Fremantle’s stance on Lachie Neale could stop Jesse Hogan and Steven May deals getting done (Michael Warner and Jon Ralph, Herald Sun, 09/10)

FREMANTLE’S hardline stance on trading midfielder Lachie Neale is jamming potential deals involving Jesse Hogan and Steven May.

The Dockers are adamant Neale, 25, will not be traded to Brisbane unless the Lions improve their offer of pick No.5 for the two-time best-and-fairest winner.

They want another mid-teens pick for the gun ball-winner which could unlock the trade week shackles.

Brisbane boasts picks No.5, 24 and 55 but will need to use 24 to land Western Bulldog defender Marcus Adams and believes its initial offer for Neale is sufficient.

Hogan has not publicly declared his hand but could join the Dockers on a five-year deal.

Neale has privately said he has played his last game under coach Ross Lyon.

AFL trade news: Reason behind Fremantle-Brisbane impasse over Lachie Neale revealed (Ben Waterworth, Fox Sports, 10/10)

STAR midfielder Lachie Neale has become “extremely frustrated” with Fremantle as the reason behind the Dockers and Brisbane’s trade impasse is revealed.

However Lions head football David Noble remains confident a deal can be struck between his club and the Dockers, who are keen for Brisbane to up its original offer of just Pick 5.

The two clubs’ inability to strike a Neale deal early is consequently holding up other big potential trades involving the likes Suns skipper Steven May and Melbourne star Jesse Hogan.

Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph told Fox Footy’s The Trade Lowdown on Tuesday night that the two clubs were in a holding pattern over a deal for Neale, who asked Fremantle to be traded to Brisbane despite being contracted to the Dockers until the end of 2019.

“The issue is Fremantle not only want Pick 5 for Neale, they also want a mid-teens pick from Brisbane that Brisbane just doesn’t have,” Ralph told The Trade Lowdown.

“Freo want to pass that mid-teens pick on to GWS for Rory Lobb — GWS are not asking for the world for Rory Lobb because, of course, that salary cap relief. But Brisbane only has Pick 22 — as well as a pick in the 50s — and they don’t want to give it up and they don’t believe they should give it up and they need it (to get Bulldog) Marcus Adams anyway.”

Ralph said there was “lots of anger behind the scenes”.

“Lachie Neale, under no circumstances, will be playing at Fremantle next year,” Ralph said.

“He’s extremely frustrated, (I) feel like there’s an impasse there that he’s not there for the right reasons and maybe he might just come out and say that in the next couple of days.”

Noble said both the Lions and Dockers were “keen to try and get something done earlier rather than later” for Neale, but couldn’t put a time frame on the trade.

He remained adamant the Lions would work hard to secure the dual best and fairest winner’s services.

“We certainly won’t do negotiations publicly, but we’re confident we can get the deal done. We’ve got enough armoury to get the deal done,” Noble told Fox Footy’s The Trade Lowdown.

“It’s great Lachie has clearly selected us to come to our footy club. We’re really excited, but there’s a bit of work to be done with Freo.

“We’ve got a number of areas at our disposal. Trade value isn’t necessarily about picks either — it’s about allowing other clubs to get deals done.”

Noble added that he was confident the Lions could land Adams, despite the Western Bulldogs’ tough stance on the contracted defender.

“We’ll work hard to get that deal done,” Noble said.

Brisbane star Beams keen to get to Collingwood (AFL Nation, 11/10)

Dayne Beams reportedly wants out at the Brisbane Lions.

Damian Barrett has reported exclusively on NAB AFL Trade Radio that Beams wants to break his contract with the Lions and return to his former club Collingwood.

“Beams loves the Lions, there are just reasons now why he wants to break the contract he has and return to the Pies,” said Barrett on NAB AFL Trade Radio’s The Early Trade.

“And it’s only the Pies that he wants to return to.

“There’s no issue with the Lions. He couldn’t be more grateful of what the club has done for him.

“He just, in an ideal world, would like to return to Collingwood if the planets align. But as we know, there’s a contract there for 2019 and 2020 at the Lions.”

Barrett added: “The Lions will be doing everything to keep Beams, and as Greg Swann has been saying, they intend to hold him to his contract.”

Having been linked with a return to Victoria late in the 2018 season, the 2010 Magpies premiership player said at Brisbane’s Best & Fairest night recently that he was keen to remain with the Lions.

“The one thing I kept coming back to was this group and you blokes and I bloody love youse,” he said.

“The amount of support you’ve shown me over the last six months has been unreal … I can’t wait to see us progress as a team and a footy club.

“That was a real driving factor in me wanting to stay here and stick around and I love where we’re going and I love you boys.”

Beams, 28, left the Magpies to join the Lions in 2014 to be closer to his ill father who passed away earlier this year.

Beams remains keen to get back to Melbourne (Peter Ryan and Jake Niall, The Age, 11/10)

Collingwood are refusing to comment on reports that Brisbane Lions midfielder Dayne Beams will look to be traded back to Melbourne to play with the Magpies before the end of this year's trade period, although the 28-year-old is understood to be open to the prospect.

The former captain, who joined the Lions at the end of 2014 and is contracted until the end of 2020, has not officially requested a trade from the Lions and has not told key officials that he wants to do so during this trade period.

But it is clear he intends to return to Melbourne when his contract expires in two years and he wants to play for Collingwood.

Fairfax Media understands he would be open to a trade to join the Magpies in 2019 if it was possible, although there is an acceptance from all parties that Collingwood's current pick 18 would not be enough to get the deal done.

Beams, who has been in Melbourne and attended this year's grand final to watch Collingwood, is understood to have told former teammates at the Magpies in recent weeks that he wants to join them in the black and white again.

AFL trade radio reported on Thursday morning that Beams would request a trade before next Wednesday due to "personal circumstances" and the Lions have been well aware of his desire to get back to Melbourne understanding that he would leave at the end of 2020.

However, he attended teammate Jarrod Berry's shave for charity in Horsham on the weekend and gave no indication he wanted to leave.

However, with the possibility still on the agenda the next consideration is how the deal gets done with the Magpies only holding pick 18 and needing points to secure next generation academy graduate Isaac Quaynor and father-son prospect Will Kelly.

Beams has not requested a trade from Lions says Fagan (SEN, 11/10)

“He has not requested a trade,” Fagan told SEN Afternoons.

“There’s been nothing come through to our club. We’ll be surprised.

“When I got up this morning it was news to me.

“I had a conversation with Dayne post-season during our normal exit interviews with our players, he was bright and bubbly about the future of our footy club and looking forward to continuing with us.

“I’ve seen Dayne several times since, the most recent at the weekend in Horsham, spent time with him.

“He has not mentioned that to me. That news is a complete surprise.

“As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing to discuss.

“They (Brisbane’s list management team) haven’t rang me to say there’s anything to the contrary to the situation as we understand it.”

Fagan added he hasn’t called Beams today, hoping their relationship is strong enough that the midfielder wouldn’t hide the news.

“I don’t want to insult him because I’m pretty sure we have a relationship that if he was feeling that way, that he would come chat to me about him,” Fagan said.

“I’m inclined to think I would have heard from him by now.”

Beams stepped down from the captaincy this season due to mental health reasons, after his father passed away.

“Our club really put our arms around the Beams brothers this year and looked after them through a pretty tough time and they did a terrific job as well, both Claye and Dayne,” Fagan said.

“I’m puzzled by it (reports Beams wants to be traded).

“I have had no discussion with anyone at our club about it. It’s news to me.”

Fagan didn’t comment on what price tag they would place on Beams’ head if he does request a deal.

In response to a question about if Claye Beams being delisted had any impact on Dayne, Fagan confirmed Dayne knew his brother would be let go when he made his passionate speech at the best-and-fairest, where he pledged his allegiance to the Lions.

Ralphy: Freo at the moment offering only 11 and a second-rounder for Hogan but demanding 5 and 18 from Brisbane for Neale. Want to offer unders for Hogan but demanding overs for Neale. Plenty of time to play out, but its a pretty hard-line strategy. Sure it will all get done

Ralphy: They are hopeful the lions will trade beams for pick 18 which they can they ontrade

Tom Browne: I told Chris Fagan in a conversation in May / June Beams was socially telling people he wanted a trade. I understand Beams was telling Collingwood mates even as recently as the finals the same thing. How we got to this point today is bizarre

Tom Browne: - Beams management hasn’t requested a trade
- Brisbane hasn’t received a request
- His management hasn’t refuted today’s or my earlier reports, leaving open the possibility something could happen late

Tom Browne: The Beams camp is effectively willing or encouraging Collingwood to make the first move, and put together an amenable acceptable offer. Makes it look like the pies idea! Clever, because beams recent public stance is untenable / unsellable

Melbourne knocks back Fremantle’s bid for Jesse Hogan and there could be a twist (Jay Clark and Michael Warner, Herald Sun, 11/10)

Melbourne insist any deal for Hogan, 23, will have to include pick No.5, which Fremantle can secure from Brisbane in return for midfielder Lachie Neale.

The Herald Sun understands the Dockers could seal the deal for Hogan if they offer Melbourne pick No.5 and No.23 and potentially a swap of future picks.

But the Dockers are playing hard ball with the Lions over Neale and are saying Brisbane must stump up pick No.5 and another late first-round selection for him.

Trade Daily: Brisbane has rubbished rumours Dayne Beams wants to be traded (Mark Robinson and Sam Landsberger, Herald Sun, 11/10)
DAYNE Beams will play at Brisbane next year, according to the club.

The Lions today rubbished a potential trade of Beams to Collingwood.

It is understood speculation can be traced back to Fremantle, which is in trade talks with the Lions over ball magnet Lachie Neale.

The Dockers want to obtain two first-round picks for Neale and if the Lions released Beams to the Magpies that would likely armed them with pick No.18.

That would allow the Lions to trade picks No.5 and 18 to the Dockers for Neale.

The Lions today laughed at the suggestion Beams, 28, was on the way out.

The Herald Sun understands Beams has not asked for a trade and that his manager Paul Connors will not be asking for a trade on his client’s behalf.

A month ago Beams and the Lions had an honest chat about the potential for a fair trade but agreed if it didn’t eventuate the star midfielder would happily remain at the Gabba.

Lions coach Chris Fagan said today he was not aware of any trade scenario for his All-Australian.

Beams was with Fagan on Saturday and did not discuss leaving the Lions.

Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph thinks the Lachie Neale deal might be driving the Dayne Beams drama (Fox Sports, 11/10)

FREMANTLE’S desire to land a better deal in an exchange for star midfielder Lachie Neale could be driving the Dayne Beams speculation, says Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph.

A shock return to Collingwood emerged early on Thursday morning, although Beams is yet to request a trade to the side he won a premiership for before moving to Queensland at the end of 2014 to be closer to his father, who was battling cancer at the time.

“Brisbane feel like Fremantle is causing trouble here so they can get Pick 18 as part of the Lachie Neale trade. If Collingwood gave up Pick 18 they could hand it on for Lachie Neale,” Ralph said on Fox Footy’s the Trade Lowdown on Thursday night.

“Lions boss Greg Swann labelled it today ‘reheated soup’ and he’s been assured by Beams’ manager, Paul Connors, he hasn’t and will not request a trade.

“One aspect that will be frustrating for Brisbane — he was massively front ended, paid over a million bucks (per season). (He was) amongst the top couple of players in the competition when he started there, but now he is only on $750,000.”

Ralph said Collingwood star Steele Sidebottom, who is one of the Brisbane stars best friends, helped repair Beams’ strained relationship with Magpies coach Nathan Buckley this year, making a return to the black and white a genuine possibility.

“There is no doubt that him and Nathan Buckley have had something of a rapprochement. As the story goes, through Steele Sidebottom they got together and they really worked out their issues,” Ralph said.

“Beams position has been clear for a while, ‘I wouldn’t mind getting back to Collingwood, but I’m certainly not requesting a trade. I think he would like to get back but he’s not desperate.”

Wingard wants to take flight to Hawks (Michael Gleeson, Jake Niall and Sam McClure, 11/10)

Fremantle is insisting they will not part with contracted midfielder Lachie Neale, their best-and-fairest winner, who has asked for a trade to Brisbane.

Brisbane's position is that they are happy to go to the draft with pick No.5 if Neale can't be secured in a deal, and that they also have the option of turning pick five into two first-round choices, with a number of clubs coveting the earlier pick.

The Dockers initially said they would want more than the Lions' first draft pick but then said they would not trade Neale.

Now they are holding firm that they will not trade for Neale. Clubs all expect the Dockers to eventually trade for pick five and that pick would end the Hogan-May impasse and enable those trades.

Trade Wrap: Hawks offer young gun for Chad (Mitch Cleary and Nick Bowen, AFL.com.au, 11/10)

Fremantle's hardline stance on wantaway midfielder Lachie Neale is holding up the potential moves of Jesse Hogan and Steven May.

Neale has requested a trade to Brisbane and the Lions are prepared to include their prized first-round pick, No.5 overall, in the deal.

That pick appears – at the very least – an extremely strong starting point for a trade, especially given the elite top-end talent on offer in this year's NAB AFL Draft.

But the Dockers initially insisted Brisbane throw in another first-round pick, a price the Lions, whose second selection this year does not fall until No.32, believed exorbitant.

New Fremantle football chief Peter Bell has since moved to try to convince Neale to stay and, at least for now, the Dockers are resisting any further talks on a trade.

Fremantle's position is no doubt based on Neale's outstanding record over the past three seasons, when he has won two club best and fairest awards (2016, 2018) and finished runner-up the other year.

The 25-year-old is also contracted for 2019 and rival clubs generally have to pay a premium to acquire such players early, although the Lions could look to snare Neale as a free agent at the end of next season.

Neale is not the only player hoping the impasse can be resolved soon.

Although Hogan has yet to officially request a trade it's understood he wants to join Fremantle, but as the Dockers try to construct a deal for him their prospective trade partner, Melbourne, has its eyes firmly on the Lions' pick No.5.

On Thursday morning, AFL.com.au's Damian Barrett reported former Brisbane captain Dayne Beams wanted to return to Collingwood despite being contracted with the Lions for the next two years.

It was stunning news following Beams' emotional speech at the Lions' best and fairest count last month when he reaffirmed his commitment to the club.

However, Beams is far from a certainty to make his way back to the Holden Centre this year.

For starters, the 2010 premiership player is yet to request a trade.

Even if he does, the Lions would understandably want to exact a high price after giving up picks No.5, No.25 and Jack Crisp four years ago for Beams.

Given the Magpies' first pick in this year's draft does not fall until No.18, it's hard to see how they'll convince Brisbane to part with Beams two years early.

AFL trade: News, rumours, live updates, Day 5 trade period live chat and blog (Fox Sports, 12/10)

Wantaway star Lachie Neale met with new Fremantle footy boss Peter Bell on Wednesday - the first meeting between the pair.

Foxfooty.com.au’s Tom Morris reports Bell believed he could convince Neale to stay at the club, but he failed to do so with the midfielder remaining “adamant” he wants to head to Brisbane.

“It was Peter Bell’s belief that he was going to be able to get him to turn around and say ‘yep, I’ll stay at Fremantle’,” Morris said on Fox Footy’s The Trade Lowdown.

“Lachie Neale listened and said, no, actually I really want to go to Brisbane.”

But this comes as the Dockers continue to play hardball on any potential train with the Lions.

Fremantle wants Pick 5 and another first round pick from the Lions, but Brisbane does not hold another pick between 5 and 32.

The Dockers were successful in a similar hard line stance last trade period when they somehow convinced Gold Coast to give up Pick 2 for Lachie Weller.

And now the Dockers’ call on Neale comes amid claims the trade for Jesse Hogan from Melbourne could “fall apart” because of Fremantle’s low offer.

Fremantle want Hogan in exchange for Pick 11 and a future second round pick.

“Isn’t it interesting that Fremantle want overs for Lachie Neale but they’re only willing to probably pay unders for Jesse Hogan?” Morris asked.

Lachie Neale frustrated with Brisbane deal delay (Jon Ralph, Herald Sun, 12/10)

LACHIE Neale has told new football boss Peter Bell he has played his last game at Fremantle and is prepared to go public if it will help smooth a trade to Brisbane.

Fremantle continue to play hard ball in its quest to secure Jesse Hogan for pick 11 and a future second-rounder as well as potentially attempt to get Neale to stay.

The Dockers are asking for pick five and a mid-teens pick from Brisbane they do not have, resisting attempts to broker the trade for only pick five.

If the Neale trade fell through Fremantle could keep pick five to take to the draft as well as securing Hogan, a perfect scenario for Bell and CEO/acting list manager Steve Rosich.

But while Bell said this week it would be a badge of honour to be able to keep relentless ball winner Neale at Fremantle, the Dockers star made it clear in their meeting this week he wasn’t playing there next year.

He is becoming increasingly frustrated with the club’s inability to broker a deal to get him to Brisbane.

Despite talk of a trade falling over, Fremantle still has time to increase its offer to Melbourne by accepting a deal with Brisbane for Neale that involves pick five.

Trade Wrap: Difficult Dockers hold things up (Nick Bowen and Mitch Cleary, AFL.com.au, 12/10)

IF THE Dockers' NAB AFL Trade Period finishes no better than it's started, they will at least claim one prize – the award for the most difficult club to deal with.

Just ask Brisbane, which is waiting to see if Fremantle will back down on its refusal to trade contracted midfield star Lachie Neale.

When Brisbane and Fremantle were talking, the Lions had pick No.5 on the table – a gilt-edged selection the Dockers could have used to help snare Melbourne spearhead Jesse Hogan or invest in a 2018 draft laden with top-end talent – but the Dockers counter-claimed for two first-round picks.

Brisbane wants Fremantle to get real on Lachie Neale negotiations (Andrew Hamilton, The Courier Mail, 12/10)

BRISBANE has urged Fremantle to forget about last year’s trade week heist and get realistic in negotiations for Lachie Neale.

The Lions told Fremantle the No.2 pick the Dockers were able to pry out of Gold Coast for Lachie Weller last year was a once in a lifetime deal and should not be used as a scale for future dealings.

Brisbane say pick five is a fair price for Neale while the Dockers are adamant he is worth pick five and another first round pick which Brisbane do not possess.

Freo pull out of Jesse Hogan deal ( :poo:Greg Denham:poo:, The Australian, 12/10)

Brisbane is offering Fremantle pick No 5 in exchange for Lachie Neale, which Melbourne want for Hogan. If the Hogan standoff continues, the Lions are in the box seat to complete the Neale trade, as a no-deal would leave the Dockers looking foolish for moving back in the draft from six to 11.

Dayne Beams ready to request trade to Collingwood despite saying he wanted to stay in Brisbane (Sam Edmund, Herald Sun, 13/10)

DAYNE Beams’ shock move back to Collingwood is still alive with four days left to strike a deal.

The Brisbane Lions remain in the dark, but figures familiar with the situation expect Beams to be in black and white before Wednesday’s 8.30pm trade deadline.

No official trade talks have yet taken place between the two clubs, with Lions chief executive Greg Swann this week describing the ongoing speculation as “re-heated soup”.

Swann told the Herald Sun: “We can’t say anymore because we don’t know. Nothing has come of it so far so we’ll just wait and see.”

Beams is contracted at the Lions until the end of 2020 and he is yet to formally request a trade, but the deal to get him back to Collingwood is being worked on behind the scenes by the Magpies.

It’s understood Collingwood won’t offer players in exchange and is instead keen to send draft picks to the Gabba.

The Pies have selections 18, 51, 56 and 57 in next month’s national draft.

Any pick sent back to Collingwood in a potential Tom Langdon trade could also be used to snare Beams.

Beams, an All-Australian and dual best-and-fairest winner, would slot into a Magpies midfield that would be the envy of the competition, with Steele Sidebottom, Adam Treloar, Taylor Adams, Scott Pendlebury and Tom Phillips representing an embarrassment of engine room riches.

While the Lions have consistently stated they would not trade their former captain, it’s understood they would grant his release if an appropriate deal was proposed by Collingwood.

Elsewhere, Marcus Adams still appears destined for the Lions despite the Western Bulldogs’ insistence it will hold the defender to the last two years of his deal.

While they’re a long way apart, the Dogs and Lions have been working on a trade, with Adams poised to sign a three-year contract at Brisbane once it’s finally ticked off.
