Glenelg product Lachie Neale tipped to stay at Fremantle because of ties to Ross Lyon (Jesper Fjeldstad, The Advertiser, 06/09)

OUTGOING Fremantle football manager Chris Bond believes the strong bond between South Australian star player Lachie Neale and coach Ross Lyon will keep Neale in Western Australia.

“I know there’s been a lot of noise in regards to Lachie Neale, but I’m hopefully very confident for the club’s sake that he’ll stay, but these things do happen,” Bond told Melbourne radio. “I am (confident Neale will stay), but with the news I’ve stepped away a little bit from it, but I also know Lachie’s contracted as well.”

“(Neale’s relationship with Lyon) is incredibly strong and Ross’ strength is definitely his relationship with players.”

Could Cat lead Lions to gun Docker? (Mitch Cleary, AFL.com.au, 07/09)

BRISBANE has doubled down on its attempts to lure Fremantle's Lachie Neale across the country, targeting his junior teammate and close friend Lincoln McCarthy from Geelong.

AFL.com.au
understands the Lions' need for a small forward has turned Brisbane's attention to the Cats' livewire, who was drafted out of Glenelg with Neale in 2011.

While Neale has established himself as one of the competition's best ball-winners in 135 games, McCarthy has managed just 29 matches in seven seasons after a string of injury setbacks.

It is understood the quality of Brisbane's medical team, led by the highly-respected Peter Blanch and high performance boss Damien Austin, appeals to McCarthy.

McCarthy, out of contract at season's end, will have a fight on his hands to maintain a spot in Geelong's best line-up in 2019 with the expected arrival of Western Bulldog Luke Dahlhaus.
Interesting. I wonder if we are looking to play charlie farther up the field?

:poo:Hagdorn Alert:poo:

Haggers says he has some breaking news on Lachie Neale.

"It seems to me that Lachie Neale is all but done and he'll go to Brisbane.

It's a whopping package. Around about a million dollars a year over 5 years."

"Neale's fiance last week sold her hair-dressing business.

Fremantle need to come to terms with probably losing Lachlan Neale." - Haggers

Freo CEO slams 'untruths' around star mid (Sarah Black, 08/09, AFL.com.au)

FREMANTLE CEO Steve Rosich is confident of retaining Lachie Neale, calling reports the star midfielder will request a trade and join the Brisbane Lions "untruths".

"The gentleman you doorstopped at the airport, Lachie Neale [and his partner] were probably just having a romantic trip to Queensland," Rosich told Mix 94.5 radio station in Perth.

"We're very comfortable where it sits, Lachie's a fine young man, 25 years of age, been a terrific player for us and got a lot of good footy ahead of him.

"He's contracted to us for 2019 and we'll remain positive he'll be contracted to us beyond 2019."

Rosich was asked directly if Neale had requested a trade, and if there had been an argument in an end-of-season meeting between the player and his coach Ross Lyon.

"There's a lot of mistruths at this time of year. Categorically no to both questions, and in fact to the second one, our leaders didn't even have exit meetings with the coaches," he said.

"So [it's] a time of year when there's plenty of mistruths and unfortunately that's the case."

Geelong Cats: ‘It’s only natural I’m weighing up future’, says Lincoln McCarthy on Brisbane offer (Damien Ractcliffe, Geelong Advertiser, 09/09)

OUT-of-contract small forward Lincoln McCarthy says he is aware of interest from the Brisbane Lions as he weighs up his future at the Cats.

McCarthy, 24, said he had received a contract offer from Geelong for next year, but was still to weigh up whether a fresh start might be the best thing for his career.

“After a few years of not being able to do what you want to do in a specific environment, you can get a little bit burnt out and that comes in any role,” McCarthy said.

“It’s only natural to review what’s going on in your own sense and there’s no one to blame, it’s just purely you can get a little bit burnt out in a specific environment if it hasn’t worked for you for so long.

“It’s only natural I’m weighing up what I do.”

“I have a decision to make, but it’s not that easy. I’m not a free agent,” he said.

“I love Geelong, all my teammates and coaches and I love living there. It’s purely ‘Am I burnt out or am I keen to keep going?’ That’s where my decision will be.’

Reports surrounding Brisbane’s interest in McCarthy come as rumours surround good mate Lachie Neale exploring a move to the Lions.

But McCarthy said he would explore new opportunities whether or not Neale — who he played at Glenelg with prior to the 2011 draft — left Fremantle.

“We’re both our own players, really,” he said.

“I feel like anywhere you go you become good mates with everyone you play with, so Lach and I are good mates, I haven’t played with him for years, but we’re both making our own decisions on what we think is best for us.

“The beauty of team sport is wherever you go, you end up with 40 or so of your best mates.

“These last couple of months have been all about playing footy, so I guess over the next few weeks I’ll work out what’s going on, really.”

The Neale and Mccarthy sign that “joins the dots” to Lions (SEN, 11/09)

Former Brisbane defender Brent Staker says there is an element of Lachie Neale and Lincoln McCarthy’s potential move to the Lions that joins the dots for the duo.

SEN Time On host Sam McClure broke the news of Brisbane’s interest in Neale, while McCarthy has also been linked to a move up north.

“The Lions, there’s been this innuendo about Lachie Neale and Lincoln McCarthy,” Staker told SEN’s KB and The Doc.

“He (McCarthy) is friends with Lachie, but they both share the same manager. That’s just sort of another thing that joins the dots.

“Their (Brisbane’s) model is obviously about chasing quality players that don’t have to be from Queensland, but if they are it’s a bonus.”

McCarthy played just two senior games for the Cats this season.

These comments from Brent Staker on SEN don’t add much but it did remind me of that kind of quota that the club was aiming for of QLD born players - was it 30%? No talk of that in recent times.

AFL Trade Whispers: Carlton’s $1m-plus a year offer for Dylan Shiel may push Rory Lobb out, Gold Coast’s offer for Jake Lloyd (Fox Sports, 11/09)

GOLD Coast is chasing Sydney defender Jake Lloyd and their hefty contract offer has Lloyd and the Swans at an impasse.

Lloyd is on around $500,000 a year at Sydney, reports Foxfooty.com.au’s Tom Morris, but the Suns are offering him between $100,000 and $150,000 more per season on a four-year deal.

Morris also told Fox Footy that Brisbane was interested in Lloyd, but not to the degree Gold Coast is.

“He’s out of contract at the end of the year. We know that Gold Coast are really keen,” Morris said on On the Couch.

“Brisbane dipped their toe in the water, they’re not as keen as the Gold Coast Suns. But there’s a gap, an impasse, of about $100,000 or $150,000 a year between what the Swans are offering and what the Suns are offering over four years.”

Ultimate AFL trade guide: Who is on the move, which rumours to ignore ( :poo:Jon Ralph:poo: and Sam Edmund, Herald Sun, 11/09)

Lincoln McCarthy

Are the Lions only interested in McCarthy as a teaser pony for best mate Lachie Neale? They say not true, confident they can fix his issues despite only 29 games in seven years.

Lachie Neale

Has met Chris Fagan and some at the Lions believe the Docker star will join them. Yet Steve Rosich is confident he stays. Weighing it all up now. Pick 4 (soon to be pick 5) is about right for him. Lions in no hurry on a decision with trade period still a month away. Dayne Beams is definitely staying.

Brisbane Lions step up pursuit on Lincoln McCarthy (Peter Ryan, The Age, 14/09)

Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan met Cats' forward Lincoln McCarthy in Geelong on Friday as the Lions step up their pursuit of the 24-year-old.

McCarthy has attracted interest from the Lions after the talented forward played 29 games in seven years at Geelong who may be open to a fresh start.

McCarthy, who returned to play VFL finals after another injury interrupted season, has been happy at Geelong and is understood to be still weighing up his options ahead of the trade period.

Despite his injury history the Cats still rate him highly but understand McCarthy, who is out of contract, might decide a fresh start will give his football career a new lease of life.

The Lions are also chasing contracted Fremantle midfielder Lachie Neale who is open to a move north but the Dockers have maintained he is a required player.

Report: Geelong "has been linked" To Brisbane ruckman (SEN, 14/09)

AFL.com.au journalist Mitch Cleary believes Geelong could go all-out in pursuit of an elite ruckman in the trade period to fix their struggles at the position.

In particular, Cleary said the Cats are looking at Brisbane's Stefan Martin.

“This one is interesting. Rhys Stanley has all but secured and all but agreed to a two-year deal,” Cleary told Sportsday SA.

“Luke Dahlhaus is coming in and Gary Rohan. You just think this might be a never-ending salary cap down at the Cats.

“They were exposed later this year when Ryan Abbott had to go up against Max Gawn in the ruck. Stefan Martin has been linked.

“Personally, I think that’s a longshot considering he’s 32, but Chris Scott and his list management team has been known to go for the now.

“Having lost nine of their last 12 finals, it wouldn’t surprise if they are trying to top up and go all out for a premiership.”

Lions coach Chris Fagan ‘hopeful’ of securing Dockers star Lachie Neale (The West Australian, 17/09)

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan says the club is working hard behind the scenes to convince Lachie Neale his future lies at the Lions.

The star on-baller is weighing up lucrative long-term deals from Brisbane and Fremantle, with the Lions reportedly offering a significantly greater sum as they seek to fast-track their rise up the ladder.

Neale remains contracted next season but becomes a restricted free agent at the end of 2019, placing pressure on the Dockers to secure reasonable compensation for the durable South Australian should he decide he wants out.

Speaking to SEN on Monday, Fagan said talks were still ongoing.

“There’s a lot of water to pass under the bridge, clubs will always try hard to keep their good layers so we’ll keep our fingers crossed, keep working hard and hopefully some dominoes tip our way,” Fagan said.

“There’s always on-going discussions with managers and players that go on.

“You’re hopeful that the players that you’re talking to will give your club the nod, and then you hope the deal can get done.

“For a club in our situation, we’re always looking to add A-grade talent that can help our young players improve relatively quickly, and we aren’t on our own in that.

“We’ll just keep our fingers that things work our way and we’ll be able to land some of those players that we have been talking to.”

Cat McCarthy has medical in Brisbane (Daniel Cherny, The Age, 18/09)

Out-of-contract Geelong forward Lincoln McCarthy had a medical in Brisbane on Tuesday as the Lions close in on the goalsneak's services.

McCarthy, who turns 25 next month, is being hotly pursued by the Lions as he weighs up a change of scenery.

The Cat, who is believed to have a three-year deal on the table from Brisbane, has been restricted to just 29 games in seven seasons since being drafted from South Australia.

It’s understood McCarthy toured Brisbane on Tuesday, visiting the Lions’ facilities at the Gabba, and being checked out by the club’s medical staff, particularly pertinent given his extensive injury history. During his time at Kardinia Park McCarthy has variously been plagued by quad, hip, back, hamstring and foot issues.

Geelong are aware of McCarthy’s trip to Brisbane and while still rating him highly understand he may want to leave. McCarthy is yet to formally request a trade from the Cats but he appears to be leaning towards leaving.

Last week McCarthy met Lions coach Chris Fagan in Geelong.

There is added intrigue to McCarthy’s intentions given he is a close friend of Fremantle star Lachie Neale. The contracted Dockers midfielder has also been courted by Brisbane and is seriously considering requesting a trade to the Gabba despite having a year to run on his current deal. Fremantle have been publicly steadfast that Neale is a required player for 2019.

It’s understood the Lions’ interest in McCarthy pre-dates their interest in Neale.

'Heart and soul' player extends deal at Bulldogs (Mitch Cleary, AFL.com.au, 19/08)

WESTERN Bulldogs midfielder Mitch Wallis has turned his back on free agency to re-commit to the club for a further three years.

Rival clubs were informed on Tuesday night they had missed out on his signature, with Wallis opting to stay at the club that selected him as a father-son pick in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft.

Brisbane had been chasing Wallis in an attempt to boost its midfield stocks, while Essendon also flagged interest in the 25-year-old.

The fresh deal ties him to the Dogs until the end of 2021.

Geelong forward Lincoln McCarthy completes a medical with Brisbane ahead of likely trade (Tom Morris, Fox Sports, 19/08)

LINCOLN McCarthy is destined to be traded to Brisbane after the injury-plagued Geelong small forward passed a fitness test at the Lions on Tuesday.

Foxfooty.com.au understands the out-of-contract 24 year-old is planning to formally request to join Brisbane as early as Wednesday.

It would take a monumental back-flip for him to change his mind.

Geelong is aware of McCarthy’s desire to go to Brisbane on a two-year deal with triggers for a third season and has already begun preliminary and informal trade discussions with the Lions.

McCarthy’s medical test was significant due to his long history of injuries at the Cats. The forward has been plagued by quad, hip, hamstring and back issues and has managed just 29 games since debuting in 2012.

Brisbane’s only concern was that he would fail the test, but now he has passed it the club will move swiftly to get the deal done early in the trade period.

What this deal looks like remains to be seen. The Cats may demand a second-round selection for McCarthy, while Brisbane would surely prefer to offer a third-round selection.

It appears unlikely any other players will be involved in the discussion.

What is clear is the two clubs have ample time to orchestrate a fair trade.

Make me a Lion: Cat requests Brisbane trade (Mitch Cleary, AFL.com.au, 21/09)

GEELONG small forward Lincoln McCarthy has informed the Cats of his desire to be traded to Brisbane.

McCarthy, 24, communicated his wish to the Cats hierarchy on Friday, knocking back an offer to continue his career at GMHBA Stadium in pursuit of a fresh start at the Lions.

AFL.com.au understands McCarthy is hopeful of playing alongside close friend and junior teammate Lachie Neale next season, with the Docker contemplating a multi-million dollar move.

Having met with Lions coach Chris Fagan last week, McCarthy is believed to have been sold by the club's fitness staff as he attempts to overcome a frustrating two seasons with injury.

NEALE HAS NO ANSWER ON PLAYING FUTURE AT DOCKERS (SEN. 24/09)

"Fremantle’s Lachie Neale says he doesn’t know where he will be playing next season."

Fremantle ready to land Jesse Hogan ( :poo:Greg Denham:poo:, The Australian, 25/09)

As it will stand at the end of next week, Fremantle will have pick No 6. But they could also have Brisbane’s first selection (No 5) if Lachie Neale is traded to them. Neale is understood to be leaning towards moving to the Lions and rejecting a long-term offer from the Dockers.

Three-way trade discussions begin to send Lachie Neale to Brisbane, picks to Port Adelaide and Fremantle (Tom Morris, Fox Sports, 25/09)

FREMANTLE, Port Adelaide and Brisbane have begun informal discussions regarding a monster three-way trade that will see Lachie Neale play for the Lions in 2019 and could impact the futures of Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb.

Although there is still plenty of detail and potentially late picks swaps to be worked out, foxfooty.com.au understands the crux of the trade will see the Power obtain Pick 4 and the Dockers receive a pair of selections in the top 10.

Under the proposed trade, Brisbane would hand Pick 4 (which will be Pick 5 after Tom Lynch compensation) to Port Adelaide and receive Neale from Fremantle.

The Power would give up Pick 9 and 10 - the latter received from North for Jared Polec – but get Pick 4.

In total, five clubs would be involved in this trade: Fremantle, Port Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and North Melbourne.

The two players involved – Hogan and Neale – are contracted for 2019 but are believed to be open to interstate moves. Neither player will be allowed to leave unless an adequate trade is presented.

It’s understood second and third round selections could also come into play, specifically Brisbane’s Pick 22 and Port Adelaide’s two picks in the 20s. A source close to negotiations suggested one of these selections in the 20s could make its way to the Dockers, who would offload it for Rory Lobb.

Brisbane defender Sam Mayes agrees to explore trade options and eyes possible SA return (Reece Homfray, The Advertiser, 26/09)

BRISBANE Lions defender and first-round draft pick Sam Mayes has agreed to explore a trade next month, particularly if it means a South Australian homecoming.

The 24-year-old brought up his 100-game milestone this season but did not play at AFL level after Round 14 and finished the year in the reserves in the NEAFL.

Mayes is contracted for next season but after his exit meeting with the Lions it’s understood he is open to seeking greater opportunities elsewhere and is keen to return to SA from where he was drafted with Pick 8 in 2012.

Mayes signed a three-year deal in 2016 but the Lions are not expected to stand in his way if they can find a suitor in the trade period, which may see him move to Victoria.

Neale not Lions' only trade target, says Noble (Dinny Navaratnam, AFL.com.au, 01/10)

BRISBANE is waiting to hear whether contracted Fremantle star Lachie Neale wants to join the Lions.

The 25-year-old is signed up with the Dockers until the end of 2019 but is exploring a trade to the Queensland-based side.

Brisbane football manager David Noble was asked by NAB AFL Trade Radio on Monday whether it was a matter of awaiting Neale's verdict.

"Yeah probably. It's got to be his call, from his side of things. We just have to sit back and wait and see how things unfold," Noble said.

"He's probably not the only target that we have at this time of year."

The Lions are also pursuing Geelong small forward Lincoln McCarthy, who has declared his interest in moving north.

In terms of doing a deal with the Dockers, Noble said it didn't just come down to the No.4 selection Brisbane currently holds in the upcoming NAB AFL Draft, although that pick will probably slip down to No.5 after Gold Coast receives expected compensation for restricted free agent Tom Lynch.

"You try to look at what value you've got. Ours isn't necessarily just about a pick or a player. There's lots of strategy that goes into what you do and how you construct other deals that you might be trying to put together," Noble said.

"We've always been a group or a club that is prepared to roll and split picks as well. We've done that at Adelaide, I know (recruiting manager) Dom Ambrogio's done that at Gold Coast.

"That thinking allows you to pick your way strategically through the trade period over that 10 days as well."
