We were all freaking out about our trades earlier on and kept being told not to look at them in isolation. So now that the trade and draft is over let’s review our ins and outs.
Out: Wingard - In: Rozee
There is no doubting this is at least a short term loss for the team. Rozee has all the tools to be better than Wingard and should be more liked by his teammates. Time will tell but let’s face it Wingard has gone backwards since 2015 and wasn’t liked by his teammates. I'm happy to back in Rozee to be the better player in a few years.
Out: Polec - In: Butters
Losing Polec's run on the wing and kicks into 50 hurts the team and will be hard to replace. Butters looks great and adds some much needed campaigner. He will need time to develop but with mentoring from Robbie he has the scope to be a better player overall.
Out: Pittard - In: Duursma
Pittard knew he was no longer best 22 which is why he left. I think it’s safe to say we are all glad we don’t have to watch his brain fades anymore. To me Duursma looks like a wild card. He could be a massive win or a complete loss. He will need time to build his frame but I think it’s a win to replace Pittard with Duursma.
Out: Hombsch - In: Grundy
This is a loss and leaves us without KPD depth. Grundy is very raw but has the athletic ability to succeed. His marking is an asset but he needs to work on his offensive side which is currently non-existent. We did the right thing by Hombsch but this decision will hurt us if we get any injuries.
Out: Neade - In: Woodcock
Easily a win for us. Neade being off our list means Ken can’t play him as our KPF. Splinter knows how to kick goals which is exactly what we are missing in our forward line.
Out: Thomas - In: Cox
Everything I read about Thomas says he is an asset to have off the field. This will be a loss for us around the club. Picking Cox took us all by surprise so hopefully the club know what they are doing with this pick.
Out: Irra - In: Frederick
Irra wasn’t going to make it so it was time to move on. Frederick looks alright but it’s a free hit so worth a shot.
Out: Snelling - In: Pudney
I had high hopes for Snelling when we drafted him but let’s face it he was only ever going to be a good SANFL player. Pudney looks like he could be the massive accumulator that we have been missing since Kornes left. Big shoes to fill but he is a free hit so it won’t be a loss if he doesn’t make it.
Out: Barry - In: Burton
A clear win for us. If Schofield gets his way and plays Burton on the wing then we could have a star on our hands. Hopefully he is over his injury problems which would be the only thing stopping him from becoming one of our top 10 players.
Out: Toumpas - In: Mayes
Unfortunately Toumpas is a bust. He was never the same after his hip problems but was worth a shot. Mayes is an improvement but had a poor year for the Lions. Hopefully a new environment will see him flourish.
In: Lycett
A clear win for us. We needed another ruck so badly this year so it’s about time we got one. Lycett is an average ruck but held his own against Grundy and Gawn in finals which is all we can ask from him. We need to be careful as he is injury prone and only played his first full season this year. Ryder is shot and will likely retire after next season. With some luck we should have at least 1 fit ruck available each game next year which will finally enable us to retain our structure.
How did we do overall?
We removed some experience from the team which is always going to hurt. Some might say we cut out a cancer but time will tell whether we got it all or if there is still more to remove.
The players we added look great and fill our needs. We have some new experienced players in Lycett, Burton and Mayes who could all have an impact. Lycett in particular will enable us to keep our structure which is massive for the team.
Our draftees ooze potential and add some much needed excitement after our departures. Combined with our last 2 years of draftees we have a large bunch of kids ready to fight for the vacant positions which can only be a good thing. Next year looks like we’re going to see the emergence of some new best 22 players.
I think we did the best we could this through the trade and draft. But let’s face it, all the new blood in the team will mean nothing if we don’t come out next year with a better game plan.
