Not to toot my own horn, but I am about to toot it hard, but the guy I wanted to draft instead of Cameron Ling (Charlie Constable) just got a rising star nomination for round 2 with 31 disposals, 7 clearances, 4 tackles and a goal.

Glad we really don't need a big bodied inside midfielder.

I'd have rather taken Higgins or Oscar Allen personally. No idea how Constable lasted to the late 30's though.

But we had Foote to play as an inside midfielder when we drafted Ling.....

Even if Matthew does come good I thought it was painfully obvious we needed inside midfielders in that draft and we instead seemed to avoid midfielders in general at any cost.

At the time we needed outside class even more and we probably still do. No one could predict Kennedy, Hanners (injury + form), Parker (hasn't come on from more than being solid), etc wouldn't be working now. Now we need inside mids, but we need them as tall insides ideally. Rowbottom is one, but we need another few now.

Except we could as Constable was drafted at the end of 2017, by which point we had seen a slight decline in Kennedy's performances, a massive decline in Hannebery's and Parker was old enough that we were able to tell he had plateaued.

To a degree. I'm more annoyed we didn't have another pick in the 30's, although McCartin at pick 33 is a very good choice. I just find it weird out of all the players around that area, Ling stands out, and I felt at the time we'd taken an almighty gamble. Players like Ed Richards, Jack Higgins, Will Powell, Oscar Allen, Lachie Fogarty, and Tim Kelly were around that area.

Ling has been stiffed by his injury. Apparently the Club was delighted by what they saw in the 2018 pre-season. Who knows, he may end up being a great player.

Maybe so, but in terms of need the Swans need a big bodied midfielder who can find the ball and win the clearances a lot more than we need a running halfback since we already have Stoddart and now McInerney for that in theory.

I think we have some already. It would be good if we better mix and match who contests clearances. For example I would prefer JPK specialise in stoppages around the ground but rarely go in for centre bounce clearances.

I am going to be really pissed off if the Swans don't use our first draft pick in 2019 on a big bodied midfielder, especially since our 2020 pick is likely going to Errol Gulden who, while looking great, is certainly not a big bodied midfielder. He seems more like a Lachie Neale type.

This and I’d go further and say our second rounder should be the same. Target inside mids we need them

At the time he was an absolute Hail Mary though. It’s more annoying when Richards, Allen, etc look A grade talents

A lot of comments here about who we should perhaps have drafted instead of Ling. He can't help that he had that toe injury. Word from the training track prior was that he was doing wonderfully. Looking at the highlights reel he looked pretty good too. Don't begrudge that choice one bit. Remains to be seen whether becomes a bust or not. Do agree that we need more big bodied inside mids and 19 draft should focus on that. Probably will.

Considering Ling was taken before Stoddart and McInerney, it would make those two players the error in judgement from the perspective of not taking an inside player, not Ling (without the benefit of hindsight).

All I’ll say is we sure as anything better take mids with all our picks this year and 2 of them should be 190cm ones. It’s why I want a top 5 selection. The good ones go early. We need one.

I am not sure of the draft this year but I would ideally like us to also look at a potential future tap ruckman as well.

There’s a few that will likely go very early but not sure on the depth. I’m more a fan of trading for ruckmen

But we took Ling before either of those two? Don’t forget we are the slow and boring Swans who lack pace and foot skills, but you’re begrudging us drafting a player with pace and good foot skills?

Is it possible you could be letting your frustration over 18 months of inaction from our first round pick cloud your judgment on what a logical and required pick he actually was?
