Latrell Mitchell rejects South Sydney’s first offer, hopes to seal deal within days

Despite being highly impressed by South Sydney co-owner Russell Crowe’s pitch at a private dinner, Latrell Mitchell has knocked back South Sydney’s first official offer.
He got the Hollywood treatment but not cash.
Latrell Mitchell rejected the Rabbitohs offer after an evening with Russell Crowe was not enough to convince the star centre to accept a cut-price deal to join South Sydney.

NRL hits bookies with Origin, grand final super tax

The NRL and Australian bookmaking giants are at loggerheads over plans for a premium tax on State of Origin and grand finals which could net the code an extra $1 million a year.
The country's major wagering operators have just weeks to sign agreements offered by the NRL, which is determined to cash in on the popularity of its most watched matches – and biggest betting products – with inflated levies.

They will be charged separately to those applied on regular home-and-away matches. Less than a year after the NRL and most of the country’s biggest oddsmakers waged a months-long feud over what fees the game should earn from gambling, the issue is again in the spotlight before the 2020 season.

The model is widely used by horse racing regulators, which apply higher taxes on bookmakers to bet on premium race meetings during major carnivals.
Multiple wagering sources who contacted The Sydney Morning Herald say the NRL’s suite of changes will add a minimum 20 per cent to their previous rugby league product fees and make offering markets on the code nearly unsustainable.
The increase is likely to be passed onto punters, who will be forced to bet into markets with bigger takeout rates.

The move is also an indication the NRL is willing to place a higher value on - and segregate - its Origin showpiece compared to regular season matches.
The code is preparing to begin talks over the next broadcast rights deal - possibly before the end of the year - and media analysts have suggested Origin could be sold separately to fuel further interest from major television players.
The looming betting changes come against a backdrop of significant stress for Australia’s wagering market, which has seen digital bookmakers suffer plummeting profits under the state-based point of consumption tax.
On top of changing different levies for Origin and the grand final, the NRL is pushing for wagering companies to pay taxes at the higher of a revenue-based template or turnover fee which will be calculated on betting results per round.
Previously the NRL has calculated its fees on a monthly basis, but will take a slice of bookmaker profits each week if greater than a designated percentage of turnover on any round.

Bookmaking industry sources insist the NRL’s product fees are already the highest of any Australian sport and the game's wagering revenue will conservatively increase by at least a seven-figure sum per year under the new template.

An executive at one leading operator, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said rugby league ranked below AFL, basketball, soccer and tennis in market share. "It's hard enough to get punters to bet on rugby league over faster-growing domestic and international sports and this model would speed up the market share losses the NRL is already experiencing," the executive said. "The NRL appears to have photocopied the complicated revenue model employed by Racing Victoria which has been driving down their turnover."

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys assumed the chairmanship of the Australian Rugby League Commission from Peter Beattie late last year and has vast experience in the wagering field. He famously battled bookmakers in the High Court before winning a landmark race fields fee case which gave long-term certainty to the thoroughbred industry’s betting income. He is also lobbying the NSW government for PoC tax returns for the NRL to upgrade Sydney's suburban grounds. The NRL and some wagering companies licensed to bet on rugby league matches were forced to roll over a temporary accord for almost the first four months of last season after feuding over betting levies. The stalemate was broken only days before the opening Origin clash in Brisbane.
The AFL recently signed five-year agreements with bookmakers to give clarity over betting taxes.

The NRL will also need to negotiate a new deal for an official wagering partner this year with its $60 million agreement with Sportsbet expiring in 2020.
The NRL was contacted for comment.

They'll never separate the Origin and club broadcast rights. They don't want people knowing exactly how far the club competition is behind the AFL.
