They may as well put all the teams in the finals
4th and 5th already have no chance under this new format. This is about making it easier for teams 1 and 2 to make the grand final without having to play a sudden-death semi final. It not about rewarding teams for finishing mid-table.
Quite a few times in the past the team that has finished top of the ladder has or second have lost their semi final and not made it htrough to the big dance. CA want the final to be 1 versus 2 most years.

CA want as many teams as possible to feel like they're a chance at finals to keep crowds and ratings up. I think your point is just a nice by-product for them.
Nup. It is totally the other way around. It is about giving teams 1 and 2 a double chance at making the grand final. Extending the finals to make a top 5 is by-product of setting up the double-chance system.

They could have easily had a double chance with a top 4 (see the IPL finals system).
A: 1v2
B: 3v4
C: Loser of A v Winner of B
D: Winner of A v Winner of C
Under this format team 4 still has a realistic chance. Adding team 5 makes it harder for team 4, thus favouring teams 1 and 2.
It is not about giving team 5 a realistic chance, they don't get one. It also removes the realistic chance that team 4 had under the old format, or would have under a revised top 4 like you you just mentioned. The new format heavily favours teams 1 and 2, makes it hard to team 3, and just about impossible for teams 4 and 5. Under the old system team 4 had exactly the same chance as team 1

Something else to consider, the amount of BBL clubs a player is allowed to have played with. Cap it at 3 maybe? Would mean clubs are more loyal to players or we see more young players coming through the (BBL) system.

5th making finals just seems ridiculous. It's like that trollop they did with the ODD comp a few years back.

If a player/club limit was in place, feel like some loyalty will be shown. Especially to former Australian players. It’s be the bottom end guys who would be chopped and changed a lot more.
Feels like right now, it is the same players year in, year out at the same clubs vying for the rights.
I dunno, this season is very boring thus far. Hopefully with finals matches brings closer contests

That's not loyalty. That's making things worse for players by only allowing them to move twice.

I feel like it's the presentation. This may come down to the fixturing but I feel like the hosting, and the commentary just lack the excitement of earlier series.
Sometimes it's a ******* chore to watch a match, and worse for non-Foxtel folks in WA where you have to flip channel without warning so 7 can play the news and the majority of the cricket on their main channel.
We are looking at a second rate competition.
All of the smoke being blown up ABDV’s arse (justified, as he is/was a gun) says a fair bit about where the comp is.
Depth is poor in all teams, save for perhaps the Stars.
The IPL shits on it in every category, it’s not even close.
The novelty has worn off for the public, they have realised that the quality of play is not very high. Will be interesting to see how CA spin it at the end of the season.

Always was, there's not the same money in it compared to competing leagues. But I feel the past few series have been sub-optimal, probably due to CA trying to appease the folks paying them the money for broadcast rights.
We seem to hold the BBL in competition with the Bangladesh Premier League. They seem to be a bigger drawcard for internationals than us, for example Chris Gayle is playing over there right now.
Sad to say it, but if we want to grow the BBL we have to increase the number of internationals. Which means growing the salary cap and the money involved. Also means changing the summer schedule completely so the Australian test stars get to play a decent chunk of it.
