Who do you fellas like for the Cup?

The group stage format is a round-robin, where all ten teams play each other once, in a single group. This means a total of 45 matches will be played, with each team playing a total of nine matches. The top four teams from the group will progress to the knockout stage. A similar format was previously used in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, though that tournament featured nine teams instead of ten.

England
South Africa
India
Australia
New Zealand
Pakistand
Bangladesh
Sri Lanka
Afghanistan
West Indies

Straight off the bat if I were to guess who the final would be between gut feel says India vs England. India, like many would be my pick to win it but if it's on Home soil in a one off, the Poms could pull it off. South Africa obviously a very strong candidate as are the great Kiwi's who were upstaged on home soil last time around in the final { Bloody beautiful }

We had an epic encounter in the group phase with the Kiwis where we almost pulled off a stunning, improbable come back getting bowled out for 151, but had them on the ropes as they conjured out a victory with 9 wickets down. Pipped us by a nose. This time around however I don't have much faith in us. Remarkably we've managed to win 4 of the last 5 world cups, we are the best. We can be forgiven for not being at the best of our abilities. You can't stay on top forever, but * we've been done a darn good job. We're still Australia and could be very dangerous if we bring our A-Game, but not feeling the vibe this time around.

What are your early leans and teams you think can cause a stir or two?

Go Aussies!

Edited - Made this thread originally but another one has been made since. All good, will have this as a predictions thread.

India's team will stand by the decision of their "government and board" over whether to boycott the World Cup game against Pakistan, says Virat Kohli.

There are doubts the match will take place after a Pakistan-based militant group took responsibility for a suicide attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The two countries are scheduled to meet on 16 June at the World Cup in England.

"The Indian team and the whole set-up was shocked and sad with what happened," said captain Kohli.

"Our stand is simple: we stick by what the nation wants to do and what the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) decides to do.

"That is basically our opinion. Whatever the government and the board decide, we will go by that and we will respect that."

At least 46 Indian paramilitary police were killed in an attack which has sparked anger and anti-Pakistan protests across India, although Pakistan has denied any involvement.

In the fallout, the BCCI called on the International Cricket Council to "sever ties with countries from which terrorism emanates".

The statement appears to support speculation India would like the International Cricket Council to ban Pakistan from the competition rather than boycotting the group game at Old Trafford in Manchester, which attracted half a million requests for 25,000 tickets.

India have won six consecutive matches against Pakistan in World Cups.

India legend Sachin Tendulkar wrote on Twitter that while it would be painful to lose potential points by not playing Pakistan this summer, he would support the decision of the BCCI.

The situation has also seen the International Olympic Committee suspend applications from India to host future events after two Pakistan athletes were denied visas to compete in the country.

Two shooters were denied entry for a World Cup event in New Delhi.

What happens if they face each other in the semi-finals or final, who knows.

Outsiders a bit compared to India and the hosts but there's absolutely no reason why Australia can't win it. Pace bowling is very strong and batting is also pretty good.

Batting will improve with Smith and Warner but it’s still not great. There’s a reason they’ve got a worse win/loss ratio than the West Indies over the last couple of years

Meh the plethora of random one day series in this era are often almost glorified practice matches with teams experimenting and resting of players. The w/l record doesn't mean that much when the real thing that everybody wants to win starts.

If it was the two years AFTER a World Cup id agree. But it’s the period in which they’ve been trying different players and combinations to prepare for a World Cup so there’s got to be at least a bit of credence placed in those results.

Would be a pretty big troll if we won it. The ROW thinks we're cooked and behind the 8-ball (England 2015 style perhaps?) and has basically written us off. Adding a sixth world cup to our cabinet would be excruciating to see for opposition sides.

Our results have been the worst in the world over the last two years, but as has been mentioned above, we frequently put out experimental trash sides. Some of the bowlers we've tried have been particularly crap. Our batting lineup is actually pretty good on paper with some good experience-Smith,Warner,Khawaja,Marsh,Maxwell. The all-rounder and maybe a batting spot are still up for grabs.

Smith is definitely underrated in ODIs averaging 52.6 at 3 with a healthy SR of 85. He also came up clutch last WC with three consecutive 50+ scores in the finals including a ton in the semi vs india. Also, while Starc has his detractors, he's one of the ODI goat fast bowlers. The rest of our lineup is solid we just need to settle on a spinner and a keeper.
I think we're definitely a dark horse.

Imran Khan to consult nuclear chiefs after India's first air strike on Pakistan in decades

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will stage an emergency parliamentary session and meet with the body in control of Islamabad's nuclear arsenal in response to India's first air strikes on Pakistan since 1971.

The two nuclear-armed neighbours have fought three wars since partition in 1947, and the majority of them have been over Kashmir — a territory both India and Pakistan claim in full.

The air strike near Balakot, a town 50 kilometres into Pakistan from the Indian border, was the deepest raid launched by India since the last of its three wars with Pakistan, but there were competing claims about any damage caused.

India said its air force jets hit a training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), the militant group that claimed credit for a February 14 suicide bombing attack that killed more than 44 Indian paramilitary police in Kashmir.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said "a very large number" of militants were killed in the strikes in northeast Pakistan, which were launched as a result of government intelligence that JeM was planning more attacks

"The existence of such training facilities, capable of training hundreds of jihadis, could not have functioned without the knowledge of the Pakistani authorities," Mr Gokhale said.

A senior Indian Government source said 300 militants had been killed in the strikes and warplanes had ventured as far as 80 kilometres inside Pakistan, but they provided no evidence.

'You all know what that means'

Pakistan has disputed India's claims of success, and later said that its own warplanes had scattered Indian jets and forced them to drop their payload over uninhabited areas, resulting in zero casualties.

Pakistan's National Security Committee (NSC), comprising top officials including Mr Khan and army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa, said the Prime Minister would "engage with global leadership to expose irresponsible Indian policy".

A government spokesperson added that a command and control authority meeting, which decides over the use of nuclear weapons, had been convened for Wednesday, and noted: "You all know what that means."

Speaking to the ABC's AM program, Dhruva Jaishankar from the Brookings Institute said Pakistan's retort was an attempt to quell further military escalation.

"Pakistan has reason to deny and downplay the effectiveness of the strikes," Ms Jaishankar said.

"It helps to manage domestic political opinion and ensure that there's not a demand for escalation, and India, I think, has been very clear that something did occur," she said.

Indians celebrate Pakistani strike

While the results of the strikes in the early hours of Tuesday were disputed, that didn't stop many in India from believing their government's version of events.

"Modi ji (Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi) has finally done it," said Sandeep Sharma, a driver in the Jammu region of India's border state of Jammu and Kashmir.

"There's a lot of anger against Pakistan here," he said.

India's opposition leaders, many of whom have banded together against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), congratulated the Indian Air Force (IAF), though they stopped short of praising the Prime Minister.

"I salute the pilots of the IAF," Rahul Gandhi, leader of India's main opposition Congress, said in a tweet.

In a village 100 metres from the Line of Control that acts as the de facto border with Pakistan, men gathered around a bunker for security forces that is under construction and shouted slogans hailing India.

On a positive note from an Australian pov, if the unthinkable does indeed happen and the world descends into nuclear winter, Australia will still be the Ashes champions!

there are no other teams worthy
the formula is simple.

win 5 (possibly 6) of the 9 pool games, and win a sudden death semi final, then who knows.

So aim for 6 wins and then anybodies from there. I think many nations can win it.
Really looking forward to it. Will be drawn out though so 5 weeks to get to semi-finals is a long time. Sides will still be tinkering with best line up for first 3 or 4 games.
World Cup was more intense when it was just 2 weeks. Been a long time since it was like that. Probably 1983 World Cup in England was last time it was close to that format. Think we got done by Zimbabwe in a shock loss then. Also remember Winston Davis about 8th Windies quick in cue then got quite a few wickets against us.

Maybe one for the unpopular opinion thread but I actually like how long the World Cup goes for. We see so much cricket where the results are fairly meaningless so the more cricket I can get where you know both sides are going 100% the better.

I think more teams should be playing in it but I'm still going to enjoy the 6 weeks of meaningful ODI cricket.

Pakistan has confirmed it carried out air strikes in Indian-controlled Kashmir and shot down two Indian jets in its own airspace, capturing one of the pilots as the conflict with its nuclear-armed neighbour continued to escalate.

"Today, Pakistan Air Force undertook strikes across Line of Control from within Pakistani airspace," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Pakistan military said Indian jets had entered Pakistan in response and two had been shot down, with one pilot captured.

More to come.

Lord's will have never seen such a police and security presence. Someone could pop Nigel Farage in the mouth to really top off the occasion (Gough I don't know if he's in the MCC but it does sound like something that would be true).

Good result vs India. I get the feeling they took the foot off the gas at 2-0 up though. We've been s**t for a fair while now, they've been great on the other hand.

It doesn't feel right tbh.
