Yeah, I'd do 4 years for Wallis in a heart beat.

Yeah Bastinac hasn't worked out, but why is there this belief that Bastinac is a massive ball and chain around our ankles as a result? Every club has contracted players on their list who are probably in the exit lounge. It's just part of how it works.

God, if we are going to let Ryan Bloody Bastinac scare us of from taking some calculated risks to improve our list and address deficiencies in the future, we may as well close up shop.
Bit unfair regarding bastinac i think. His first year here was ok, dropped beginning of last year. Fought his way back into the team for the second half of last year and played very well in the midfield and going fwd kicking goals efficiently. We won games in that second half of the season with the team showing improvement. This year charlie cameron and cameron rayner have come in to the team playing on that half fwd line he was playing last year, pushing him out of the team. He has consistently been in the best all year for the seconds and has certainly deserved a promotion at times. Fagans preference to play youth and the lack of injuries has prevented that. If we did have an injury list like those of 2015 n 2016 id have more confidence in him than bell, bewick etc playing this year. Still a player capable of playing a roll when needed next year should our injury list blow out.

So Wallis in in lieu of a 4th Round draft pick?

Imo in getting rid of 4 mid age players this off season (Dawson, Bell, Bewick, Paparone) and probably Bastinac and Hodge next year we can afford to bring in one 25 year old on a 4 year deal as an experienced body who at worst case is ready to come up from reserves if needed.

Interesting side note. Wallis is a few months younger than Lester, and a few months older than walker.

I think your bang on. Brissy should be looking to bring in a couple of 24-25 year olds to add some maturity and be those older players in a couple of years time. If we finish 17th id be throwing $3-3.2m over 4 years at jake lyodd and get him in the preseason draft for nothing. I wouldnt throw 4 years at mitch wallis, 3 year deal max.

While I'd love to have Lloyd, surely Sydney will find some more money for him. If they don't nearly every Melbourne team will throw money at him to get him home :(

If they trade Hannebery instead as Jono Brown suggested it won’t be a problem. Not sure Buddy will like his little buddy being traded though

Having another look at the OOC and FA list today with an eye to adding some midfield grunt, small forward with pressure and goal kicking ability, back half run and carry which are the areas I see us as lacking in.

Cam Ellis-Yolmen, Josh Thomas(RFA), Jay Kennedy-Harris, Jake Neade, Anthony Miles, Connor Menadue, Jayden Short, Shai Bolton, Jake Lloyd, Nic Newman, Mitch Wallis(RFA), Tom Liberatore(RFA), Lin Jong.

Pretty sure Josh Thomas re-signed with Collingwood a week or two ago.

Wallis and Lloyd the two best options for mine. But realistically I think we have to head to the draft again and I wouldn’t want to be trading too many picks for players.
Yeah well Wallis would have to be a free agent although I'd give our second round pick for him. Definitely our second pick next year.

Lloyd would be nice but I don't see the need for another small back. Unless we traded Rich or started playing him in the middle.

Yeah I was more commenting on the quality of the group than on necessarily best fit for us. Wallis as a FA would be solid but I think when push comes to shove he will stay in Melbourne.

We went after Lin Jong last year in the Schache deal before he decided to stay. Wonder if we might try that avenue again this year.

Didn't Noble state at a forum or somewhere that we wouldn't be bringing in C-B grade type players and only looking for A graders? Just something to take into consideration when looking at FA and players for trade. Wallis isn't A grade but would still be happy to have him on the list.

No way Noble is trading in duds, but would certainly look at filling depth spots where needed. Doesn't have to be an A grader.

He's also said we'd draft for talent and trade for needs. We need another experienced midfielder. Preferably he'd be Oliver or Cripps but we'd be happy with Wallis.

I don’t mind adding a guy or 2 for depth but the more important thing is:
Years not dollars!

Bastinac got a 3 year deal, we cannot give out these sort of long term deals to B- and C+ grade footballers.. happy with offering them extra coin for 1 year or incentive based 2 year contract (meet playing thresholds in year 1 leads to triggered second year deal).

We cannot afford to sign more long term deals that eat into salary cap space further than 2 years out as we need to preserve the cap space for resigning our young cubs..

Mitch Wallis has been floated and I think he may be better than most of the list fillers we may be talking about but still have to be weary of how many years you sign him for.. a 3 year deal at maximum salary decreases % wise could be an option.
