Sorry if there is already one going, but I couldn't find any.. I've gone through our current list and put my preferences for 2019/2020;

This is the core of our list moving forward, All are contracted 2020+

(Name // Age(at end of season) // Contract Expiry)

Eddie Betts / 32 / 2020
Bryce Gibbs / 30 / 2021
Rory Sloane / 30 / 2023
Taylor Walker / 29 / 2021
Tom Lynch / 29 / 2021
Daniel Talia / 28 / 2021
Luke Brown / 27 / 2020
Brodie Smith / 27 / 2021
Paul Seedsman / 27 / 2021
Brad Crouch / 25 / 2020
Rory Atkins / 25 / 2020
Rory Laird / 25 / 2021
Matt Crouch / 24 / 2021
Shane McAdam / 24 / 2020
Wayne Milera / 22 / 2020
Tom Doedee / 22 / 2021
Elliot Himmelberg / 21 / 2020
Jordan Gallucci / 21 / 2020
Myles Poholke / 21 / 2020
Andrew McPherson / 20 / 2021
Darcy Fogarty / 20 / 2021
Chayce Jones / 19 / 2020
Lachlan Sholl / 19 / 2020
Ned McHenry / 19 / 2020
Will Hamill / 18 / 2020

This is players with expiring contract in 2019, I'd look to RE-SIGN:

(Name // Age(at end of season))

Sam Jacobs / 31
Alex Keath / 27
Hugh Greenwood / 27
Cam Ellis-Yolmen / 27
Kieran Strachan / 24
Reilly O'Brien / 24
Ben Davis / 22
Tyson Stengle / 21
Lachlan Murphy / 20
Jordan Butts / 19

This is the list of players I'd look to TRADE if any interest:

(Name // Age(at end of season) // Contract Expiry)

Josh Jenkins / 30 / 2021
Jake Kelly / 24 / 2019
Kyle Hartigan / 28 / 2020
Riley Knight / 24 / 2019

This is the list of players I'd look to DELIST at end 2019:

(Name // Age(at end of season))

Richard Douglas / 32
David Mackay / 31
Andy Otten / 30
Paul Hunter / 26
Patrick Wilson / 24

For me:

Retire (forcibly or otherwise): Jacobs, Otten, Douglas, Mackay
Delist: Davis (well, demote to rookie list), Hunter, Wilson.

5/1 changes seems right for this year, though of course if you could do this:

Trade: Jenkins (I'd be trying my hardest to break that contract right now).

You do that without any hesitation whatsoever.

Agree with everything you've said, Jacobs is a conundrum for me. I love the bloke, but it seems he is fading fast and the old battle axe's body could be starting to slow him down. If O'Brien comes on in the next couple months then maybe we cut Jacobs loose too, but I'd be happy if we threw him a 1 year deal. Especially is we trade Jenkins. (and delist Hunter)

There is no possible way I'd even consider throwing Jacobs a one year deal. He is finished, and to the point it's actively harming us every time we are playing him.

If ROB is disappointing, I'd be getting in a DFA ruck/back up option in to be our main ruck for a season (or just using ROB as a stop gap) before giving that year to Jacobs.

I hear ya.

Fogarty / Jones / McHenry and Gallucci all being first rounders should be fairly safe bets. Seen enough from them already to see there is a lot of talent there. Patience / ongoing progression should see them all become very, very good players for us for the next decade.

I like the look/sound of Murphy, Himmelberg, McPherson, Sholl, Hamill, Davis and McAdam.

Poholke, ROB, Strachan, Butts and Stengle are a mystery to me - could go either way.

Wilson hasn't done too much wrong and if his short - medium kicking continues to improve I like him for a big bodied mid who if nothing else is a good depth option. I'd really, really like to see him given a crack at a running half back role with his straight ahead style and ultra penetrating kick.

IMO we do need to retain some mature big bodied players to support our young ones coming through the SANFL until such times as the AFL structure up a proper reserves competition.

Have you watched any SANFL this year? Poholke is absolutely killing (good enough depth player for afl), Stengle has been amazing and should be in the afl side now (long term Betts replacement) and Butts has been awesome. He’s just seamlessly stepped into SANFL and is very consistent just like Sholl.

I think Sloane, Tex and Talia are the senior players who really matter.

If Tex and Talia can recapture their 2016 form over the next couple of years then we are a flag chance.

If not, we could be about to fall off a cliff.

List management should be based upon where we are at.

If we have fallen off the cliff
- cut any senior player who will block the path of a young player (eg Jenkins, Hartigan)
- cut most depth options (eg Wilson)
- retain senior players who are model professionals for our young players (Douglas, Gibbs?)
- retain senior players who can provide a low-ego shield to young players without stifling their growth (Talia, Brown?)
- fill list spaces with as many speculative chances as possible

If Tex and Talia get back in business then we should keep doing what we have been doing. Retain handy backups.

JJ needs to go either way. Nobody will want his albatross of a contract. We have to pay him anyway but we should settle to get him off the list early.

I said it at the time and I still believe Lynch was one that we should of let go when we had the chance. We had probably seen the best of him and he had some value at the end of last year.

We kept him more to appease members given McGovern was going as opposed to a football decision in my opinion.

I think Eddie and Jacobs will retire at years end. Otten will retire, it was a poor decision to keep him.

I think we went one year too long with Sloane and Seedsman but we couldn't lose them so I can see why we did it.

Obviously we need to keep Keith but I think the rest are okay.

Poholke will become a genuine midfield weapon. I still remember him laying out lance franklin in one of his first games. He has a bag of tricks and is deceptively quick and strong. He will come into his own later (around 23/24) like some of the best midfielders in the comp. Butts is a massive improvement on hartigan. Will take his spot by mid next year. Stengle is a freak and is our immediate eddy replacement either this year or next. ROB is already offering as much or more than what sauce can. And has twice the defensive pressure. Himmelberg looked gassed by the third quarter but still then was much more competitive than jenkins, created a contest and ground ball gets. He HAS to replace him by the beginning of next season. Plus Mcadam and scholl as almost certain inclusions over this season or next. This on top of gooch, jones, mchenry and now wilson looking likely to step in/up to the senior team.
I must say the competion for spots at the AFC is really heating up.

Respect your opinion Bicks ... what’s Wilson’s speed like? How’s this draft shaping ? Does it run deep?

Wilson looks to have good straight line speed, not the most agile though.

IMO this year's draft doesn't run as deep as last year but there's certainly plenty of talent at the top end but looks to peter out a bit into the 2nd round but it's early days yet, probably get more idea after the Championships when the best talent from around the country gets pitted against each other. Unfortunately a lot of the better talent looks to be Vic Metro/Private schoolboys which can be a problem in itself retention wise for interstate clubs.

Trade - Kelly, Knight, CEY, Himmelberg (if he wants to leave for GWS)

I would make Mackay non-AFL Captain of the SANFL

Kelly and Knight I feel are not going to improve , they are what they are. My thinking is to move them on for some value and let natural development push through from our draftees

CEY is a difficult one. If he continues to get a run of games and continues to perform then another 1 year contract is fine.

Now for the really difficult one. On a personal level JJ isnt in my team and I would look to move him on. Yet the figures show his last 6 years have been as equal to Tex. Look up both their stats on footywire.

For many reasons Taylor Walker isnt getting traded. He may feel his body cant push through and retire anyway.

But this isnt about Tex , its about JJ. Its also about Himmelberg in my book. Small sample size but I would love to keep him. I would play HH ahead of JJ and try and get a good deal/trade for JJ

I think you have it right except for Mackay. The club will persist for one more year.

JJ needs to be traded but the question is what we do if nobody wants him. Do you delist and pay him out? Unlikely given he still has two years left, right?. I still think you will see JJ running around in a crows jumper for this year and 2020 and a delist/retirement at end of 2020. The club doesn’t have the balls like Hawthorn to ruthlessly cull and rebuild quickly.

Our timing is abit out with the Carlton/pick 1 deal. We were too late to use it to draft Luko, Rankine or Rozee and too early to use it to trade for Luko or Rankine.

Most likely, but really, getting an asset like that is at the price we did is still worth the investment.
