Tim Paine's batting average is similar to Brad Haddin's, better than Rodney Marsh and he has the highest number of dismissals per match of any Australian keeper. Why sack him?

So we just never sack him until he plays another 20 games for his average to drop low enough?

The guy is 35, his career average doesn't reflect his current level of batting.

Paine captained his best last night for the whole series. Kept his foot on their throat with the quicks. Rotated them well. Wasnt afraid to try Lyon early on a bouncy wicket early offering a bit of turn. Got a wicket the next over and kept Lyon off.

Had a tactic to get Buttler out with a fielder in close at cover and it worked. Appeared to have tactics last night to a lot of their batsmen.

Whats laughable is people saying a replacement will improve our top 7 'immeasurably'. With who? Who has proven themselves so far as a whole package - keeping and batting - that will improve a side on the verge of being 2-0 up 'immeasurably'.

Whats laughable is people think they would call someone up from outside the squad when we are potentially 2-0 up.

As mentioned several times throughout this thread - no one is denying Paine's time is rapidly approaching but you've got to be kidding yourself if you think that time is the 4th test and that they're going to jet over an unproven replacement from Australia and tell Paine thanks for your service and well done last night.

You would think reading through the posts here this morning that we werent about to retain the Ashes. Discussion dominated by selection. We just bowled them out for 67 and the captan is being touted as a possible replacement? Laughable. This forum is just mind blowing sometimes.

That’s what happens when you give adolescents with the brain capacity of a 12 year old a voice or platform to dribble on.

Rod Marshes average dropped off towards the end of his career..but at his swashbuckling best he was better than Paine. Haddin at his best was also better than Paine. Paine unfortunately lost potentially the best years of his batting. He is past his peak in this regard. Good Keeper tho and doing a good job as captain although I am not a fan of Keepers as Captain. Prefer Keepers in the role of Senior Adviser to the Captain.
Five consecutive years of the West Indians trying bounce balls off his skull took a toll on Marsh's average.

Captain can't bat, yet hogs an important position in the batting line up. It's weird that you guys don't think a no. 7 should be able to make a score occasionally.

So yeah, I would have dropped him before the ashes, but of course he's not going anywhere now.

Serious question, how many No.7’s in World Cricket are consistently making big scores or belting consistent half centuries?!?

If you are relying on your 7 to make big runs you have big problems in your top 6.

We have stumbled upon our middle order moving forward in Labuschagne, Smith, Head and Wade for the time being. Our main weaknesses is in the top 3, which is actually a big problem across most test nations not just Australian since the rise of T20 cricket has pretty much killed the mental application, technique and patience of top order batsmen all over the world.

At least in Warner when he is in half decent touch solves half of our opening problems.

Yeh that and he just got old...he only averaged 20 in his final 22 Tests. He retired at 37. Best years as a batter are usually between the age of 26-34 after that they start to fade. Believe it or not baseballers who did not take steroids are similar...unless their Ichiro

Ichiro also had a pretty decent decline too after the age of 35. He just kept playing and playing and playing...

Bit rough to pin us ending up at 6 down instead of 4 down entirely on Paine. Coming in late in the day against reverse swing is a nightmare.

I'd be looking more at the specialist batsmen who threw away starts.

It didn't matter what the conditions were, Paine was always going to get out quickly.

The Australian team of the 90’s and early 2000’s had the uncanny habit of destroying the careers of West Indies captains.

Here’s hoping that this Australia team can do the same to Root.

Must admit I thought we'd get pumped when Smith was ruled out... so far so good!

Paine is fine as captain for now, was put in an unenviable position and has handled it well IMO. Smith will replace him as soon as he's eligible to captain again.

How good has Marnus been :thumbsu: (and how convenient he has an unusual first name as well as an unusual last name to save me typing and inevitably misspelling Laber... Labar.. Labor... oh you know what I mean :p )

If we win this test and consequently retain the Ashes are you suggesting that this would be the opportune moment to sack Tim Paine?

Sack is such an ugly term. I would talk to him about retirement and ask him to go out on his own terms. Say there are other players that will pass him soon and now is the perfect time to retire a hero.

It's always awkward when a captain has to go but his time is up. At absolute max he finishes this series then we retire him.

He doesn’t even have to do it consistently. Just an occasional, rare 100 or match-winning innings would do. Most no. 7s in the world seem to be able to do that sometimes, but not ours. Even Healy could make a decent score from time to time.

But whatever, I’ve beaten up on him enough for today. He probably doesn’t deserve this level of criticism. It’s not his fault he’s not a gun batsman. I just think the selectors should be seriously looking for alternatives. I’d like them to give Carey (or even some other wildcard) a try this summer. We might actually start getting some runs out of 7 again, which is exciting. It’s an important batting position.

I don't see why not, he can still contribute to planning and surely Wade and the bowling attack can handle on field planning. Wade to keeper, Smith in for Paine.
Yuck. Lyon would be shuddering at the thought of having Wade keep to him again.

And Smith to captain? Even before he didn't have the balls to keep Warner in line he was a below average tactician.

I never said Smith to captain, I don't want Smith ever Captain Australia again. I don't care what Lyon feels, Paine is a walking wicket and I don't trust Wades batting either, 4 wickets down and our batting line up collapses.

Been listening to a fair bit of it on the ABC radio which is effectively the BBC. Commentators (bar a few token Aussies) sound so deflated, it's great :D Boycott is moaning even more than usual! Nothing funnier than depressed Poms :tearsofjoy:
I get the feeling Boycott plays to character a bit.
