Mitch Wallis would be a really good option for us, I don't see him as A grade but a level above Bastinac and Bell, is he worth a 4 year contract though? I'd go with 3 with performance levers to trigger a 4th.

I'm not big on Mitch Wallis as I think he is slow and not a good ball user. However, our assistant coach would have a better idea about him than me! I certainly wouldn't give 4 year contract as we could be stuck in a Basti scenario all over again (1 game this year on overs contract (I assume)). If Mitch Wallis is in our best 22 in three years time then my hopes for our team haven't come true.

You mean the guy who would've been a premiership player if not for injury?

Yes - that's the one. The one who got the badly broken leg.
He's no slower or less skilled than Beams. We don't need a midfield with 6 A graders in it. We have 2 decent inside midfielders that aren't teenagers. Adding a third won't kill us.

Adding him might help prolong Beams and Zorko's career. Beams hasn't been consistent this season and Zorko's strengths can be better utilised.

You mean like Vossy did? Or Nat Fyfe? People can play well after a broken leg
I wouldn't use that comparison - bit like comparing me and Ricky Ponting before we both got sconed! Anyway - we all have different opinions. I put up trying to get Tim Kelly a couple of weeks ago and that wasn't well received (some may have changed their tune after his game against Melbourne last weekend).

It wasn't not well received because people don't rate him. It's because the only rumours around him leaving are that he wants to return to Perth.

How about I suggest Bontempelli? Curnow?

But that’s not based on Tim Kelly’s ability - he just would never come here as if he was going to leave it would be to go back to WA. He’s a very exciting player.

Find me one person that doubted his talent before last weekend. The issue with Kelly is retention, retention, retention.

Yep - his family not settled in Geelong. I get that. Believe it or not I knew that the whole time. But thanks for the reminder. I don't see that as an insurmountable problem - in fact it helps with the opportunity (unsettled and on minimum contract). As a club I think you might find we are getting better at coming up with solutions to these types of problems. For example, jarrods dad hasn't missed a game. We need to be able to work through these types of problems to get the players we want because the fact is we don't exactly have A graders knocking down our door. We can't just not try because it's too hard. Do we ask our players to stop trying when things get a bit hard?

So do we put in 10s of hours on each of the 200 footballers at other teams to try and work out a way to get them to our club?

Or do we rule out a player because it is very clear his strongest preference is to play in Perth? And we already knew this a year ago.

I think you've got to weigh up the full picture. If 4 years gets him over the line, then I'd make it happen. This is because free agency for us this year is a genuine free hit. It will only cost us salary cap and list space. We don't have to give the Dogs anything in return. We can get a decent player and still go to the draft with all our picks intact. This means you aren't taking as much of a risk as you would with a trade. Therefore, taking more risk with the contract isn't such a big deal.

While we have to be cognisant of the likely future salary demands of our more impressive youngsters, we also have some of our highest paid players likely to be finishing up in the next 3-4 years. I think we're in a good position to chase a bloke like Wallis a bit harder than we otherwise would.

In terms of our attractiveness as a destination, the last time I can recall a similar buzz around a young list is when GWS started to show their wares. There seems to be universal praise about what we're doing up here. Wallis, at aged 25, won't only be looking at 2019 potential but for the next 3-4 years after that. Assuming he and his manager recognise the potential of our list as the rest of the footy world has, then we'll be in with a shout.

I think we've got a really good package to offer him - a side with recognised potential, off field stability including a highly regarded coach, a clear need for a player of his type and the ability to pay him well over a long period. If he's prepared to move interstate and he isn't chasing immediate success, we've got to be close to the top of the list.

Yeah, I'd do 4 years for Wallis in a heart beat.

Yeah Bastinac hasn't worked out, but why is there this belief that Bastinac is a massive ball and chain around our ankles as a result? Every club has contracted players on their list who are probably in the exit lounge. It's just part of how it works.

God, if we are going to let Ryan Bloody Bastinac scare us of from taking some calculated risks to improve our list and address deficiencies in the future, we may as well close up shop.

You seem to be one of those people who if they don't see results then assume the club didn't put any work into it.

We did our homework on Kelly last year and ruled out drafting him. The fact that his issues are still there means we're not going to change our mind.

It's a yes for me with regards to Mitch Wallis. Happy to get stuck in and win contested ball. Can go forward and kick goals. Most importantly due to injury and missing the Dogs Premiership he should still have the hunger and desire.

At our stage of development its now about getting mature depth to compliment the youth coming through. I like the idea of Beams and Wallis rotating through the middle and resting inside 50.

Spoke to Josh about Mitch Wallis and said he was a terrific bloke. He said it would be hard to see him going as he genuinely loves the dogs, but only a gut feel. Said there would be many disappointed dogs players if he did leave. Regardless of people's opinions about his football ability, it seems like we would be getting a really solid citizen to the club if he came up to Brisbane. I'm all for it.

Think it's pretty obvious that Kelly will be playing for one of three clubs next year...Geelong, WC or Freo. Rule Brisbane out of the equation mate. Would be gobsmacked is he ended up anywhere else.

People weren’t bagging Kelly as a player.

They were being realistic and saying he ain’t coming to Brisbane because he wants to return home to Perth and his family.
