He is paid to write an opinion. Don't see a problem with what he has written, save that the Herald Sun does not treat Wingard as a midfielder, which could go some way to addressing the point Goddard raised.

In terms of topline ball winning midfielders, Hawthorn has Worpel, Mitchell and O'Meara. Shiels is capable on his day, but I wouldn't place him in the top echelon.

He is paid to give his opinion so he needs to do research not just phone it in. On the channel 7 trade show he was embarrassing.

Goddard’s opinion isn’t well informed hence the concern of posters on this board. Personally, I wouldn’t waste my the time to Read any article written by Goddard.

I know Fremantle have made a commitment to redrafting Hugh Dixon, but what is stopping the club from picking him up with one of the late draft picks? He is a delisted free agent and eligible for selection.

Western Bulldogs were 7th on the list, despite having what I'd consider one of the most formidable and young midfield groups in the competition.

He also had Essendon 9th, ahead of Hawthorn at 10th. With barely a ruckman.

Gippsland coach on SEN mentioned leon connoly whos an outside mid who he reckons could develop an inside game.

Kicks both sides may be a smokey. In looking that up i noticed Harrison Pepper mentioned from the hawks academy

Further to Mr Pretzel Packets observations, we do need another elite player who can play inside.
But this player also needs to play outside too, similar to what we expect O'Meara to do when Mitchell returns (hopefully to his best form).

When we had an abundance of inside specialists during the three-peat era, we augmented our midfield with pure outside run, but the ideal would have been for a couple of those inside players to be able to do both. We simply had too many inside specialists, which is why Lewis was played as a link-up player for most of his career. Lewis did well in that role, but you don't recruit insiders hoping they can adapt. If you have the choice, you take someone who can already do that.

That's why I am so keen on Stephens - inside/outside player with pace and an excellent kick.
He is precisely what we need to give the midfield the perfect balance.

I'm starting to think that the Dees will grab Stephens at 3 as he is exactly what they need. :(

I think they will take Young or bid on Green.

I would want to pick Stephens or Young if we had pick 3.
My thinking with Melbourne and GWS with such great lists (on paper) that they won't necessarily be picking best available and will more than likely pick need based. Melbourne theoretically don't need good kicks out of the backline as they have quite a talented backline and Salem is a pretty good quarterback out of there AND as they really shat the bed this year they will be looking for a ready made who will make them immediately better and for me that is an inside outside line breaker which is Stephens. Just my thinking of course but that's my feel.

They need Serong.

You certain the Dees are taking him? I'd be staggered while they've got Gawn and Preuss on their list.
My take would be the interest in Jackson from Melbourne is to try and bluff GWS into giving up overs to move up to 3 and guarantee themselves Jackson. I couldn’t fathom Melbourne picking up a young ruckman with such a high pick.
