THE FINAL order has been set ahead of the NAB AFLW Draft on October 22.

A series of selection periods have taken place since the initial draft order was released before the AFLW sign and trade period.

They include an expansion team signing block, a pre-draft bidding process for academy players from expansion club academies, and the father-daughter nomination period.

Teams were also able to inform the AFL of any players who would be sitting out the upcoming 2020 season on the inactive list, whether that be through injury, work commitments or personal reasons.

The Western Bulldogs will be active early, with picks No. 1, 6, 8 and 9 in the first round alone, in part due to expansion signings (Monique Conti and Katie Brennan to Richmond) and trades (Libby Birch to Melbourne).

New Tiger Katie Brennan in action against the Bulldogs during the VFLW season
Up to 102 draft selections will be made on Tuesday.

There will be four new teams joining the AFLW in 2020. St Kilda's first ever selection will come with pick No.5, Richmond at pick 7, Gold Coast at pick 18 (pick three in the Queensland state-based draft) and West Coast at pick 19 (pick No.2 for the Western Australian pool).

Due to the part-time nature of the competition, the AFLW Draft is divided into nomination pools, so players do not have to move across the country if they choose not to.

Further to the state pools, Victoria is split further into three zones (the entire state, Melbourne metro, and Geelong), while Queensland has two options: the zone of residence (the state being split between Brisbane and Gold Coast) or nominating for both sides.

At the conclusion of the draft, club lists will sit at 30, with teams having had the option to sign up to three rookie players (who must not have been on an Australian football list for three years). There is no requirement to sign any rookies at all, if teams choose not to.

I know Bulldogs have been raided but 4 picks in the top 9 is massive.
They did lose a couple of handy players to Punt Rd and another to Melbourne? but yeah they would be pretty happy with those picks in return, we have 4 picks in the top 2 rounds so it looks like we'll be getting a good injection of talented youth and some experience with later picks which should round off our list nicely.

How does the AFLW Draft work?

"Players have the option of nominating for a certain region, they can nominate for metropolitan Melbourne, or the whole of Victoria or Geelong. Players that have nominated for Victoria or metro Melbourne, we have the option of picking those players."

Richmond enters the draft with 13 selections but two of those picks have already been taken as pre-draft selections, can you explain that process?

"Through that process, we nominated four of our academy (Richmond VFLW) players, Kate Dempsey, Laura Bailey, Alana Woodward and Grace Egan. Alana did not receive any bids from other clubs so she automatically goes onto our list, while the other three players all had bids placed on them. We matched Laura and Kate’s bids. Unfortunately Carlton used a draft pick (on Egan) that was too high for us to match, so Grace will go to Carlton in their first-round selection."

What will the Tigers be looking for in their selections?

"We’ve got pick No. 7 in the National draft (No. 5 in the Victorian draft). With that pick, we are trying to take the best available talent. It’s a pretty hot top 10 and we’re really unsure of what the other clubs are going to do. That’s the exciting and nervous part of draft day, you’re just never sure of what’s going to eventuate…And then we’re looking for youth, we’re looking to develop and grow this list so that the future years at the Richmond Football Club have got a lot of exciting young talent."

The Draft Combine was earlier this month, what did you see in that talent pool that you liked?

"There were girls that jumped up and tested really well and there were other girls that gave you a good insight into their capacity to push themselves, how they move and how they’ve progressed from previous years when we’ve seen them at the National Championships. It was really great to meet them and have conversations with them and just get to know them a little bit more intimately as well. They’re a terrific young bunch of girls who just want an opportunity at AFLW level. It was really nice for them to get to also know us as a group, we had our head coach Tom Hunter there, our recruiter Lauren Tesoriero and our head of high performance Matt Parker."

Richmond’s first round selection of pick No. 7 will be the Club’s first ever AFLW draft pick, how exciting is this moment for the Richmond Football Club?

"(It will be) a massive moment for the Club. A lot of people behind the scenes have been building for two years for this process to occur. And we’re really excited about the draft because we’re going to be able to put the final pieces of the puzzle together and take 11 players on the day, which will formalise our list to 30 players. There's a lot of unknowns on draft day (but) we have good conversations with Blair Hartley and Matt Clarke in our (Richmond) AFL program about what to expect...We just can't wait to meet the future 11 players that will make up our 30. We're getting to the pointy end where we can start to do the work and start to build the connections and get the players involved in this terrific club."

Yeah the dogs have got some really good top 10 picks this year
I strongly believe that one of those top 10 picks will be used on father/daughter Isabella Grant, that pick will be announced on the draft
She is already locked in to the dogs, will be interesting what pick it is as she is a fair player(our own Grace Egan is pick 13 Carlton as a indicator)
The top 5 picks are top shelf and it wont mater who we get
Really looking forward to the draft as we have some fantastic picks

Look for these names to be prominent-
Georgia Patrikios (Calder Cannons), Lucy McEvoy (Geelong Falcons), Gabrielle Newton (Northern Knights), Sophie Molan (GWV Rebels),
Britney Gutknecht (Northern Knights), Elisabeth Georgostathis (Western Jets), Laura McClelland (Eastern Ranges),
Nell Morris-Dalton (Northern Knights).
The picks we have that I'm interested in are-
Round 1 7 (VIC No 5)
Round 2 25 (VIC No 12)
Round 2 31 (VIC No 16)
Round 2 40 (VIC No 21)
Round 3 43 (VIC No 23)
Bearing in mind that the dogs will cough up a top 10 pick for Isabella Grant and the cats a top pick for Millie Brown, both pick selections will be revealed on draft day
Also Blues have committed Round 1 pick 13 (VIC No 10) for our Grace Egan
So our subsequent picks will rise up in order

I'll have a stab at what I think might happen at the draft
1. Isabella Grant is locked in to the dogs as father/daughter so assuming the pick that they'll have to use is either pick 6, 8 or 9
2. Millie Brown is locked in to the cats as father/daughter so assuming the pick that they'll have to use is pick 11
3. Mia King will go to kangaroos at pick 10
4. Grace Egan is locked in to blues at pick 13
Which means our pick 25 looks very juicy indeed

I agree , was a bit raw early on but has quickly learnt off some quality administrators she’s doing a very good job indeed , when you compare our signings to the other new sides , there is no comparison

Seems like expecting McEvoy to be still available at our pick is a stretch so who do we want?
If Lucy McEvoy, Georgia Patrikios or Gabrielle Newton are available at our first pick, I would be gobsmacked and over the moon
I'm tipping it will be Sophie Molan, Britney Gutknecht, Laura McClelland or Elisabeth Georgostathis around our first, to consider
Either of those 7 girls are elite talent, so can't go wrong
Left field choice would be Olivia Divilly from Ireland who starred in the testing at the combine, finishing in the top two of three tests.
She recorded the best result in the Yo-Yo test (level 17.2) and came second in both the 20-metre sprint (3.258 seconds) and the two-kilometre time trial (7:48).
She is one to consider at our first or second pick definately

Newton and McEvoy are first off the board, then Patrikios. Don't reckon Molan will be available either. From a needs perspective we'd benefit from another elite mid and I think a key defender to complement Miller and Akec will go well. Mind you, the first two or three picks should just be best available. We can shuffle players to accomodate the elite 18 year olds coming in.

Agree that out of all the clubs joining in 2020 our strategy looks to be go after and sign up stars and then build a team around them,
I think the Suns will be interesting to watch how they develop up here in QLD. in U18’s they had three GC girls named as all Australian from the championships, they signed Virgo, Stanton, Kasler and Ernst as experienced players, and raided the lions to get local girls back home and have now partnered with NT for the next 4 years to play games in Darwin and have access to this NT talent, they also have Academy Zone including Cairns. It’s interesting to see the different approaches being taken to list building by the new clubs.
For this draft I would like us to target the earlier picks with girls who are ready made to come in and play and be able to step up to AFLW level and then look to draft players with potential, athletic types with raw talent who may not quite understand the game yet and develop these players. We are second to none at developing players in the AFL and should be able to do same in the woman’s space, that’s if we aren’t already doing this.

What do you think of Lagioia? do you think she will go early? from the champs I liked Renee Salulitis, too young for this draft, but just has great goal sense and definitely one to watch to see how she develops.

Gemma Lagioia won the Oakleigh Chargers B&F, played for Vic Metro, played in the winning Collingwood 2019 VFLW premiership (in the best) and got invited to the combine, she can play all around the ground, a utility type player
Gemma recorded a top 5 in the yo-yo test 16.1, top 5 in the 2km time trial 8m 1s, Named in the best in wins over QLD, Vic Country and Eastern Allies
I think Gemma will go in the top 20-25 Vic picks for sure
Renee Saulitis a small forward played for Vic Country, did some nice things through out the champs, 2 goals in the loss to Vic Metro, named in the best
Kicked a nice goal in Vic Country's win against QLD, one to watch in next years draft for sure

Yeah agree those 3 should be gone, in what order it doesn't matter as they are elite
My hunch is that we'll look at Britney Gutknecht and Elisabeth Georgostathis at our pick 7(Vic pick 5)

Good summary regarding our list strategy
We recruited Brennan, Conti and Fredricks to build around, like our AFL team Dusty, Cotch and Rance

The bulldogs pick6 is a interesting one
Who do they pick Sophie Molan, or Elisabeth Georgostathis, as both played well for their VFLW side
Both girls have high credentials and will be locked and loaded to play AFLW straight away
Elisabeth Georgostathis cut us up both times she played kicking 3 goals in the last H&A and 2 goals in the final and named in the best both times
Sophie Molan had a better U18 year by a smidge, being named in the AA U18 championship team
Both were named in the TAC U18 team of the year, with Elisabeth coming second in the TAC U18 B&F
Elisabeth was 1st in the combine agility test 8.535 seconds, while Sophie came 3rd in the yo-yo 16.4
Best outcome for us I believe would be Elisabeth Georgostathis as our first pick and Laura McClelland as our 2nd pick
The rest of our picks, anyone of Gemma Lagioia, Brenna Tarrant, Nell Morris-Dalton and Nicola Xenos would do nicely

The rest of our picks, anyone of Gemma Lagioia, Brenna Tarrant, Nell Morris-Dalton and Sarah Sansonetti would do nicely

Thanks Stan. How do you rate Georgostathis's kicking? She's been quoted as saying it's an area she wanted to improve in. At pick 7 you have to find a good kick.

It's massively important as they have the last touch rule and too often we see the ball turned over by a bad kick. Lots of wasted opportunities were caused by a bad kick under very little pressure as well during the AFLW season.

Looking at our two VFLW seasons our ability to find a target was a massive improvement this year.
