Scrimmshaw went for less than that, using this years positions as a guide, hawthorn traded 2019 rd 3 pick (53 this year) for gold coasts 2019 4th rd pick (59 this year), pick difference is around 67 for a 2016 pick 7!

Suns will finish last next year, hawthorn may slide a little.
Hawthorn may slide?. Lets look at their position. They started with picks 15, 35 & 53. After trade, they are likely to have some picks in the 80's and 90's left HOWEVER. For their picks 15, 35 & 53 and trading Burton, they are going to end up with Wingard, Scully and Scrimshaw. Wingard was pick 6 and is 25 and a 2 x AA. Scully was a pick 1 and is one of the best 2 way runners in the league and Scrimshaw was a pick 8 and is young. They MAY even still have pick 35 to go to the draft with. How the hell are we supposed to compete with that when we are talking about having to trade out multiple 1st round picks just to move up a draft order. Really with the picks we have - if we were called Hawthorn, I have no doubt we would now have Bontompelli, Grundy and Coniglio lining up for us next season. I just can't believe how Hawthorn can bend everyone over and get away with absolute daylight robbery like they do

I was thinking that we probably told Richmond we will try to get a pick better than 71 as steak knives in our next trade. Seems odd that we pushed through a deal for 68 and the deal got done. Richmond arbitrarily difficult here which is their right.

Wonder if this means we are a long way away from getting our next trade done.

I think the pick trades will be done down the track if they are to be.

Agreed but I just dont see a Charlie Curnow or Cripps at the Suns right now. They are in for a world of pain.
True. I think the Suns have a greater depth of mid-tier players like your Jarryd Lyons types than Carlton, whose bottom end is horrendous. But they lack top end talent massively, especially with Lynch and now probably May out the door.

It's in their best interests to take 2, 3 and likely 5 to the draft. They'd be hoping to extract a lot more than the last time they had four top 10 picks, when they drafted Ainsworth (very good), Scrimshaw (traded for peanuts), Brodie (struggling to get a game) and Bowes (only okay)

That's saying something when you consider Carlton's list over the last 2-3 years
Is it really just the list for both of those teams, or that they are severely lacking as well in good development systems for the players?

GC definitely selected the wrong mature players to mentor the younger players, so that's a list selection problem. GWS made sure to get more of the 'right' type of established AFL players but it still took quite a while for the promise to be delivered for that team.

It's a combination of both. Gold Coast in particular are struggling to retain their talent, like Lynch and May. Carlton have traded in proven spuds.

Both Captains probably gone is very telling for GC. The AFL has had to come in to provide management direction, again. It really is one of the worst moves the AFL did in creating that team.

Gold Coast also really suffered from severe injuries to O'Meara and Swallow. Had those two remained at full fitness, I suspect O'Meara would have stayed and both would be starring in the GC midfield

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

While Ablett is well passed his best, him leaving them esp in the manner in which he did, hurt their public image.

AFL really needs to give the GCS first dibs on any QLD talent so they remain there. I wouldnt be opposed to that. I can imagine the same would be needed for any Tassie team as well that eventually joins the AFL.

At this point I wouldn't be suprised to see us keep the picks we have. Crows don't rate Rankine as high as us and the only way we trade up is if we are certain to pickup Luko, which is unlikely. Not sure what the deal is with adelaide and Rankine...attitude?? But I'm led to believe we have Smith rated higher.
