Strategy 2019: Changes You Would Like

Would love to see us continue to put games into some of the kids. We may be in premiership mode but resting players like gov, JK, Hurn, shuey and Yeo every now and then will not only keep them fresh for hopefully another finals tilt but give kids like brander, O Allen and a couple of our young mids a chance to improve.

I don't believe in resting players unless they're actually carrying something worth missing a game for.

In saying that though, it all depends on the season. You can't go resting players against Gold Coast for example, lose the game and realise at the end of the year you miss the top two by 4 points.

There's no crystal balls, every game matters until mathematically you can prove otherwise. It's harder than ever to win a premiership at the moment.

Hurn Barrass Shep
Duggan Gov Jetta
Gaff Yeo Redden
Ryan JD Kelly
Rioli JK Cripps

Vardy Shuey Sheed

2nd Ruck, Hutch, Venables, Cole

From Grand Final team.

Ins Gaff, Kelly, Shep, 2nd ruck
Outs Masten, Lecras, Schoey, Lycett.

Team might not be exactly in right places especially fwd/mid/bench rotations but it will be bloody close.

Straight fwd swaps with the inclusion of Kelly, Gaff will remove Masten and most likely resume full time wing duties.

Kelly removes Lecras plays fwd and midfiield minutes. Id say 1 more preseason for Venables and hes an absolute lock in team.

Lycetts replacement 2nd ruck as Nic Nat will resume 1st ruck duties later in season.

Shep in for Schoey which is the way it went anyway.

#Lecras has said he wants to play on. Well lets see how that goes end of trade and draft period. Petruccelle adds depth. Also the expected drafting of Jarrod Cameron.

Masten may find it very hard breaking into this team after Round 3 when Gaff returns. We have Ainsworth, Hamish Brayshaw and AhChee all about to undertake another preseason. Again drafting of Jarrod Cameron.

I'd like to expand the midfield rotation. See how Duggan, Cole and Rioli go with increased minutes in there.

Sheed will forever be a hero of the club after that grand final goal, and his late season/finals form was very, very good.

That said, for him to go to that next level he has to start tackling: on grand final day, for all his heroics, he was only one of two eagles with 0 in the tackle column. If he can remedy this in the off season and take a leaf out of Yeo and Shueys and start laying and sticking tackles and improving his defensive pressure, he could end up the top line midfielder, A grade player we all hoped he could be.

I also want to see Waterman playing full time out on a wing next season. I forsee him becoming the next Andrew Embley, a tall, mobile winger with a big tank and a part of a lot of scoring chains
He's never been a great tackler but since that pec injury he's gone about 5 step backwards. We should probably invest a tackling coach for him and a few other.

Another thing that we could potentially trial in the preason season is moving Brad Sheppard up onto the wing.

Schofield is a very underrated mobile defender and was excellent in the grand final on De Goey. Sheppard coming back in doesnt necessarily mean he has to go out of the side. Keep Schofield in as part of the back 6 and play Shep higher up the ground on the wing and see if we can get it to gel.

Probably one of the more unlikey options posted in this thread, but i would be curious to see if it could work

That's because the season is finished...

Very against the best of 3 Grand Final series. Long term they should rip up the grand final contract.

That is also very outlandish to steal a final a year or 3 years later.

GF contract was due to expire in 2037, now its 2057. Clearly the “VFL” have no intention of ripping up the contract. So best of 3 GF is the best I can come up with in the confines of the contract.

Outlandish to steal a final? Consider Adelaide last year, clearly the better team all year, thrashed Richmond by 76 pts in Adelaide. If the GF was played in Adelaide as it should have been by natural justice, Richmond who can’t seem to win interstate would have been massive underdogs. That’s the robbery. If Richmond get to “host” a final in Adelaide in the future as a result, so what? I think Richmond would gladly take the 2017 premiership and lose a future final.

Whilst I don't disagree with you on the fairness aspect, I don't see why, if the 8 non vic clubs caused a big enough stink, they could tear up that contract like they did with the "one final in melbourne" rule

The “one final in Melbourne” rule had near overwhelming support for change after its absurdity was highlighted when Brisbane was denied a home prelim in 2004 because Port was the leading qualifier. Even then, it required careful negotiations with the MCC before change. The GF is different, the Vics think they own it and believe it should never change; there’s a parade, public holiday, contract etc. Why was the contract extended nearly 20 yrs ahead of time if the “VFL” was happy to change?

Agree tearing up the contract is the optimal solution but this won’t happen quickly; it will take years, possibly beyond 2037. Hence my view there is a need for a short term solution. What then is adequate short term compensation? It could be something like the leading qualifier gets WAY more tickets allocated (it is theoretically their “home” final) or something like my proposal or something totally different.

IMO there should be proper compensation for a denied home GF.

yeah screw this thread (no offense to the OP) but shit guys, we just won the whole frikn thing! Changes? the only changes we should be talking about is changing out our empties for new coldies.

A new team song and the end of the inflatable bouncy castle tunnel the team runs out of.
I think the boys like it. When I play footy i have a dozen omens that might occur when I have a banner.

At least with a bouncy castle they don’t have to worry about premonitions like don’t touch the banner at all or dodge it at all cost

keep the blowup and have big plumes of yellow and blue smoke as they run out

Hahaaa.....not for me. I like both. Kids love the bouncy tunnel. It's not just about us adults - the next generation or two is where it is at . I think the club were shrewd at recognizing this.

Magnificent little clean out we’ve had in the last few years. Our list right down to guys like Brayshaw, the Allen’s etc are all exciting prospects but we’ve got the team humming at the moment

JK plays as long as he can. Who better to teach Jarrod Brander and Oscar Allen than arguably the best forward of the last 5 years?

If Lecras can play to the standard of early last year again, then he goes around again, but he and the club need to be realistic if he falls away. Regardless, I'd like him to get a farewell game.

The backline, forward line and midfield are all elite. I'm comfortable with calling our midfield elite now and with Gaff, Nic Nat and most likely Kelly to come in, it's easily our best since 05/06/07.

Our depth is incredible, especially if we get Kelly. The biggest upside of this being that hopefully I don't have to scroll through 30 posts asking for Mutimer/Partington/Karpany to get a run. Delist please, we honestly don't have the salary cap room for Mutimer anymore.

Venables has shown glimpses, but he needs to show a lot more to play every week, sub 10 possessions just isn't enough. I'm not the wrap for Waterman that some are, but he's great depth. We should have our own team in the WAFL next year and with the competition for spots, it's the perfect opportunity to show some tough love, get the kids playing how we need them to and offer some experience in the seniors for those that earn it.

For years, I thought 2019 was our best chance to grab a flag and that hasn't changed. It's just going to have to be back to back now.

I don't disagree with you on that and thought of that after I said it. But being a grumpy almost 50 year old bloke... Bah humbug...
