we were linked to him weren't we? i think i was into him from memory. if its the kid i'm thinking of man that'd be a good get!
Yes we were. We tried to live trade with the Giants to get him.

He looks a talent, but his body worries me. Missed most of his 18's footy and has already broken down this year.

now we are talking. we need to use our good start and optimism to nail some targets. we should be able to wrap up tomlinson no worries given his management were keen a couple years back. which would mean we don't have to worry so much about browns age, nor carlisles back. giants will be prioritising their mids too. we'll get him i think.

martin i'm not sold on. i think long and parker are going well. i don't know where we see martin playing? would he force out someone like kent? is he a free agent?

i think we need a genuine inside mid. what can we pry out. a fit luke parker would be amazing. wines would be my wish.

we need to be mindful of not bringing in too much change.
He was never coming Tomlinson

Seriously - 88 games from a Pick 17 is considered a bust?

Strange since the average games for Pick 17 over 35 drafts is only 68.

Pick 22 has averaged 44 games so McKenzie (38) is pretty much on par.
It might be a bit harsh but I thinking in terms of players that consolidated their position in the best 22. The best 22 for a contender is more the point.

As it stands Dunstan hasn’t been able to do this. Overall of those 88 games he has been a below average level player for his position. Is he a player that would be best 22 on a contender? Or a depth player around 23-26 on the list? I think the latter. If that’s your standard then have him as a middling first round pick. It’s a low bar though just saying.

That “bust” Mc Kenzie is looking pretty settled in our 22. ( concussion aside.)

White has been emergency lately (twice?) Not writing him off just yet either.
(Edit: OK, wrong White as pointed out by ARR)

Easy to put Paddy and Goddard in that category with hindsight, but no one can predict major injuries. Although the diabetes issue should have been a huge red flag, esp for a number one pick.
Spencer White.

I can definitely see the argument for McKenzie as a middling pick.

It’s all in hindsight. There is good and bad luck involved.

Yes pls to Jack Martin. Is playing very well this year from what I’ve seen and he’s pretty versatile; half back, wing or forward.
I think he’s just about to hit his peak. Over his injuries and playing a very good forward roll. Averaging over 20 disposals, with a lot contested and his tackling has been elite. Would slot in perfectly on the half forward line and relief wing. I’d happily give our first pick this year, that’s looking closer to mid teens.

Saints' swoop? Giant, Sun in St Kilda's sights

ST KILDA is again in the hunt for Adam Tomlinson, two years after nearly snaring the versatile Giant.

And AFL.com.au understands the club is also interested in out-of-contract Gold Coast forward Jack Martin.

The Saints are among the clubs believed to be hovering around Tomlinson, who has become a valuable player for Greater Western Sydney through defence and the wing.

The Giants are keen to keep Tomlinson and are believed to have put forward an offer to retain the unrestricted free agent, but discussions are considered unlikely to progress for now.

Tomlinson, 25, met with the Saints at the end of 2017 and was close to switching clubs.

However, his strong end to that season – he was one of the Giants' best in their preliminary final loss to Richmond – saw him remain with the club, where he was contracted through to the end of 2019.

This time, he would come at no trade cost, and given his unrestricted FA status, the Giants would not be able to match a rival's deal to keep him.

The Oakleigh Chargers product has been linked to a move back to Victoria throughout his career since joining the Giants with pick No.9 at the 2011 NAB AFL Draft.

Martin, too, is on the Saints' radar, with contract talks for the 24-year-old likely to start in the second half of the season.

Essendon was strongly linked to Martin at the end of last season, but he remained at Gold Coast, where he is contracted until the end of this year.

The West Australian has played 86 games since he joined the Suns as the first pick in the 2012 'mini-draft'.

The Saints sit in second position on the ladder after an excellent start to the season and appear likely to be proactive in the trade and free agency space this year.

AFL.com.au reported last week speedy Swan Zak Jones, who is also out of contract this year, has been linked with the Saints.

Last year they were unable to land Dylan Shiel or Jared Polec despite significant interest in the pair but did trade for Swans premiership midfielder Dan Hannebery.

Hannebery is yet to play a game for the club as he "rebuilds" his body, and is expected to be back in the second half of the season.

Hunnet percent. I can’t remember which game this year it was but he looked more confident in himself or maybe his role than I had ever seen.

What are feeling re: Billings and Gresham's next contracts?

Feeling pretty confident Gresham will re sign but something tells me it will be harder to get Billings across the line. Just a feeling.

Either way, what do we offer them length and $ wise?
Joey Montagna said on radio the other day that Billings would sign a deal with us on big money. I’d back his intel.

You get the feeling he’ll explode next year with another full pre season. Can see it turning now.. even in the tough games, he’s had consistent impact. It’s a yes from me.

Darcy Parish dropped again for Essendon. Can't break into that midfield of Shiel, Heppel and Merret.

I don't mind him as a player, just doesn't seem to he getting the opportunity.

His asking price would be very cheap right now.
I'd do him and pick 28 for Gresh and Carlisle.

Parish has been so underwhelming since being drafted. He’s not a massive accumulator, he’s not a contested beast & he isn’t damaging. Very vanilla. For what he would cost, pass!
I'm not sure he'd cost a lot, you can't expect anymore than a second round pick for a guy that can't cement a spot in the 22.

I was impressed with his in his first year or two. Seems to have been played out of position since.

This is Dodoro we are talking about. He’d want a top 20 pick minimum.

If we got him he would be competing with Sinclair & Newnes, both superior players IMO.

I would much prefer Martin who is far more versatile & damaging as a player.

What about Laverde? Apparently kicked 6 in the VFL a week or two ago & still can’t get a game in the ones.

Both those guys have a bit of age on him so it's probably no surprise they are in front of him right now. Parish was regularly getting mid 20's touches in his first year of footy. I'd he confident he'd go past those two if he was able to play the role that suits him.

He'd be a lot cheaper than Martin, I don't care if it's Dodoro, you can't expect a first round pick for him if he isn't playing senior footy.
