Works in theory but it's harder for bottom/small clubs to attract star players to go to them. You don't see the best players leaving their teams to go to teams at the bottom of the ladder.

I don't think we've had long enough to let the FA economy settle though, plus AFL constant fiddling, compensation picks etc muddy the waters.
Here are some FA moves that would've had different ripple effects through all lists if there were equal salary caps and no compensation picks were issued:
- Swans can't fit Franklin, he goes to a then emerging GWS instead
- GWS now can't make a big money play for Griffin, Boyd trade can't be completed without dogs shredding their list (so probably don't win 2016 flag)
- Hawks poach Frawley with Franklin money but Melbourne get no top 3 compensation pick
- Brayshaw/Petracca draft pairing is split between Melbourne and another club, Melbourne midfield weakened, another midfield strengthened
- Removing 2x compensation picks moves North up 2 spots - take Lever instead of Durdin
- Geelong don't get dubious overvalued compensation for losing Motlop, therefore have to pay 'real' currency for regaining Ablett..
- ..Geelong now have to use their pick in the 20s to trade for Ablett, thereby losing out on Tim Kelly
- etc etc
