A club-by-club guide to the 2018 AFL Trade period
Draft (first three rounds): 4, 22, 40.

Brisbane’s goal in the trade period will be to secure Lachie Neale from the Fremantle Dockers and they’ve already made it clear they’re willing to put their first draft selection, No.4, on the table. Neale has reportedly been to Queensland to meet with the Lions coaching staff and has informed Fremantle behind closed doors that he’d like to make the move. Fremantle don’t want to lose Neale, but they might be more open to it given the recent rumours that they’re on the verge of landing Jesse Hogan.

Sending Neale to the Lions for pick 4 would give Fremantle two selections in the top five this year which should be more than enough trade currency to bring Hogan home – so if the Hogan talk is true, expect Brisbane to land Neale.

The Lions are also set to acquire Lincoln McCarthy, a longtime friend of Neale’s, from the Geelong Cats. They’ve offered McCarthy a three-year deal, which seems pretty generous for someone with such a poor injury history. McCarthy has informed the Cats he wants a trade there, expect it to get done pretty easily.

In terms of players going out the good news for the Lions is that Dayne Beams has already quashed the rumours he could seek a trade this year and will at least stick around for the next two seasons to fulfill his contract.

Veteran ruckman Stefan Martin has also been linked to a move home, with Geelong interested, but Lions fans will know that Martin being linked to a trade every year is something you can pretty much set your watch to these days. It seems unlikely to eventuate.

More realistic is that the Lions will move on Ben Keays and Sam Mayes this season and likely not get much in return. Keays has been linked to Gold Coast, while Mayes hasn’t been linked to any clubs yet – but Port Adelaide might be a good fit.

Bulldog Marcus Adams expected to join Brisbane (Denham alert)

The Western Bulldogs are set to lose contracted key-defender Marcus Adams to Brisbane during the trade period, which begins next week.

The Queensland destination is a surprise because it had been recently reported that Adams was considering a move home to Western Australia, where he was recruited from WAFL club West Perth.

Adams, who also had interest from Collingwood, was understood to have been offered a four-year deal to join the Lions. His desire to leave the Dogs was a mystery because he only re-signed in May last year for a further three years, taking him to the end of 2020.

Should Brisbane be successful in attracting the big defender, it would allow them the luxury of playing their star back man Harris Andrews in a more versatile “Jeremy McGovern” role.

Also from the above article:

Brisbane were also fancied to recruit contracted but disgruntled Fremantle star midfielder Lachie Neale and Geelong’s injury-prone forward Lincoln McCarthy, who had accepted a two-year offer to relocate north.

The Lions will help facilitate a trade for Sam Mayes back home to South Australia due to a family illness.

Trade Period preview: Who will your club target? (Nick Bowen and Mitch Cleary, AFL.com.au, 01/10)

As every day passes, the Lions are getting increasingly confident of securing Lachie Neale on a long-term deal from Fremantle. His close friend and junior teammate Lincoln McCarthy has already signalled his wish to head north to join Charlie Cameron and boost the Lions' small forward stocks. Geelong's Jackson Thurlow is on the club's radar for another mature body through the midfield and across half-back. Contracted pair Sam Mayes (six games) and Ben Keays (two) could be open to moves away from the club for greater opportunity after being limited to minimal AFL action this year. Stefan Martin's agent Paul Connors is adamant his client is a "lock" to stay at the Lions despite persistent interest from Victorian clubs.

Neale to Brisbane set to be announced next week says McClure (AFL Nation, 02/10)

NAB AFL Trade Radio host Sam McClure believes it’s now close to guaranteed that Lachie Neale will make his way to Brisbane next year.

McClure himself broke the story earlier in the year and with the trade period getting underway on Monday, he now believes it’s a done deal.

“For those thinking Lachie Neale will play for Fremantle next year, you can just about wipe that one out as a possibility,” McClure told NAB AFL Trade Radio.

“My understanding is we’ll get confirmation after the club’s best and fairest this weekend.

“Lachie and his partner have decided that Brisbane is the best fit for them and he will join the Brisbane Lions on a five-year deal.”

Lions closing in on five-year, $4m Neale deal (Mitch Cleary, AFL.com.au, 02/10)

BRISBANE is closing in on a five-year commitment from Fremantle star Lachie Neale, with his official request for a trade imminent.

The 25-year-old midfielder is set to inform the club of his desire to become a Lion as soon as this week with Fremantle's best and fairest to fall on Saturday night.

The South Australian is poised to attend the count, tipped as a hot favourite to win his second Doig Medal.

While the Dockers have been aware of Neale's interest to move across the country for several weeks, he is yet to formalise his intentions on the deal of around $4 million.

It is believed it would make Neale the Lions' highest paid player in 2019.

With Neale contracted for next season, Brisbane would need to entice the Dockers into a trade, with the Lions' first-round pick understood to be on the table.

The Lions' current first-round pick sits at selection No.4, set to be pushed back to No.5 due to Gold Coast receiving compensation for departing forward Tom Lynch.

AFL trades 2018: Fremantle won’t accept Brisbane’s pick No.4 for Lachie Neale (Nick Rynne, The West Australian, 05/10)

The administrator was guarded when discussing the club’s pursuit of Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb, but opened up when asked if they would accept the Lions’ first pick in a trade for Neale.

“If Brisbane saw fit to offer that pick, we wouldn’t be accepting of it,” he said.

“Our first preference in all of those scenarios you’ve just painted is to retain Lachie and we’re clearly in a good position to do that because he’s already contracted for next year.

"That’s our starting point.”

Rosich indicated the Dockers were confident Neale would agree to the extension they have put on the table.

“He’s a fine young man, 25 years of age, resilient player, great player, second in the Doig Medal last year, winner the year before,” he said.

“He’s a very good player. He’s contracted for next year and we remain positive he’ll be at our footy club not just next year but beyond that.”

Freo midfielder Lachie Neale committed to Brisbane trade ( :poo:Kim Hagdorn:poo:, WAToday, 06/10)

Fremantle midfield supremo Lachie Neale is fully committed in his switch to Brisbane in a shock move in what is shaping to be the biggest trade period in AFL history.

Neale is known to have told Dockers officials that he wants a trade after weeks of uncertainty as the star on-baller considered a whopping five-year deal believed to be almost $1 million a season.

It is even understood Lions powerbrokers are prepared to extend his lucrative package to six years to further strengthen appeal to join other Brisbane ball-magnets Dayne Zorko and Dayne Beams.

The highly popular Dockers leader has concluded all negotiations with Lions management and wants to leave Fremantle despite a year to run on his current contract.

He is said to have told Dockers chief executive Steve Rosich of his plans to leave.

Brisbane and Fremantle now head into heavy bargaining on an acceptable trade for Neale.

Dockers heavyweights are expected to insist on getting Brisbane’s first pick at number five and at least a second-round selection in the mid-20s at next month’s draft for the highly regarded play-maker and heart-and-soul team leader.

Neale and Fremantle authorities have wanted to keep any official announcement of Neale’s departure until after Saturday night’s announcement of the Dockers fairest-and-best award for this season.

Trade period outlook: Who goes where? (Peter Ryan, The Age, 06/10)

Brisbane Lions
Picks: 4, 22, 42, 60, 78
Trade Outlook: Active and aggressive in seeking Fremantle's Lachie Neale, the Western Bulldogs Marcus Adams and Geelong's Lincoln McCarthy. Neale is going to take work to prise out of Fremantle but it should happen while Dayne Beams will stay put for next year at least. They also need points for Connor McFadyen, the big-bodied midfielder from their academy.

Ultimate trade guide: Find out exactly who your club is chasing this off-season (Herald Sun, 06/10)

BRISBANE LIONS

GONE: Rohan Bewick, Tom Bell, Claye Beams, Marco Paparone, Liam Dawson, Jake Barrett (all delisted).

IN PLAY: Sam Mayes, the 2012 No. 8 draft pick, wants to return to South Australia to be nearer to his ill mother. There is goodwill between the player and the club and if the Lions can help him get home they will. Port Adelaide appears the most likely destination.

TARGETS: Docker Lachie Neale is the priority and the Lions will part with their first draft pick to get the deal done. But Fremantle wants more. The Dockers’ club championship was on Saturday night so the gun mid is now free to make his intentions public. The Neale deal could trigger other trades involving Demon Jesse Hogan and Sun Steven May. Off-contract Cat Lincoln McCarthy has also requested a trade to Brisbane and a third-round draft pick should get it done.

Cats and Lions agree on McCarthy deal, to be lodged on Monday (Daniel Cherny, The Age, 07/10)

Lincoln McCarthy is set to become a Brisbane player on Monday with Geelong and the Lions having agreed to terms on a trade for the goalsneak.

The injury-prone forward, who played 29 games at the Cats over seven years, will head to the Lions with Geelong’s blessing after requesting a move last month.

In addition to trading McCarthy to the Gabba, the Cats are understood to have agreed to send a third-round pick they received from Richmond last year (currently pick 54), and a fourth-round pick they got from Carlton last year as part of the trade that sent Darcy Lang to the Blues (currently pick 57). In exchange, Geelong will receive the Lions’ third and fourth round selections (currently picks 42 and 60). The relevant paperwork is set to be lodged when trade period opens on Monday. The trade could potentially assist the Cats in landing Sydney forward Gary Rohan, who has requested a move to Geelong to be closer to his family.

McCarthy, who turns 25 later this month, is talented but has an extensive injury history, experiencing myriad ailments including quad, hip, hamstring, foot and back issues during his seven-year career at the Cats. The South Australian, taken at pick 66 in the 2011 draft, was limited to just two senior games in 2018, kicking two goals and laying four tackles.

McCarthy is a good friend of fellow Glenelg junior and Lions trade target Lachie Neale, who has requested a move to Brisbane despite having a year to run on his contract with Fremantle. Star midfielder Neale was named the Dockers’ best and fairest on Saturday night and remained non-committal on his future when speaking after winning his second Doig Medal.

The Lions have also been pursuing contracted Western Bulldogs defender Marcus Adams, who has been eyeing a move from Whitten Oval.

Trade Wrap: Contracted Dog chooses new home (Mitch Cleary, AFL.com.au, 07/10)

CONTRACTED defender Marcus Adams has officially informed the Western Bulldogs he wants to be traded to Brisbane ahead of Monday's opening of the NAB AFL Trade Period.

AFL.com.au understands the 25-year-old notified the Bulldogs over the weekend that he had opted to move to the Lions ahead of interest from Collingwood.

With Adams signed at Whitten Oval until the end of 2020, the two parties will need to negotiate a trade, but the Dogs are expected to play hardball in early proceedings this week.

Adams' offer from the Lions is believed to be a three-year deal which would tie him to the club until 2021.

After an injury-ravaged three years at the Dogs, Adams' decision is based on the need for a fresh start.

With the Lions' pick four touted for Lachie Neale, selections 22 and 40 could be used as part of a deal for Adams.

Lincoln McCarthy becomes a Lion (Josie Fielding, lions.com.au, 08/10)

On the first day of the 2018 NAB AFL Trade Period, the Brisbane Lions have been successful in acquiring the services of Geelong forward Lincoln McCarthy.

The 24-year-old comes to the Lions on a three-year deal after a trade this morning with Geelong.

The Lions will supply the Cats with their third (42) and fourth (60) round picks at the upcoming 2018 AFL Draft.

In return, the Lions will receive McCarthy, Richmond’s third-round pick (54) and Carlton’s fourth-round pick (57), which the Cats already owned.

General Manager of Football David Noble said the Lions were pleased to have gained a new player so early in the trade period.

“The Club has had a strong focus on bringing quality players and people in the age range of 23-26 years of age. Lincoln McCarthy fits that brief and has certainly been a player of interest for us over the past 12 months,” Noble said.

“Lincoln brings a range of skills we can use both through the midfield and as a pressure forward.

“His ability to mark the ball for his size also provides the versatility we are looking for, with our players being able to move through various positions.

“We are very pleased that Linc and his partner Tayla have selected our Club as the place they wish to continue their journey together.

“We are excited about continuing to grow our list for the coming years.”

GWS duo nominate new clubs, Dees shape as realistic destination for May (Jake Niall and Michael Gleeson, The Age, 08/10)

Fremantle have rejected Brisbane’s offer of pick No.5 for Neale, in a move that stalls the potential Hogan and May trades.

The Bulldogs, who received pick No.26 for the loss of free agent Luke Dalhaus to Geelong on a four-year deal, have said they do not wish to trade key back Marcus Adams, who wants to move to Brisbane. The Lions have offered him a three-year deal.
