When are the fixtures announced?

The Big Bash League will tweak its schedule and contracting rules for next season, boosting franchises’ abilities to lure big name talent.

Clubs will now be allowed to contract up to six overseas players across the season - up from four in previous years. Only two overseas players can be on an 18-man roster at any one time, but an additional four can be contracted as replacements.

But that won’t be the only change next season geared towards boosting the amount of big name BBL recruits. The Australian understands next season will be ten days shorter, making the competition more attractive to overseas talent not looking to spend months away from home.

Acting head of BBL Abhi Arunachalam told the publication that contracting rules have been changed to afford clubs greater flexibility when dealing with “the needs of overseas players”, which may include shorter stints.

“We’re confident that it’ll result in a great mix of overseas players and domestic talent that has contributed to the success the BBL is today,” Arunachalam said.

Cricket Australia executive general manager of fan engagement Anthony Everard said on the weekend that the contracting rule change was a “fantastic result” for the BBL.

“... clubs [have been] given a better chance at securing international players on a short-term basis to fit into an increasingly competitive global cricketing calendar,” he said in a statement.

Much of the off-season has been dominated by talks of the schedule - extended last season to 59 games - and the competition’s ability to lure overseas talent.

The concerns have been highlighted by the retirement of Shane Watson from the BBL, as well as the reluctance of T20 megastar AB de Villiers to sign a contract.

The South African was understood to be keen on a short stint in the BBL next season but withdrew over concerns about how much attention the negotiations were receiving.

de Villiers was being offered for an eight-game stint around $200,000 with the possibility to earn more from broadcasters and sponsors, The Australian reported.

Found this reasonably interesting. Surely the ultimate success of the two team city strategy is genuine characteristics that people are drawn to one and reject the other? If both are brought within the CV banner, surely that permeates through to fans as becoming increasingly contrived?

On Thursday, it emerged that the Cricket Victoria Board has resolved to bring the management of the Melbourne Stars and the Melbourne Renegades completely in-house. This after a decade of the two clubs operating with their own chief executives - Clint Cooper and Stuart Coventry - and their own independent boards.

Eddie McGuire, president of the Collingwood Football Club, is president of the Stars and the former Hawthorn full forward Jason Dunstall is chairman of the Renegades, while the Sport Australia chairman John Wylie is McGuire's deputy on the Stars board. Each BBL club has a CV board director on their boards: Paul Jackson at the Renegades and Claudia Fatone at the Stars.

It is believed that the boards and chief executives of the Stars and Renegades are set to meet with CV, its chairman Paul Barker and chief executive Andrew Ingleton on Friday afternoon to be formally advised of the decision. An agitated Dunstall was seen leaving CV's headquarters at St Kilda's Junction Oval on Thursday.

This could be bad. Renegades and Stars need to feel like separate teams. If Cricket Victoria * this up because they've read the tea leaves about their own relevancy (see SANFL in the decades since the Crows and Power joined the AFL)... People putting their own careers ahead of what's actually best.

i never understood why the boards were a thing. it seemed to just be a contrived way to bring in some big name Melbourne people to add some gloss to the whole thing. the chief executive will just be replaced with a general manager who does much the same job. I'm pretty confident each GM will to address the bolded as part of their performance plan

Looks like they've cut about two weeks out of the competition and kept the same number of games - that will placate a few people.

Good news, interesting to see how many games are on free TV.
CA should send a second rate team to India, seeing all the Australian players in the BBL for more of the tournament would give it a much needed boost.

The finals have been revamped to give teams 1&2 a second chance.
Thunder's TBC games will probably be at Manuka
I don't know why the Sixers don't take a game or 2 to regional grounds.
