I got a question. Forgive me if it has been dealt with already in these pages.

Can Roarke and Lachie Young just continue next year on the rookie list or does something need to be done to retain them?

We can but that'll mean we have no room on our rookie list.

Lots of footage, tried to download, but stuffed it. Google Will Gould Glenelg Football Club plenty of footage.

Excellent kick, does play like Shannon Hurn maybe a KFC loving clone.

Challenge: Drop to 95 kg by the draft.

Thanks.

He's a great kick and has a bit of campaigner in him. Like what I saw.

Lachie Young has spent less than 3 years as a rookie and has a contract for 2020 already so doesn't need to be re-drafted. We could upgrade him to the senior list, or keep him on the rookie list depending on our choice.

Roarke Smith does not have a contract for 2020 and has spent less than 3 years as a rookie since he was last drafted (for the second time) in 2017. He was initially rookie drafted in 2014 and had to be drafted again in 2017. If the club wanted to retain him as a rookie in 2020, we would just need to agree on a contract.

Would you take Callan Ward back at the end of this year?
Depends on the cost. Seems very happy up there so hard to foresee him moving but I given the rumours around his departure it’s hard to imagine many fans wouldn’t welcome him back with open arms.

Hawks are apparently keen on Worrell, see him as a similar player to Nick Haynes.

They are who I see as our biggest threat for McAsey. Think there is a genuine hope he slides to us
I have done multiple drafts well three and McAsey goes to Port Adelaide at Pick 12 in every one, in fact they
got Fisher McAsey, Jackson Mead and Will Day, but not in that order. McAsey, Day, Mead (bid).

Port couldn’t find room for Howard in their best 22 defence. Why would they take McAsey? He will take a few years to come through and IF they wanted a a developing tall, you keep Howard.

Port will be more interested in midfield players, which is the strongest part of this draft. They may even look at Jackson but I think this is a great draft to go midfield.

He’s a very good player, but an inside mid that would be 31 by the time he runs out for us and did his ACL at 29 wouldn’t be high on my priority list.

If he wants to come home to Melbourne the Bombers make a lot more sense.

You could be right, they may grab a Luke Partington or a Cole Gerloff from the SANFL as a previously nominated
or listed player who knows. I did not get why they traded Dougal Howard or why St Kilda gave an extra year to
Nathan Brown after trading Howard in maybe they see him as a forward. Most of the good mids were gone well
before pick 12 in my draft, but who knows in the real thing.

Rumours of his departure? Wow.

What about a scenario where it is not Robertson but someone who is equal to or marginally behind McAsey on “best available” and also a less preferred “fit”. I’m all for best available but my question is in the context of a lot of people saying you can throw a blanket over 5-15 (which I understand may not be true or agreed with).

Not sure I follow that trading up is dangerous, rather I would say that making mistakes earlier in the draft seems to hurt more than in later rounds. Only commenting on the risk ignores the other key element of risk-reward.

Using your example from earlier, sure I’m happy we drafted Bont and not Boyd, but I bet Collingwood in hindsight wish they took the dangerous approach to trade up and get Bont before us rather than getting Scarenberg.
If McAsey is considered best available, I'd take him in a heartbeat.
A defender who can mark the ball, no brainer. Best available with out first pick, then consider needs with later picks.

For what it is worth, Cal Twomey rates Weightmann extremely highly. skillful and works hard according to Twomey.
My concerns with Weightman are his consistency and lack of pressure at times. He had a game in the championships (I think against WA) where he only managed 4 touches, and has also had times where his tackle count was <=1. You can't have your small forwards being passengers on gameday, and it makes me concerned about taking him at 13 unless we're confident that he's just had some off days or niggles.

Who's your favourite at our pick then Virgin Dog?

If we're talking players who may realistically be there, McAsey is my number 1. Would love to get Flanders but he surely goes top 5 considering how good his form has been. I still think that Weightman would be a solid pick at our 13 even if it is a little early.

In order of preference for players that could be there at our pick:
  • McAsey
  • Gould
  • Weightman
  • Stephens/Sharp (probably about equal to be honest. I would probably take Sharp over Stephens given that Stephens is too similar to Hunter)
I would also expect us to bid on Henry before any others if he's there. Absolutely perfect player for us, but I do concede that Fremantle will match the bid. Just think that if the NGA/FS player is the ideal pick, you should bid and make the club match.

If, by some disaster, all these players are gone and nothing that great slides, I'd hope we look to trade down/out. We don't need more inside mids and half backs. At least Sharp looks to have scope to play on a wing

I honestly have no idea why I said that the way I did. Meant to say that if he wanted to come back then I’d hope we’d welcome him back. Guess I wasn’t sure if I was replying to a loaded question or hypothetical.
