tag someone, tag someone who really hurts with possession. Also, Cripps has been successfully tagged a few times.

I think you’re underestimating the value of link up players who find space as well as Walsh. Walsh is more talented than Brent Stanton but he used to regularly cop a tag.

Not to mention look at the pay off. If you put some time into Walsh there’s a fair chance the Carlton forward line will have Will Setterfield and Ed Curnow kicking them the ball instead.

Ouch adelaide had 2 cracks at it and neither pick looks anything special....
could have almost blindly picked any one else in the top 20, twice, and had a MUCH better result.

Very happy with Ports 3 selections in the top 20. All playing super well, all with great attitudes to. Already vital to our best 22.
Ports recruiting team has been excellent over the last 4 or so years now and its starting to show. all be it slowly

Walshs offensive kicking isn’t much better than those two. He can absolutely butcher the ball sometimes.
