The Mallen situation is unfortunate but that’s the issue with unbalanced drafting.

Brander looks a natural forward you’d be mad to shift him back.
Think Mallen should be developed to be a defender as well. He's pretty agile and clean by foot for a big guy. 193cm might be a tad undersized but physically strong.

Dual All Australian, best one on one defender in the league statically. We would feel this, stop kidding yourself.

Give him 6 and make the first few years top heavy so if hes shit by 32 the last year payout doesn't hurt? Defenders generally last longer also.
We'd feel it a little bit, haven't said otherwise. He however isn't worth the money and length of contract being thrown around. He is lucky to even be on our list, we stuck by him whilst he continually came to the club overweight and lazy.

Does he want over a million a year?

Sticking point by all reports seems to be the length of the contract, not money.
If he is getting offers of over a million from other clubs he isn't going to take under a million from us.
Our rumoured offer is 5 years and a million a year, now don't tell me that's not a great contract, the extra year wouldn't matter, the fact remains he has been on our list since 2011 for under 100 games, anything over 700k a year is excellent, it's pure greed from him and his manager.

Well if McGovern does leave then throw the money instead at Aaron Naughton ( not sure of his contract ) . Offer 500k plus a year after his second year at the Bulldogs , I think he will be a gun player .

Jarrad Cameron not selected in the initial WA 18s squad probably a lowish pick in this year's draft , South Australian junior Jack Lukosius could be the number one in this year's super draft as they are referring too ....rated very highly in a very good draft , sounds like a forward at 195cm .

Is that the one that is our zone player and the brother to the Brisbane player?

Hope we stay disciplined on the 5 years

We stuck by him during his fat / low effort years. There’s some he owes our club.

If he does get a 6th I hope it’s highly conditional
One thing we have is some depth in quality talls. McG is great but has his limitations - slow decision making etc. Hurn is our best one on one defender. McG isn't great one on one

Thus if McG is so highly valued by others at over $1M he would be brilliant trade bait

Kim Hackdorn just said on 6pr that Gov has made up his mind and he's leaving the Eagles, reckons he's off to Freo on a 6 year 1.2m a year deal.

How does this guy still get air time.
Good luck to him would be getting paid more then Fyfe ....with Sandilands probably retiring they may have the salary cap .

Exactly. That being the case though whats the difference in risk between a 5 or a 6 year deal?

If he wants a 6th fine, its $700k not $1m.
Salary cap has gone up significantly though under the new deal:

The 20 per cent figure, first reported by AFL.com.au in March, will be followed by rises of 1.2 per cent (2018), 1.3 per cent (2019) and two 2 per cent in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-06-20/players-get-20-per-cent-pay-rise-in-new-cba
The AFL Players Association negotiates for players with the AFL on the topic of average salary. In June 2017, the AFL and AFL Players Association agreed to a new CBA deal which resulted in a 20% increase in players salary. The six-year deal, which begins in 2017 and ends in 2022 means that the average player wage rises from $309,000 to $371,000 and the player salary cap from $10.37m to $12.45m. In 2022, the final year of the agreement, the average player wage will be $389,000 with a salary cap of $13.54m.

Given that, I think $1m is ok (just) as the cap has to be spent somewhere... a player on $800k in 2017 could be on $960k in 2018 anyway (if the increase was written into their contract).

Pretty funny how McGovern is a gun until he starts looking around to see what he's worth, then all of a sudden it's 'hey remember all that bad stuff he did in 2014?'
The free agency is tough on supporters everyone knows he is gun player and is vital for our team but 1.2m a year is damn good money plus what he makes off field in radio .

No one is saying he isn't a gun though, the claim is to do with returning some loyalty shown to him when the club stuck with him.

I'd be very disappointed if the club caved and gave him six years and over a million a year, he isn't worth it. He is a defender, not a 60+ goal a year forward or an elite midfielder.

Would be a ballsy move swapping teams in a two team city

Can’t see it myself

I could.
If we are offering a five year, 5m dollar deal, to simply swap teams without having to move houses would earn him an extra 2.2m, that's a lot of Mrs Macs pies.

I totally agree with you on the second point. He's definitely not worth a million for six years or anywhere near it. I would hope the club would set their limit at around 800k for 5 years and then he gets to make a decision about how much it's worth to turn his life upside down and move.

Ultimately it's his decision to make though and I can't begrudge him if he chases the money and goes. In his position I might do the same thing. But the idea of loyalty being a factor here is a strange thing to me - the club picked him and stuck by him because they thought he might turn into a decent player, which he did. That wasn't loyalty from the club though, it was transactional and the club has benefited immensely from it over the life of his contract.
