Prediction 2018 trade hypothetical thread

The three third round picks add up to 326 points, equivalent to 46. It's not a lot but it's something to add to the Thomas points. It's another 50% roughly added onto their second round pick

The incentive would be more about the fact that instead of using a first round pick on Thomas they get to keep one for next year.

The fact that you believe we will likely finish low again next year already makes it a decent deal for North IMO so I wouldn't be throwing anything more in. I just like the idea of having two first round picks in this draft.
What you need to understand is the new rules that came in to effect last year.

Clubs can only take the same number of picks to the draft as they have open list spots.

So after the trade and de-listing period, North have 5 empty list spots, so they are only allowed to take 5 picks to the draft. What you are proposing is North commit 4 or all 5 of their draft picks to matching a bid on one high end player. North still has 4 more list spots to fill at the draft.

How the rules work is the first pick is committed to Tarryn Thomas, and those later picks once used to match the bid, get shuffled to the very end of the draft, so North end up drafting 4 more kids in the 80's or 90's, after every other club has finished.

Seriously, if you want to trade for Norths first round pick, you need to offer them a package that includes a 2018 early to mid second round pick + mid to late 2018 second round pick, or a 2019 second round pick.

If I was Gold Coast, I would offer the two second round picks they currently hold, for Norths first and third round picks. This works for both teams. Gold Coast get 3 first round picks to draft high end talent, and then they have 3 third round picks to match bids on their own academy kids, headed by Bailey Scott. North get the points to easily match a bid on Thomas, plus have at least one or maybe even two picks still in the second round to draft was reasonably talented kids.

Lol, no way your getting a contracted pick 5 from last year's draft for pick 8.. Keep dreaming
Actually that's a really, really good trade. Especially if Cerra isn't that happy over in W.A.

You could look at Ian Hill and Jackson Hately with your two top 10 picks. Hately is a different type of inside mid to Cerra, a much more athletic version of Patrick Cripps.

Not really, He wouldnt suit the richmond game style but looking at the OP hypothetical trades of other clubs player and how under valued they are just like to see what their opinions are on player that has been on the list for 6 years to see how delusional their thoughts were
Tough luck tonight mate. Could have used a player like Wood.
It looks like the tiges might really struggle if they can't convince Dusty to come back. We really dodged a bullet with that one.

Wood would have been injured and would be back at punt road doing rehab

Yeah You guys really did dodge a bullet by not getting Dusty - Pheww

What is he worth pick 5? You would be dreaming if so in this draft. Also if he chooses to leave you don’t really have the upper hand in the bargaining department. FYI Walsh,rankine,kingx2,lukosius and hill are personally better prospects.
This was your post in regards to Cerra, LDU has been disappointing compared to Cerra and being selected 1 pick prior surely based on your comments above about another teams player you should have an unbiased view of your own selection

Have to ask, is LDU injured? Because I can't remember seeing him play a game yet (not that I've watched a North game, except for last weekend).
No had a few niggles in games but got up the following game. Has about 5 games of AFL under he’s belt did a couple of good things where you go wow he will Be class other than that alittle underwhelming thus far. He tends to skirt around the packs.

Well it’s hard to say as I see LDU a better prospect in the future just due to he’s silk, body shape and the role I see him playing in the future. Cerra is a very good player but to say he is worth pick 5 in this years draft you are dreaming. Picks in the top 10 this year seem to possess a lot of talent.

So back to the question where do you see LDU in this years draft

Really ?

Sam Walsh
Jack Lukosius
Ben King
Max King
Ian Hill
Jack Bytel
Izak Rankine
Nick Blakey
Tarryn Thomas
You don’t get the point of all of this. This is happening because rumours have started he wants to come to vic if so then it’s where he wants to go who holds the power. LDU well he doesn’t wanna go anywhere so personally he is worth easily pick 6. Thomas and Blakey can’t be counted in this.

Thats true for most players... a lot of number 1 picks may not have been in the first couple this year maybe top 5. The number pick is only what one club thought a player was worth at that draft... once in system his value is more affected by his overall performance the longer he stays in system.. up or down. Rookie and late picks can suddenly become worth a lot more and sometimes early pick players can drop. What did Schache go for again?
Freo are entitled to play it with a firm hand as he is contracted ..but considering they are not in their window I wonder if they would prefer to get another player who would be happier there and will not bail in 12 months time.

What would you give for Cerra?

Do you have a link to that rule?. I do remember something like coming in , would like to read it. We have a couple of late picks ourselves in prep for FS... I suspect what we do is promote a couple of Rookies at the back end of the draft. Someone like Henry is getting selected each week could easily be on our main list.

It just depends I wouldn’t go lower that 6-7 too many guns in this draft but let’s say it’s next year he could easily be a lachie Weller type trade. I guess in the end it’s who your trading with and who is there to pick from.

Google is real easy you know. Multiple article about the change brought in, in 2016.

Thanks for that... ..

This means that the number of picks a club holds going into the national draft must match the number of vacant spots on their primary list, with a leeway of two picks as teams must finish the off-season with a primary list of 38-40 players.

Yeah, you can take 7 picks to the draft, but only draft 5 players. But this means you have to run with a primary list of 38 players. Which is not a handicap anymore as teams no longer need to promote a rookie listed player to the senior list to be able to play them.

It does give teams more flexibility at the draft, rookie draft and pre-listing undrafted academy players as Cat B rookies.

However there are some specific rules to being able to pre-list Cat B rookies after the National Draft.

http://www.afl.com.au/afl-hq/the-afl-explained/rookie-players

ACADEMY PLAYERS – ROOKIE PRE-SELECTION

Like father-son players, under the previous AFL rules, Academy players were subject to a bidding system before the National Draft if they were nominated by an eligible club but could not be pre-selected by that club before the Rookie Draft.

Clubs with Academy programs – the Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns, Sydney Swans and GWS Giants – should have the chance to pre-select local talent from the pool of players in their Academy between the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts if those players nominated for but were not selected at the most recent National or Pre-Season Drafts.

The amendment is designed to create incentives for Academy clubs to develop talent by providing opportunities for them to rookie list players for further development.

Only draft-eligible club Academy players who were nominated by their club at the designated time and played in the National Championships are eligible to be pre-selected as a Category B rookie.
