we are balls deep into OLLIE WINES
It's been widely known that both SA clubs would do all possible to increase their first round draft pick booty in their eagerness to nab Lukosius and Rankine etc, so not surprised.

Wines would obviously be worth getting - trade first rounder to ensure TT is a reasonably priced pickup?

Be interesting as well to see how GWS go and whether Kelly gets back in and has a run at it this year. They might be worth discussing a trade this year if things aren't looking as rosy as he imagined and we are doing better. Won't be giving up the same money though if that's the case - roll the dice and sometimes you lose.

Thinking again about our list cuts.

At this stage would think it'd be close to:

Morgan
Nielson
Waite*
Watson

Hrovat, Durdin and Mountford might find themselves in trouble too.

*As he's mentioned himself would depend on his and team form at the time.

Durdin is a 1st round pick, we will probably give him until he is 35 years old.

I would be surprised if we give up on Nielson given Tarrant's and Thompson's age... and the injury proneness of EVW and Daw.

The thing is you could mount compelling arguments for most of the list.

But at least 3 will have to be delisted unfortunately. If they aren't regularly getting into the frame for seniors and/or aren't showing consistent signs in the VFL you'd then you'd think those are the most likely candidates.

Watson would be unlikely but maybe make his way onto the rookie list if the club still rate him.

Well, not to the same extent, KPPs are harder to replace. I understand where you are coming form, he was only given a 1 year deal so I think he has to make the most of his opportunities this year, but I don't think any of our other KPPs have the last-line capability, I could be wrong because I haven't watch a lot of the VFL but it is one thing to float around taking marks in the defensive 50, another to pick up the opposition full forward every week. As far as I am aware, nobody has dislodged him from the full back position. Until someone does, not sure I would be confident that we would be parting ways. If Tarrant gets hurt it is going to be a circus.

Assuming none of the remaining old-timers retire, I think the following would be in a bit of stife:

Watson - Comes out of contract this year, his knee is buggered so he can't really make a case for himself. I agree, might give him a couple of years as a rookie perhaps, the flooding of defensive positions by recruited forwards a barrier for him.

Mountford - Out of contract this year, a bit vanilla. We are looking to chase A grade mid talent, I think anyone lower than Dumont/Clarke grade talent wont survive more than a year or two.

Hrovat - Out of contract this year, haven't seen a lot that I like. A trier but low on speed/skill/scoreboard impact/defensive ability, which aren't great traits for someone his size.

Hibberd - Out of contract this year, a bit vanilla, bit of a Gibbo clone, might be a case for a year or two as a rookie, however, players put down to a rookie tends to be a bit of an elephant graveyard.

Longer shots:
Morgan - Contracted for 2019. Not exactly setting the world on fire in the VFL.

Turner - Out of contract this year, probably wouldn't be getting a lot of games if Garner and Wood weren't as injury prone plus Ahern now going to come into the mix, if he fires then Kayne might be in a bit of trouble, his defensive impact is great, just doesn't hit packs front n' square up forward or impact the scoreboard enough which makes him vulnerable. I would expect him to get a contract.

Atley - Restricted free agent who hasn't re-signed as far as I am aware, might get a great offer which would create space.

morgan is not contracted for 2019- 1 year deal with trigger for a second but no way he plays enough games to reach the trigger
him, nielson, waite are the 3 id say would get cut at this stage

This thread was going very good until last week..... and has rapidly devolved into that scene at the end of Reservoir Dogs where everyone is pointing their guns at each other.

It would help if the manic 16 year old dreamteamers could stay the **** out of it.

Does he? Do we have details on that? The only thing I could find online is that he signed a multiyear contract and Footywire has him down to the end of 2019.

If what you say is true, yeah, he would get elevated to the top list based on his current trajectory.

Jordan De Goey is entitled to find out what he is worth, writes Jon Ralph
JON RALPH, Herald Sun
May 9, 2018 7:30pm

SCAN your eyes over the never-ending list of AFL delistments each year and it tells you what you need to know about player-club loyalty.

Last year, clubs tipped out 91 players through delistments, with dozens more in their prime listed as “retired’ as if it were their choice.

Right now Collingwood and Jordan De Goey’s management are circling each other nervously, hoping they find middle ground over his contract.

But to suggest De Goey owes Collingwood something is to ignore how modern AFL deal-making works.

It is the duty of clubs to win premierships and of player managers to get the best possible deal for their client.

And right now, the market is saying De Goey couldn’t be hotter.

Hot enough that Matthew Lloyd this week suggested he was worth $700,000 a year in a long-term contract.

If that deal is at the club that initially drafted them, that is well and good.

Nathan Buckley on Wednesday drew the picture of the club and De Goey as in a relationship, still strengthening ties after a few “dust ups”.

He said the Pies needed a “little bit more information” before they could commit on a contract.

But if Collingwood won’t pay the 22-year-old on potential, worried about his two black marks, then someone else will.

If you want a reminder of that, consider Essendon’s recruitment of Jake Stringer just weeks after the publication of issues including gambling, adultery and a relationship with a 17-year-old girl.

Jordan De Goey could be worth $700,000 a season, according to Essendon great Matthew Lloyd. Picture: Michael Klein

De Goey’ manager Ben Niall’s declaration in the Herald Sun last month talks were postponed for nowworks twofold.

Not only does it give De Goey enough time to show Collingwood he is worth megabucks, it allows the market to get a sniff too.

Lloyd said he believes De Goey should stay, but believes $700,000 is a fair price to extract him from the Pies.

“I don’t think he’s worth that at Collingwood, but to get him out of there he is entitled to that on his talent,” he said.

“He is probably worth $600,000 to get him out of there but that’s what a club would be willing to pay.”

It is understood De Goey’s preferred position is to stay at Collingwood, but Niall would be negligent not to find out what he is worth.

Collingwood premiership player Mick McGuane won’t comment on what De Goey is worth a rival but he knows what he can do on-field.

“I rate him highly. I reckon he’s such an important player to Collingwood,’’ he told the Herald Sun.

“He has got power, he has got footy nous, he’s clean. He wants to seize the moment, he’s a goalkicker, he has a lot of good attributes a lot of other players haven’t.

“He is a multi-positional player, he can go to a wing, play high half forward, isolate in the goalsquare, he can go into the centre bounce.

“You have seen this year he has kicked clutch goals and watching AFL footy, a lot of players don’t do that.

“And his birth certificate says he still has improvement left.”

St Kilda, North Melbourne and Carlton are looking for exactly that type of player, and all of them have salary cap room to burn.

De Goey has turned his life around through what Buckley called “some tough love over the time,” the penny finally dropping for the No. 6 pick.

He is being mentored by assistant coach Garry Hocking, going out with mates without drinking, is catching lifts to and from training or riding his bike to public transport.

Only 11 weeks ago he was being warned he was on his last chance at Collingwood after blowing 0.095 in a drink-driving controversy and lying about a pub fight.

But unlike those 91 delisted players his talent means he will get more chances.

He is going to get paid, it’s just a matter of where.
