but did the age article says that getting thomas is quite difficult as we need to get rid of atley so our points r bumped high enough to net him if there is a top 5 bid on this guy.
Even if he's bid on in top-5 we have enough points to get him.

I don't know the exact math but say we have pick 12 and the bid is pick 5. Tarryn would cost us our 1st and 2nd (rough maths).

It makes complete sense if we manage to nab Gaff or Sloane via free agency but away from that I think we have other avenues into another second rounder.
If we nab a FA we don’t get any compensation for Atley if he leaves via FA. The only way we could get something for him would be to match the bid and then trade him.

Then it must be true.

A side with Tarryn Thomas (if he makes it good) and Atley in it would be better than side with just one of them. Like you say one guy won't fix our problems and that saviour mentality is no good - we actually had our Wayne Carey, now we need to build good, well balanced sides - but Thomas will add alot to something that is already better than anyone expected.

I think there's a lot of merit to the idea of us going to someone like an Adam Cerra's management (and other recently drafted Victorian midfielders) and saying look, we've got the means to bring you home this year, into a side on the way up, with a healthy pay cheque as well. Take it or leave it. Guys like Cerra, Brodie, McLuggage etc would have to be tempted by that, and unless we can lure a Josh Kelly/ Ollie Wines type I reckon it would be worth us taking the punt on a highly rated midfielder who's living away from home in a struggling side.

Brayshaw needs to be the priority if we are looking to trade our first. De-Goey a close 2nd.

Gaff as a Free Agent. TT with our first pick in the draft. Scott with our 2nd.

Pick up the best state league key forward forward and Crocker in the rookie draft and we’ll be flying

Couldn't agree more.

Apart from Tom Boyd, which other top 10 draftee has been traded after 1 year in the system? It just doesn't happen.
How many were melbourne based players picked by an interstate team? How many were melbourne based and picked to play on the other side of the country?

I prefer to factor in all the variables.

He wanted to stay in melb and has put off a contract extension. Obviously it'd take a lot to get him but it's far from the relm of impossible.

Freo already dealt with the balic situation. If there's an issue there maybe they'd prefer to deal with it straight away
