If we do allow Gaff to go to Norths as a RFA then I bloody well expect our ex Norths boys in Simo and Rawlings to get something else out of them as a sweetener.

The best scenario would be something like.

Gaff to Norths we get pick 18.

Goldy or Pruess to Eagles for pick 70 (cap releif so they can bid for Kelly next year)

We send a future first to Geelong for Kelly as they have FS bidding complications this year.

Lycett to Port for pick 9 ex Norths pick traded for Polac.

So out Gaff, Lycett pick 70 2019 first.

In Kelly, Goldy or Pruess, picks 9 & 18.

Hit the draft with 9, 18, 23, 34 and use 75 on Cameron.

Nice draft hand.
Very creatively thought out....where would T Kelly fall into this draft or the following draft?
Would be a bloody good draft if this eventually happens....only can wish:)

If we're going to lose either Lycett or Gaff, then we probably only lose one of them. That would free up enough cap space to pay the other what is required.

The sad thing with all of this is that the Eagles smashed the 2010 draft in the wooden spoon year - Gaff, Darling, Lycett, Gov. It would be a shame to see that quartert broken up without getting good draft picks in return because of free agency. I also think very few in the media realise that they all came in the same draft and that the Eagles managed to ace the opportunities that finished last gave them.

Nope, you shouldn't overpay significantly for anyone just because you've got the cap space.

It's possible that Lycett leaves for a godfather offer that we don't want to match and that Gaff is going regardless of the money he gets offered.

The arrogance of Geelong thinking that their system is so good they can up root a mature player with a young family and move him across the country and he'll be fine. Am I doing this arrogance thing right?

Hackdorn just said its between Port and WCE for Slyce.

Can no one just relax and enjoy the moment? After round 11 everyone was asking can be we win the flag, can we make the GF, etc. Now on the even of the finals all everyone can talk about is trade period.

Imagine if McGovern still hadn't signed up

Free agency was never implemented as fair compensation. It is only partial compensation as seen with Buddy and Scooter. There are anomalies as the AFL continue to only partially address issues and then make up on the run.

We need to only have 1 definition for FA and we need to be able to trade players provided the player financially is no worse off. If the players do not want to travel, then play Amateurs or WAFL equivalent. The players association thru Danger want less games and shorter games. We are allowing our players to be soft cocks off field.

Ability for a club to trade would go a long way to getting fairer compensation whether a player is contracted or a FA

Brian Cook just said he won't be letting young players go to get picks. Used Tim Kelly as an example and he's not going anywhere. We won't be entertaining offers for Kelly in 2018.
Thats not what you just quoted. Cook saying they would not accept picks this year. Thats due to the FS complication.

Doesnt rule out future picks or players.

All part of the trade game.

If Eagles offered Brander the Cats would sign within 60 seconds.

So if Gaff decides he’s going back to Melbourne regardless of $$ and terms etc should west coast call his bluff and match the offer? That would then force a trade and we get better value. If so it would be a good option unless we are screwed if it backfires and we can’t afford to pay him.

The frustrating part of free agency is that clubs are making these Godfather offers purely to blow all the other clubs out of the water so that they don’t have do a traditional trade.
If the $$ and length of contract weren’t rediculous we would have multiple clubs willing to trade with offers of high picks or players.

I just read it. And your quote wasnt accurate btw.

Yep Cook is pretty clear in what he is saying.

Things may well change but nased on that we will be back here next season rehashing the same views.

Oh BTW and would you trade Kelly for Brander?
My quote was accurate. Cook clearly stated Kelly won't be traded this year. He was on radio.

That's the system, you gotta get over it.
Huh?

And the idea that a first round pick is the only compo we get is fairly misleading. It also opens up a sizeable chunk of salary for us to go hard at a player in the coming years.
I never thought of it like that. We should give away all our best players in order to create cap space.

If North are offering that much they should be willing to trade for him.

Just signed up (long time lurker)!

I work with Gaff's Girlfriend and she handed in her notice during the week (She is a PE teacher). She said she is moving to Melbourne. :(
Ah well, I'm sure Gaffy will find somebody else soon enough.
