Work together how? By just letting him walk and accepting shitty compensation?
That's the system, you gotta get over it.

And the idea that a first round pick is the only compo we get is fairly misleading. It also opens up a sizeable chunk of salary for us to go hard at a player in the coming years.

The chances we match a godfather bid would be pretty remote. With Dangerfield the offer wasn't actually that big and Adelaide were happy to match.

Hawks got pick 19 for buddy... Can guarantee you we will take the compo and move on.

We can match any crazy offer if there is an understanding with Gaff that he needs to walk if it’s too much

There are a number of clubs interested in him. If WC really want a trade out of this then I’m sure it will get done

When have eagles ever done anything remotely ruthless in the trade period?

I disagree we can match if the offer is too much , you can't just assume we will be able to make up the 400k difference. The contract isn't just this year, it would be over a number of years, so shuffling the $ might not help.

Feel free to get your hopes up, suspect you'll be dissapointed tho when we take the compo and move on.

We haven’t lost a player of Gaffs value since Judd. We were pretty ruthless back then

So while you are all content to assume that in a rfa situation the club is stuck with the crappy compo how do you feel about Norths trading pick 9 for Polac? Half the player Gaff is!

If Gaff elects to move he is moving. Either as a rfa ir as a trade.

Claremont. New England Patriots.
If we keep Lycett and Gaff the 2010 draft ends up being quite expensive with Gaff, Darling, Lycett and Gov.
And as it should when you nail four studs in one draft ...... do that a few times in a five year period and you get a Geelong / Hawthorn type dynasty.

I for one am all for that.

When matching, do you need to match the exact terms of the deal, or just the total amount over the period? As I suspect we will front load Gaff's deal if he does elect to come, especially with Kelly in the pipeline.

One time we were pretty ruthless was when Mitch Brown wanted to leave but we refused to trade him. I remember we held out quite late on the Cripps deal too and ended up paying fairly little. We can be strong when we need to be, or perhaps only when we’re dealing with the saints.

Anyways, if we managed to turn gaff and lycett leaving into T.Kelly and Powell-Pepper as some are suggesting, I think we’d have made a pretty good fist of a bad situation. Rawlings hasn’t let us down yet, so hopefully he’s still got some tricks left to play.

Good one Beverly H....you just Jinxed us....consider A Gaff as good as gone....
Understandably the most recent dilemmas for Gaff definitely has already tipped the scales to making the move back home to be closer to family a more sensible decision.
Hopefully Gaff & Connor agree to assist WCE to benefit in the draft allowing Gaff go to the club of his choice as a final act of goodwill.

How could North afford both Gaff and Polec?
Our war chest is 3 mil surplus cash per season, so gaff is 1.2 mil, Polec 650, still got 1 mil plus to spare. Add in Aaron hall, 450k. Got around 800k. Next year Waite Thompson gone, hopefully rid of Goldstein by end of 2019, that's like 1.6 mil space freed, walk in Kelly at 1.2 per yr, we still got spares. I'm sure there will b other delisting and more importantly drilling the players into adhering to a salary structure. Existing players get peanut because se they r role players. Gaff and Polec and Kelly r ready established players in their prime who r top players at their respective clubs, they r the next level up, they r the hired guns as the pressure and expectation to deliver big is high.

Heheh please do not include Gaff, Judd and trades in a same sentence ever again. Gaff ain't no Judd so do not expect that kind of return.
I’m not expecting anything like that deal. I’m just saying WC will try to get what’s fair out of this. Something like Gaff to North and we match, Preuss to Geelong and a pick their way with Kelly over here.

I’d say last year’s trade with Gold Coast

However I think we will take the compo pick, which I’m assume will be at best about 15 even if we go out of the finals in straight sets. With Carlton and GC getting priority picks and GC getting Lynch compo, that is the first 5 picks in the draft
