I was there for the tennis that day it wasn’t that bad jeez. Warm sure and a bit sticky but take some water and you are fine.

The tennis they could have closed the roof but not MCG.With the threat of rain and terrible hot conditions there is no way people would be prepared to go that game.Similar tonight which is basically a game to decide who finishes 2nd with expected rain will be wash out for the GF final on the week end.

There's no shield rules for rain delays.

Much harder for a 5 day Shield final to be washed out than a 3 hour T20 game. Just because the weather is going to be just as bad on Sunday it doesn't excuse the lack of a reserve day for the BBL final. All the World Cup knockout finals have provision for a reserve day in case of a washout.

So... what's the ideal length for this comp? We all agree this has dragged on too long. So the question is fewer games, or more double-headers packed into a tighter season?

I'm thinking:
Start the season the day after the Boxing Day test, which is New years Eve. Have round 1 over 31 Dec 31, 1 Jan and 2 Jan. Then the Sydney test on Jan 3-7. Round 2 begins Jan 8, then goes full on with double-headers every Saturday and Sunday. Last H & A games on Jan 26. Final on the first Saturday in Feb, with Sunday as a reserve day. Probably reduce to 8 or 10 games per side so there is an even number of home and away games. Aussie international players to join the BBL after the Sydney test.

Nah, tennis only affects Melbourne. Not everybody is into tennis.Me for example, didn't watch a single game.
They do lose a TV audience over the tennis

I reckon they could overlap by a week. Last H & A game on Australia Day means they clash during the first week of the tennis but only the minor rounds. The second week is the finals. They don't need to clash head-to-head until the Saturday night.

Ideally you lock in Australia Day at the MCG for the final, start the week before Christmas and fit it all into that window. With the final venue locked in they don't have to drag out the finals as they are doing which is done so they know the venue a week out. Then for a week we all know the final is going to be a joke.

Stick with a top 4 with the current format eliminating the stupid 5th place getting in rubbish. The 5th team doesn't deserve to play finals as shown tonight, a mile behind the top 2.

For next year with Australia Day on the Tuesday you'd do 3 v 4 Thursday night, 1 v 2 Friday night, PF on the Sunday night, final on Australia Day. Easy, final round of matches finishes on the previous Sunday so they'd have 4 weeks to fit in the home and away season. But then you'd probably have to cut the number of games as 14 games in 30 days is probably a bit much!!!

To cut back on travel they could always do what they've done in the OD comp and other domestic comps as well as NRL with the super round. Play a few matches in one city over 4-5 days. Could utilise other venues for the out of state games so Thunder v Scorchers at the Junction or Heat v Hurricanes at North Sydney Oval. Mix it up, do something different because the current format sucks, its too long, then they drag out finals. Its fitting this joke of a competition will end with a bigger farce than the World Cup!!!

Starting the week before Christmas might work, but no for the international players who might want to spend that time with their families. (Selfish bastards).

No locking in the MCG. This is footy thinking not cricket. Won't happen. The BBL is not some expanded version of the VBL. If you ended up with two non-Vic teams nobody would turn up. Preserve the Boxing Day test by all means as that has some history behind it, but the MCG has nothing around the BBL.

Don’t they already start the week before Christmas?

Ok a little tongue in cheek, but they could lock it in and rotate each year, that way you know where it is, it’s a public holiday so hopefully people come out, they could make the tournament important and the final a big occasion.

Yes, but we all agree it is too long. So do we shift the start date forward or the finish date back?

I'd like for the Australian international players to play in the BBL after the test series are done. So if we make the last test of the summer the Sydney test from 3-7 Jan, and clear out the rest of the calendar till January 31 it means they can play a fair chunk of it.

Have the tests running from late November till 7 Jan, and have the SS running parallel with most of it so players can find form in the long version of the game. Up until the Boxing Day test of course, but hopefully then it will be known who has good form if a late call-up to the test side is needed. We can play some 50-over ODI series in February on weekends.

This is why I shift the start date for the BBL to after the Boxing Day test.

Yeah i did view the radar. Might be abandoned without a ball being bowled. A lot of rain.
That being said, i hope everyone up in NSW are going ok with both the fires and floods.

What a crowd last night. BBL bosses must be excited for next year!

This has been a terrible summer of cricket. Boring tests, boring BBL. Cricket lost more fans than it gained this summer, there is no doubt about that
Yep - an insipid summer of cricket.

Roll on footy season.

A short walk baby

“It’s close”

Just lol

Close in that it's about a 1 hour flight from Sydney to Melbourne, I wasn't suggesting that the players should walk from Sydney to Melbourne for the game.

It wouldn't have been that hard to reschedule the final to Melbourne like CA did with the Bushfire Bash fundraiser game but instead they are going to plow on with having the final at the SCG despite the fact it will most likely be a washout and a joke of a result, one of the more moronic decisions they've made along with selling the rights for ODIs and T20 internationals to Foxtel.
