2019 Assistant Coaches Discussion

He spoke about this at length tonight. He said that he is angry with himself that he didn't do it when he kicked off his AFL career as he looks back and feels embarrassed by the things that he said to Aboriginal players at the club over his time. Didn't shy away from that at all to his credit. Say's he's a different person now and has done a lot of growing up since then.

We'll see.
Shaun Burgoyne would have never left?

Michael Voss can’t hide from it. There are reminders everywhere. Pictures of Port Adelaide’s historic first AFL premiership in 2004 adorn the walls of the club’s Alberton Oval headquarters and Power Grand Final heroes are out on the track and in coaches meetings with him.

“I’ve learnt to ignore it,’’ said former Brisbane captain and 1996 Brownlow Medallist Voss, who was on the wrong end of Port’s drought-breaking, 40-point Grand Final triumph. “That’s the best way to survive. There’s a little bit of ribbing there. “But I keep reminding them that I’m the one who’s got three (premierships) and they’ve only got one. “So I get them back, but it’s all in good fun.’’

Voss is one of six men who played in the 2004 Grand Final who currently work in the Port coaching or medical department...........
Five Power premiership players also have significant roles at the club, including three newcomers to the coaching panel — assistants Jarrad Schofield (midfield), Brett Montgomery (defence) and Dean Brogan (ruck), whose role is part-time. Chad Cornes remains development coach while Michael Wilson is a club physiotherapist. The five have been reunited for the first time at club land since the 2004 Grand Final, when Western Australian Schofield left Port to join Fremantle..............

We had some really tight games against Brisbane in the early 2000s, it was only a matter of time before we broke them. We were all on the same page that day and Voss knew they were up against it by half time.

So, recently I started driving Uber. The other night a job comes up and says "Dean". I drive around the corner in the city and standing on the footpath was Dean Brogan, Chad Cornes, Dominic Cassisi and their partners. The others all went out somewhere else, but Broges got me to take him home. I was a bit star-struck!

Anyway on the way we had a good chat about Port, the current state of things, 2004, and so on. I asked him which ex-players tended to socialise with others more and he said he, Chad and Dom were really good mates. He also said Carry and someone I don't remember were out with them earlier in the evening.

Talking about Port 2018/19, Broges said Hinkley needs to get back to what he first focused on when he came to the club - attacking football - kicking enough goals to win. It's not really a secret to anyone that we need to kick more goals.

Also talked about Clarkson and Walsh - great guys and hard, very hard guys - "old school".

I told Broges I was always a Choco fan, especially after 2004, and that quite a few people on the BF Port board were not. I asked him his opinion of Choco and he said "Oh mate, I love him!". But again, "hard man" and "old school". He said Choco didn't talk to him at all until some time during 2004 - not a single word.

He gave me a drunk "Dean Brogan" signature and said he loved talking to fans like me and if I ever see him again to come up and say hi. A memorable uber pick-up.
Hmmm. A predator driving Uber.

The official club website has Nathan Bassett listed as our Forwards Coach. Did I miss something here? Was there some announcement that he was moving from Backs to Forwards?
Not sure on official announcement but that has been common feed around here for some time. Monty backs, Schofield middle, Bassett forward. Brogan part time ruck.

Are there other teams?
Bassett as Forwards Coach is a bold move. What he did with the backs was to identify those he wanted and he made a pretty good job of it. He backed in a bunch of young guys and it worked.

He has a lot to gain from this move. If we start kicking goals again he will look like a genius.

My memory is that his Norwood sides didn't score much. This is a very bold move.

Our back-line had our midfield and some forwards pushing back there, which may have kept the oppositions score down, but completely screwed over our forward line.
How many of our backs would you trust in a one on one contest? Jonas, Hartlett maybe.
For Bassett to make the forward line function, the way he had us playing defence will have to completely change.

Ah right. I think he'll go ok. We're pretty solid all round imo.
To say the move has taken shine off of the new coaches is just dribbling for the sake of it.
Wow dribbling for the sake of it? It's my opinion m8 isn't that what this site is for ?

Can suck it!
Looks like we will be back in the assistant coach market this year. Even if Voss and Basset don’t end up at North the fact we are willing to let them go talk to other clubs midseason points to another coaching overhaul. Basically, turning over every line coach in 2 years.

Any whispers/preferences?
