Richmond, Collingwood, Geelong and GWS are still in it, so their picks aren't yet locked in. Richmond also have Geelong's fourth round pick which isn't locked in either obviously.

There are also a couple of other clubs with picks attached to the finishing positions of this year's top 4:

Hawthorn have a fifth round pick tied to Collingwood's ladder position

Carlton have a fourth round pick tied to GWS' ladder position

Essendon have a second round pick tied to GWS' ladder position

Lore even though Richmond and Collingwood won the Qualifying Final, technically speaking Geelong are still first. If all finals ended this weekend for whatever reason they finished highest of the remaining four teams.

I’ll look at it later but I think while things are still moving around mine seeds them based on losing the qualifying final.

Preliminary Finals, 2019
Question: Does Collingwood beating Geelong in the Qualifying final then seed them ahead of Geelong coming into the prelim? Thinking Geelong might have #15 and Brisbane has the Pies pick at #16.

Edit: Just read the posts above. I am sure this is the way it was years back. Didn't know they had changed it if they did.

Pies and Tigers were the teams for the prelims which should have seeded them 1 and 2.

That was my assumption but just found the 2005 finals series - Adelaide finished first and St Kilda fourth, St Kilda beat Adelaide and then both went out in the prelims. Same situation as this year. Adelaide got the lower pick, pick 16 and St Kilda got pick 17 (which they then traded to Adelaide for Fergus Watts).

Edit: if you're curious about the official rules on the AFL ladder, this is what their document says:

Final Premiership Ladder: the ranking of Clubs as determined by the Commission at the conclusion of the Final Series taking into account any sanctions imposed by the Commission under Rule 29.

So the commission decides! It could be completely arbitrary! (but won't be obviously). ;)

But the rest of it:

2.9 Ranking of Clubs Eliminated During Finals Series

Where two Clubs are eliminated in the same round of the Finals Series, subject to any sanctions imposed by the Commission under AFL Rule 17, to determine the position of those Clubs on the Final Premiership Ladder the Club that was ranked higher on the Premiership Ladder at the conclusion of the Home and Away Series, shall be placed higher as between them.

No idea what happened in 2005 though.

Ah, I see - they're got their stuff defined in two separate documents now. I opened that one looking for draft info, not ladder info, and didn't find anything.

I remember figuring it all out when I made the finals add-on for the spreadsheet, although I haven't had a chance to double check whether what I did in the spreadsheet follows whatever the rules are that I figured out. I do remember looking at the rules and the precedents in previous finals series (e.g. 2005) and reverse engineering the system from that, but not sure what I actually figured out in the end :tearsofjoy:

Currently what the spreadsheet does is looks at who has been eliminated and then slots them into the two relevant spots according to their position on the ladder in round 23. So whoever loses the EFs become 7th and 8th (whether they are 7th or 8th depends on who was seeded higher after R23), whoever loses semis is 5th and 6th (ditto), whoever loses prelims is 3rd and 4th (ditto), loser of the GF is 2nd and the premier is 1st.

During the finals series itself the qualifying final basically acts like a spanner in the works, because the spreadsheet essentially treats the loser of the QF as though they're semi-eliminated I suppose. I'm not sure if that's "really" how it works, but since there's no precedent for cancelling the prelims and grand final we don't really know for sure.

Checking that one and building a work around for it isn't super high on my list of priorities atm though as I have a few other projects that I'm working on that have more pressing deadlines, including something for the forum that needs to be done before the free agency period starts on Friday week.

So ya. I might look into it once everything's done and rebuild the 2020 spreadsheet if it's wrong, when I have the time. Feel free to figure out how it is supposed to work though, saves me doing the research and figuring it out when I do get time for it

Grand Final, 2019
I've also created a thread for tracking 2020 Future Picks, which will become the 2020 version of this thread once the 2019 draft is over.

For now the picks are based on the 2019 ladder and nothing has been traded, so it's all very boring. But once future picks start being traded you can track them over there. :)

Gold Coast receive special assistance package from the AFL
and 1st pick of 2nd round #20.
Yeah haha I screwed that up twice now. Mucked up the colours too the first time I posted it :tearsofjoy:

I think this is right:

Pick 1 and Pick 20 to the Gold Coast as part of special assistance package from the AFL

I will also ask that anyone interested, particularly Richmond fans please check your picks. A couple of things just broke, messing up the round colours particularly. I think they're correct now but yeah. If you notice anything odd please let me know. :)
