I think it was more out of necessity than anything. Sinclair isn't much chop, despite his big ticker, and so our ruck stocks are very thin. At the very least, by keeping Naismith on the list we've ensured we have some ruck depth, even if it's not that great.

Who was taking him away from us though when we signed his extension

No one, but rucks are always on the move. They only need to play 5 good games and seems like other clubs always come sniffing. At least we've got him there on the list whenever we'll need him (as long as we're paying him whatever the inferior nut to the peanut is)

At least Sinclair is on the park though, but yeah 2021 at his age is questionable
Age is my issue. Should be fine enough to warrant the contract next year, just the 2021 season at 32 with 2 further years on his body carrying our ruck. With Naismith, while you can'r predict ACL injuries he had enough soft tissue injuries up to the point of signing his new contract that made 4 years always questionable, I guess however our ruck stocks at the time gave him leverage to ask for 4 years

I guess, but couldn’t we have waited til later in the year for Naismith?

Couldn’t we try to pinch a ruckman? Need another Ball/Jolly/Mumford

Or maybe another Pyke

Well no, he was out of contract and signed end of August last year before finals to a 3 year deal. So not a 4 year deal but how he was able to get a 3 year deal while out with an ACL is mind blowing.

Its the path we're going to have to head down, just a question of when and who is available.

Or maybe another Pyke

i suspect the ACL is the reason for the 3 year deal. the way i see it the club had big plans for sam to carry the ruck with cal forward. 3 years gives him enough time to recover from the ACL and show if he can carry the ruck. i highly doubt we overpaid him, would be lucky to be on more than $200k. smart really. if he comes good we get a year or two below his worth. if he doesnt a couple of years on below the average wage, no big deal.

Thanks for the opportunity to discuss our ruck situation and the greatest ruckman we've had in the past decade!

Pyke was everything Naismith is not. Consistent, less injury-prone (18+ games in 5/6 seasons), agile and mobile, able to take key contested marks around the ground, and a legitimate threat up forward. Remember in 2013 when he kicked 28 goals? Reid, Papley, and Franklin are the only players on our list to have ever kicked more. We're desperately lacking someone of his calibre.

I Think the bigfooty board should send me on a fact finding mission to North America in search of a ruckman

I do. Very effective player.

I wouldn't be such a pedant, but your sposed to be the research room guy so fwiw..

Tippett is still on the list.
Kennedy, McVeigh, Menzel exceeded 28.
Hayward and Heeney in their 2nd years reached 28.

Darcy Parish dropped again by the Bombers. I think he's a pretty good player, and really developed over the past year or so. Could be a good target if he's out of favour.
Lloydy has previously stated that his hands aren't that clean. Still worth a look IMO. We need to look at the players who are playing ressies, just as Junior was.
