If we are looking to add ruck depth then Charlie Comben could slide to us at pick 53. He represented Vic Country and is a late improver apparently, quite mobile and strong overhead mark. Nick Bryan would be another ruckman to consider, 202cm, played for Vic Metro, just turned 18 and is very mobile. It probably goes against the grain for Bev to have another ruck in the wings but in comparison to other club's lists we are a bit under-manned in that area. Or, is this my bias that I don't rate our current backups: Trengove, Sweet and Schache very highly?

Pretty sure the AFL make the clubs wait 5 min between calling names out to stretch the night out.
Really the whole set up is ridiculous
Yep, the cameras went to Kemp about 30 seconds before "Pick is In" was displayed and his name was read out. Just a charade.

If Ben Skol drops to our next pick do we take him?
I think we really need tall backman depth, who's in the mix. I'll be also keen for Ben Kelly Ruck/Tall back with our last pick.

Do we really need tall backman depth? If so, we would have been better off keeping Fletch around. Trengove, Le Young, Cordy, Keath can all play as key defenders while La Young, Crozier and Wood can all play tall if needed. More than happy with our key defensive stocks currently, with most of them still yet to reach their peak.
Speedy wing type, general forward and ruck depth would be the only holes I could identify on our list, and even the latter two are a stretch imo.

I think we need wing speed more than another forward now. I'm also a big fan of Ben Kelly, would love to pick him up.
I would hope that Vandermeer and Cavarra would feature next year to add a decent bit of leg speed to the side. A fully developed Vandermeer is basically a JJ clone so that should cover a wing if he does pan out.

Otherwise, Brady Rowles with our later pick should be a good option. Had a sub-3 second 20m sprint, good acceleration and a massive vertical leap (his 98cm at the combine was daylight ahead of Bergman in second with 90cm).

I’d love us to take a legit small forward (tackle pressure, elite speed) type with one of our late picks.
Ned Cahill would hopefully be there at our pick in the 50s. Only thing that concerns me about another forward is I doubt how much we can be playing TWO new draftees while remaining competitive. I'd bet whoever we picked later would play in the VFL for a while, especially since they'd also be competing with Cavarra for a spot

I still 1 more backman would be great for depth long term.
Trengrove I think is in the last year of his contract, Le Young looks fantastic but consistency still not there and Keath is 28 and recovering from surgery.

We have just drafted one, I don’t see the need for two, unless it’s Rowe. Better to get some older state league guys who are mature forwards/KPD. Depth is important but so is having a strong VFL team and culture.

We will have enough youth from the next draft, we need older guys. In saying that, I would be watching to see IF Gould or Bianco slide enough for us to trade up for them. Otherwise, draft mature ages only.

Still have my fingers crossed that Sokol is there at our pick. Will come straight in round 1 and fills the void of Dickson long term.

Nothing wrong with a bit of competition for spots. And injury cover for that matter.

Weightman is a good pick that can play now and can learn from loyd and dicko in there last years Im hoping a combination of ryan byrnes hilder kelly mahony for our two final picks , vandemeer is our outside pace waiting in the wings im sure he gets games this year, really proud of what the dogs have done go dogs

And there's also Brad Lynch. He can play a bit.

Our forward line needs at least two smalls imo.

Do we actually need more smalls ?
We were one of the most offensive teams for most of last season with no issues on the scoring front. If we’re “needing” more smalls because that’s what Richmond are doing I think we need to re assess exactly what the smalls are for. Richmond play that type of footy right across the park. They don’t have a lot of naturally gifted players, their style revolves around manic pressure at the ball carrier, the receiver and the following link up. So naturally they’d have a few small fwds in the 22.
We don’t play that way. If we’re wanting a little more pressure up forward, we demand it from the 5-6-7 fwds that line up each game.

Also, who’s spots do these 2-3 smalls take from the following players ?

Bruce
Naughton
Schace
Dale
Lloyd
Dickso
Weightman ( eventually )
Resting mid

Greene
Cavarra
West (possibly)

If we bring in 2-3 small fwds with the intent to play them. Only 3-4 of the above players get games.

I think small player roles up forward are only necessary if that’s the types of fwds you have and they have developed in to very good small fwds. Drafting with the sole purpose to play extra small fwds is flirting with danger imo because a small fwd who’s pressure game is off, doesn’t offer much else. Unless you’re an Eddie Betts or Charlie Cameron type and then I say, good luck randomly picking 2-3 of them up in the draft.

I hate the idea of going for 'needs' with late picks. late picks are already unlikely to become stars so narrowing the field even further by going for a 'type' is not a great idea.
Serious question. If you don’t go for needs with late picks when do you think you should go for them? Are you not a fan of the “ best available “ mantra for your first round pick? My view is late picks are a raffle so you try and get lucky with an area of need rather than select someone who would be competing with say Bont, Dunkley or Macrae for a spot.

Think he will? Norf seem kee.
it would be touch and go I reckon unless we trade up for him I think he could go earlier than 50.

We have a pretty good recent history of taking guys who have come back from difficult situations (McLean had to change TAC Cup sides to get a look in for example or Daniel and his height) and/or really coachable types (Bont, Bazza Smith) so I'd look out for those types at our last few picks.

Part of this is why I picked Josh Morris and Jack Bell in the BF Phantom.
