Collingwood might not be able to afford Tom Lynch, Andrew Gaff looms as ‘last man standing’

CAN Collingwood afford wanted Gold Coast co-captain Tom Lynch?

That might be the biggest question surrounding the Pies’ interest in the Suns forward as Herald Sun trade gurus Jon Ralph and Sam Landsberger cast their eye over the big names still in play in 2018.

Lynch remains the biggest name yet to recommit for 2019 as three Melbourne clubs firm in the race for his services. The goalkicker’s future came further into focus this week when Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley revealed he had met with Lynch earlier this season.

“What people have said to me is Collingwood have got a really tight salary cap already, they’ve already invested a lot of money elsewhere,” Jon Ralph said.

“So they’re saying to people ‘we’re really, really tight, we’re really stretched to fit him in’.

“Clearly they’re still interested in him but that’d be an issue for those guys.”

Lynch isn’t the only star whose future beyond 2018 is yet to be sealed, with Ralphy and Sam discussing the latest whispers on Eagles Andrew Gaff and Scott Lycett, Docker Brad Hill, Cat Tim Kelly and some premiership Tigers.

Will Bachar Houli and Shaun Grigg earn another contract at Punt Road or could they be tempted to a rival who can promise a longer deal?

“You’re probably a good chance of getting them,” Sam Landsberger said.

“I think Bachar Houli will definitely be on a list next year.”

But it’s uncertain times at the Western Bulldogs.

The club has extended the deal of hard nut midfielder Toby McLean, but the future of plenty of other Bulldogs isn’t so secure,

Geelong firming in race to keep gun midfielder Tim Kelly as Fremantle hopes fade

FREMANTLE is losing hope of securing Geelong midfielder Tim Kelly, believing he will sign a contract extension with the Cats this year.

After 19 disposals in the final quarter of the Cats’ Round 15 two-point loss to the Western Bulldogs, he was again supreme in their dramatic last-term comeback against Melbourne on Saturday night.

His last quarter saw him amass 10 disposals, two inside-50s, a score assists, a classy snapped goal and 53 ranking points.

The Dockers and West Coast would both be keen to secure his services if he decided to move home.

But Fremantle’s information is that he continues to tell Geelong he wants to remain and expects him to do so.

Dockers captain Nathan Fyfe recently said he would love to play alongside Kelly but not at the expense of young talent such as Victorian ruckman Sean Darcy.

Fremantle’s list manager Brad Lloyd is the brother of Geelong football boss Simon Lloyd, who has made clear they expect to re-sign Kelly.

The Dockers missed out on another key target this week when Jeremy McGovern signed on for five seasons at the Eagles.

It is understood that deal is worth up to $1.2 million a season, the same pay rate as Richmond’s Dustin Martin.

The Dockers had told McGovern’s management they would have matched any deals offered by Victorian clubs if he had chosen to leave the Eagles.

But despite missing on another trade target the Dockers will be content to again lean heavily on the draft this year.

Last year they secured Adam Cerra and Angus Brayshaw as top-five selections

Brad Hill seems content to remain in Western Australian despite being linked to a return to Victoria.

He is only two years into a five-season deal and has had a year of controversy that included a series of club breaches in a bar in May.

His management said yesterday that despite continuing speculation he has no interest in a return to Victoria, after being traded for pick 25 by the Hawks two seasons ago.

West Coast’s Scott Lycett will meet with his management in the next 48 hours as a long list of clubs pitch for his services.

He would clearly make more money leaving West Coast but indicated in a radio interview on Sunday he did not want his contract as a distraction entering finals.

yeah Geelong have been pretty good without an established ruck, are you suggesting the quality of our mids would find it just as easy?
No. I was simply stating that you can win midfield clearances without a dominant ruck. Imo a mobile ruckman will be a far bigger asser than a tap out specialist. Look how damaging Dean Cox was. Imo most worthwhile ruckman of recent years.

AFL feels ripe for a salary dump trade to happen soon.

We could take, say, Mayne and a second rounder for, say, Morgan. Frees up a few hundred $k for them to get Lynch and gives us some more currency for bid matching. We would have to spend the money Mayne gets anyway. Win-win. Would the AFL let it happen?

aaron hall the most likely and most suitable get for us. he is like a higgins player minus the injury. he has the pace and is not often injured and would be another addition to our midfield as a run and carry player. We really need a few very good interim player until to we get the likes of Ahern, LDU, Thomas to take over. So the trio of cunnington, higgins and hall looks most satisfactory as the interim stop gap players. Forget the likes of Gaff and the other big names because they wont come over and even if they do they wont achieve immediate success. The richmond and collingwood are immediate success team where we are for the medium term. Other than hall, i would absolutely pick up David Swallow but not too sure about weather he wants to come over as we kinda shafted his old brother. Josh kelly of course if there is any existing under the table deal but that's about it. The 7 times 1.2 million deal will not work until we've actually wont a flag and by then a 4x650k is probably more than enough to get a A grader with the right motivation.

Im not sure on hall, barely played. I can’t hold much stock on someone who can’t get a game at GC

Picking up Hall and only Hall in the F/A front is what I would call a colossal failure of trying to lure star players.

It's like settling for not even second best.
On minimum wage maybe but if we are going to significantly cut into cap space for hall and dalhaus we may as well give up

Are you serious ?

You want to watch C Mayne in a NMFC jumper every week and at the same time help Collingwood nab a superstar in T Lynch ?

Is that your win-win ? Collingwood get a gun KPF that automatically makes them a top 4 side and north get a pick twenty something in return....
