California has one of the most productive agriculture systems in the world as well as onshore and offshore oil and gas resources. Besides, what nation is 100% self-sustainable these days? The whole point of the modern trade system is specialisation in advantage.
Yet they can't stop people shitting in the streets of San Francisco!

An interesting thought experiment if California were to secede is what would happen to the thousands of homeless people drawn to California from nearby states by the superior safety net, support services and climate for sleeping rough.

If it was an EU style border people could quite easily enter California but most high welfare EU states have laws around non-citizens receiving welfare payments.

They’d probably just go to Oregon instead.

The issue is California is wealthy in spite of its politics, not because of them.

Also I totally forgot, California elected Arnie as Governor for two terms! His platform was basically driving around Hummer saying climate change was a myth while calling the Democrats a bunch of girls.

Um are you being sarcastic? Arnie is a huge advocate for climate change action. He currently plans to sue big oil for causing climate change.

When Arnie ran for Governor of California in 2003, he was the official spokesman for Hummer.
And converted his hummer to an electric vehicle. He was one of the very earliest adopters of electric vehicles when most liberals were still using hybrids. He organised an institute which has one of its main goals as to combat climate change.

When did he convert it to an electric vehicle? Pre or post election?

This Snipes woman was fined $150k by a court after the 2016 election for destroying ballots, but miraculously kept her job running the election? Now a court ordered her to release certain data by 7pm, which Florida law had required her to actually submit by Tuesday night anyway, and she refused. Dafuq. Also reports she fired a staffer who caught her filling out blank pamphlets in her back office lol. Surely they fire this rascal now?

She sounds incompetent. Must have friends in high places.

If there's one thing both sides can agree on, it's that incompetence (and even crime) tends to go unpunished for the political class in the US. Apparently she makes $170k a year US to work for 2 weeks every 2 years. Sign me up!

That would make sense, it's the most southerly major capital, close to the sea which moderates extreme temperatures, and has good support services.
Funny story, French Canadian bloke in Vancouver telling me about the massive oboe problem they have on Hastings. I’m thinking classically trained buskers, just jamming on useless woodwinds.

Then it twigs, hobos.

When he was governer. Your original quote claimed he was anti climate change whilst he was governer.

In any case those who work in the field know that preventing climate change required switching completely from fossil fuels to clean energy sources and not reducing energy use at the margin. Reducing energy use such as buying less tvs, wearing jumpers instead of heating or having smaller cars was going to do sweet bug**r all to stop it. We need complete removal of fossil fuels globally to stop temperatures rising. As a result there is nothing inconsistent with promoting hummers and being pro climate change mitigation. Climate change mitigation is about clean fuel sources no matter what the socialists try to say.

I’m simply referring to Arnie being a proto-Trump. Cool your jets bro, I love Predator and Running Man too.

lol. Imagining a city centre but all the homeless hangouts filled with people playing the oboe

A badly used woodwind can cause true terror.

Energy efficiency and reduced energy use has done most of the heavy lifting on carbon reduction to this point. Not sure what that has to do with socialism.

Yes it has because clean fuels arent competitive yet. Yet energy efficiency has been nothing but a speed bump. Global emissions arent falling yet. They have to fall dramatically (like to a fifth or less of its current size) to stop temperatures rising. Good luck doing that with energy efficiency.

Most industry estimates have energy efficiency at about 30-40% of the pathway to reduction in carbon required to reach the Paris targets. Fair bit more than a speed bump. Carbon intensity per capita has been plummeting in developed countries due to energy efficiency. Seems an odd target.

Toronto is a fair bit more south than Vancouver is.

There are also 3 other state capitals that are more south than Vancouver, but they are all in the East

if they spend two weeks every two years on their electoral processes it's a wonder it works at all

The Californian economy alone would make them the 5th biggest country in the world;

California now has the world's 5th largest economy

California's economy has surpassed that of the United Kingdom to become the world's fifth largest, according to new federal data made public Friday.

California's gross domestic product rose by $127 billion from 2016 to 2017, surpassing $2.7 trillion, the data said. Meanwhile, the UK's economic output slightly shrunk over that time when measured in U.S. dollars, due in part to exchange rate fluctuations.

The data demonstrate the sheer immensity of California's economy, home to nearly 40 million people, a thriving technology sector in Silicon Valley, the world's entertainment capital in Hollywood and the nation's salad bowl in the Central Valley agricultural heartland. It also reflects a substantial turnaround since the Great Recession.

All economic sectors except agriculture contributed to California's higher GDP, said Irena Asmundson, chief economist at the California Department of Finance. Financial services and real estate led the pack at $26 billion in growth, followed by the information sector, which includes many technology companies, at $20 billion. Manufacturing was up $10 billion.

California last had the world's fifth largest economy in 2002 but fell as low as 10th in 2012 following the Great Recession. Since then, the largest U.S. state has added 2 million jobs and grown its GDP by $700 billion.

California's economic output is now surpassed only by the total GDP of the United States, China, Japan and Germany. The state has 12 percent of the U.S. population but contributed 16 percent of the country's job growth between 2012 and 2017. Its share of the national economy also grew from 12.8 percent to 14.2 percent over that five-year period, according to state economists.

California's strong economic performance relative to other industrialized economies is driven by worker productivity, said Lee Ohanian, an economics professor at University of California, Los Angeles and director of UCLA's Ettinger Family Program in Macroeconomic Research. The United Kingdom has 25 million more people than California but now has a smaller GDP, he said.

California's economic juggernaut is concentrated in coastal metropolises around San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego.

"The non-coastal areas of CA have not generated nearly as much economic growth as the coastal areas," Ohanian said in an email.

The state calculates California's economic ranking as if it were a country by comparing state-level GDP from the Bureau of Economic Analysis at the U.S. Department of Commerce with global data from the International Monetary Fund.
