looking too far ahead, but USA currently in fourth on 9pts and play home against Panama on final match day in concacaf. Panama currently 3rd on 10pts so that match will determine 3rd. a clear result in that match could see the loser miss out completely as honduras have a match away to costa rica and a win to them sees them leap frog either Panama or USA or both. honduras need a result as they're too far behind on goal diff, costa rica have already qualified so a bit of saudia arabia vs japan scenario there.

if AUS can get past Syria....and that's no way a given, play-off ties against USA would be huge.

It's expected that ANZ Stadium will be announced to host our home leg against Syria as early as tomorrow. If we get past them, then I expect Emptyhad will host the home leg against Panama/Honduras as the MCG would be in cricket mode.
other way around i reckon......or homebush bay oval could get both, especially if USA are the intercontinental play off opponent.

Major announcement at 10:30am this morning from ANZ Homebush with Gallop and Emerton. Either Emerton is our new coach (seems like something the FFA would do) or they're just announcing that the game will be played there against Syria.

If we were to play the US, where do we reckon the away leg would likely be

I'm in New York at the moment, and would love to see the Socceroos live there.

Good question. They play all over the place. I imagine it will be in one of the bigger venues in NY or LA.

They should play it at Merdedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, that's mint. It's artificial turf though, not sure if FIFA allow that.

Both home games would be at anz I would expect unless the state governments of either Queensland or Victoria chip in.
Which is a ******* outrage if you ask me.

It's probably the strongest indicator that football in Australia is nowhere near as strong as the FFA likes to tell us when they still have to sell our big games, rather than choosing the best stadium for the team that provides the best atmosphere for fans and the best tv viewing for the blow-ins that you hope will become rusted on.

Homebush stadium is easily the worst "major" stadium in Australia. (That said... Melbourne has historically been pretty unkind to the Socceroos.)

I actually love that they just played the Thailand game at AAMI Park, which I thought gave us the biggest possible advantage over the opposition the country could provide. Freezing cold city, open to the elements, the crowd close and right on top of the action, pristine pitch. It was the ideal scenario to knock five goals in...we just choked.

For play-offs they will want a big rectangular stadium and it has to be either Lang Park or Homebush.

I'm not concerned where we play the home game. Socceroo home fixtures used that have amazing atmosphere, now it's like a morgue.

After going to the friendly against Greece and watching the crap that was served up I vowed I would be back for a while, but went to the Japan game soon after. Which strengthened my resolve to stay away - thank god I stayed away for the Thailand game.

This campaign has been really tough to watch. Now up to 4 more games. I get the feeling we'll end up getting through on away goals against Syria 3-3 (2-2 away and 1-1 at home) the way we are playing

Disappointing that $ydney get both games (provided we beat Syria), the FFA may as well rename themselves Football Federation $ydney. Australia's home ground my arse!!!

I have no idea how people can be bandwagon supporters of their own country. It's not like we're Brazil and are expected to win every major tournament.

Obviously the biggest frustration for me is the governance, the fact that this game has gone to Sydney (shouldn't have been Melbourne either) just shows how out of touch the FFA are with the fans and growing the game in general.
