I totally agree with you on the second point. He's definitely not worth a million for six years or anywhere near it. I would hope the club would set their limit at around 800k for 5 years and then he gets to make a decision about how much it's worth to turn his life upside down and move.

Ultimately it's his decision to make though and I can't begrudge him if he chases the money and goes. In his position I might do the same thing. But the idea of loyalty being a factor here is a strange thing to me - the club picked him and stuck by him because they thought he might turn into a decent player, which he did. That wasn't loyalty from the club though, it was transactional and the club has benefited immensely from it over the life of his contract.
I'd never begrudge someone looking to maximise there earnings, heck I'd do it. If you don't want to call it loyalty from the club (I disagree, it was) then call it faith shown in him, football is a tough game and a lot of players don't get many chances.

If he goes then all the best, I'll not be angry at the club if they stuck to what they believe they are happy to offer and don't get forced into a knee jerk reaction to match what is obviously over paying.

The benefit to us if he leaves is at the very least a round one pick and some cash to splash.

His manager's Colin Young, yeah? Guy loves to play silly buggers. I don't know if Gov'll stay or go, but I wouldn't read into this latest move.

It was Young who had Rosa 'keen to return to Melbourne' every time his contract was being negotiated, wasn't it?
Colin Young is Ballantyne's manager, let's not forget the whole Ballantyne to West Coast is close saga last season which was completely laughed at by Bond.

Hope we stay disciplined on the 5 years

We stuck by him during his fat / low effort years. There’s some he owes our club.

If he does get a 6th I hope it’s highly conditional
I'd start offering 4, then 3 after the bye. Never give long big money contracts to defenders. They're easy to replace. McGovern looks good thanks to the pressure put on up the ground.

Adelaide don't miss Lever, we won't miss McGovern.

I could.
If we are offering a five year, 5m dollar deal, to simply swap teams without having to move houses would earn him an extra 2.2m, that's a lot of Mrs Macs pies.
Not quite - it;s an extra $1.1M at most (when considering tax). And likely only an extra $800k.

Whilst that is a lot - money isn't everything in life - and once you have enough - there is other things that are important.

Either contract should set him up finanically for life. But ultimately as a professional sportsman, his loyalty is to himself and his family.

Ultimately though - if we do lose Gov - we have a guy ready to step into the spot. We would then need to find a lock down key tall.

Adelaide already had a replacement ready to go in Doedee. Leading intercept marks in the SANFL last year.

In any case, playing hard ball by offering 4 then reducing to 3 is a terrible move.
Not only do you guarantee he leaves next year, you'll have a disinterested player this year also.

the loyalty argument is a bit much. Fact is if we didn't rate him or think he could add something to the team we would have delisted him, we didn't keep him around cause we thought he was a good bloke.

Also didn't the the whole fat gate happen at the start of the season and by the end of the season he was showing something ? Pretty much no clubs would have delisted him in that scenario

Totally agree he isn't worth what's being reported though. Personally I am more eager for us to sign gaff asap.

End of 2014 - Emac was our best player and probably the best defender in the comp (might just be my bias). He was 26. Things can turn around pretty quickly for players and clubs.
Gov has also previously shown that he can lose focus and discipline as an athlete, yes he's matured now but once the big money final contract has been signed he might slip in to old habits. NFL players regularly seem to regress after signing a big guaranteed money contract.

I think paying Gov ~8% of the cap is crazy, specially for 6years. Every other decent player in the club has to take unders to accommodate (and they do take unders to stay). We still pay the man and make sure he's set up for life but we don't over leverage ourselves.

If another club wants to pay him 10% of their cap space to poach him then that's their choice but how many clubs in the modern era have splurged on a FA/player and been successful? Didn't work for Carlton with Judd. Hasn't worked for Sydney and Tippett/Franklin... yet (and he's really been phenomenal). It's the same in the NFL, big cost free agents rarely work out.

I don't want to lose him but I don't want to keep him at any cost.

We have replacements for a defender who zones off. We already have options in the team.

Only doing himself harm if he spits the dummy and his form drops, not too many WAFL players get offered 6 year, 7 million dollar contracts.

listened to Haggers podcast and a "Team" has offered 1.25m for six seasons plus the club wanted an acceptance on that deal on which Haggers saying McGovern accepted so its now in West Coasts court to up there deal or possibly lose McGovern . Haggers is guessing its Fremantle as McGovern does not wish to move East could easily be Sydney though as Sydney has beautiful weather .

\ Really its up to McGovern whether he wants the hassle of moving and leaving because we have Gaff and Lycett to consider really our hands are tied .
Free agency is so disruptive to footy clubs can now realise the Geelong / Adelaide situation in previous seasons .

Haggers was right about Sheed missing yesterday morning and today he reckons Kennedy limped into training yesterday in serious doubt and Shuey has hamstring tightness and is doubtful , reckons West Coast have pushed players in the past few weeks to play with some injury concerns .

The fact that we are (maybe) contenders this season, and the development of Waterman and Brander (and M Allen), is making the Oscar over Kelly decision seem more and more irritating.
Agree with that. There will be cries of BEST AVAILABLE and "Do you think Oscar will not be a star" will be shouted back. Reality is that we have reinforced and area of strength that needed no reinforcement and neglected to get someone we needed now. That said, I am surprised at how competitive we are and hence was thinking 2019 was likely to be the year hence my preference at pick 21 to L Fogarty (who is deliver as well - needs another year or so to be at the Kelly level).

Putting this guy on a 6 year contract is a bit iffy.

He's pretty injury prone, and not the world's greatest athlete, 6 years takes him to age 32 and with all the travel and his dodgy shoulders I can see we don't really want to commit that far.

5 years is incredibly reasonable.

Sydney weather isn't beautiful.

Haggers does sometimes get things right, details seem to usually be off.

Still, that's a lot of pies to move up the road.

The U18 list is our for WA. I would be keen to hear from posters that watch the colts games and carnival as to how these players perform. We will be shorter than 2017 but with less 17 year olds.

No need to tell me Hill is a gun - he is already seen as a top 10 pick.

2018 WA under-18 squad
Tyron Smallwood, Rylie Morgan, Jordan Clark, Tom Baldwin, Jack Buller, *Anthony Davis (Claremont); Jeremy Sharp, Trent Rivers, Dillon O’Reilly, Trey Ruscoe, Luke Jackson (East Fremantle); Rhai-Arn Cox, Damon Greaves, Louis Miller (East Perth); Jarrod Fazioli, Jason Carter, Tyson Powell (Peel); Ian Hill, Luke English, Sydney Stack, Ethan Hansen, Deven Robertson, *Elijah Taylor (Perth); Luke Moore, Kyle Hamersley, Regan Spooner (South Fremantle); Wil Hickmott, Luke Foley, Xavier Peacock, *Mitchell Georgiades (Subiaco); Graydon Wilson, Joe Hinder, *Jake Pasini, *Riley Garcia (Swan Districts); Tom Medhat, Tom O’Donnell, *Jaxon Prior, *Ryan Hudson (West Perth).

*17-year-old development player.

Pretty sure clubs are ready to offer him 6 year 7mill contracts for your so called WAFL player if rumours are to be believed.
You really think other clubs would retract their offer because Gov spit the dummy due to WCE's poor handling of the situation by reducing contract year from 4 to 3 simply (5 was our offer apparently) because he hasn't signed by the bye? It does Gov no harm at all.
Matter of fact, it'll do more harm to the supposed excitement amongst the playing group if it's viewed one of their own is being screwed around by club management.

I don't agree with signing him for 6 year on over a million per year. But I don't support childish nonsense from the club by reducing the number of years because we didn't have our way.

is he injury prone tho? He’s played 20 or more games in the past 3 seasons.

“It’s not a distraction. We love Gov, we want to keep him and we’re doing everything we can to keep him. He’s well aware of that. That’s up to the club to work it out, it’s not up to me to get involved.” Simpson on McGovern’s contract talk
