I’d argue that key defence was a need. We’re pretty thin down there and hard to address that next season with MacPherson and JUH using up all of our draft picks.

We have keath young trengove aswell as those who take medium/talls in cordy young wood crozier. Have no issues with the guys we picked up. Addressed the 4 needs of mine. Outside speed, small forward, footy smarts, aggression/pressure

Why would a future 4th have any affect on whether we get JUH or not?

I think we will have a few players leaving next year via trade. This will help our lack of picks next year.

Our 5 midsize defenders in the final this year were Sucklimg, Wood, Duryea, JJ & Crozier.

Come R1 next year they'll be 31, 30, 28, 27 & 26.

Why are people so fizzy on us adding depth in this area? Our list managers actually are considering how the list is looking a couple of years down the track FFS.

Because we used up a first round pick on Richards. He needs a spot. We have Lynch, Vandermeer. Caleb Daniel comes back in. Also have Khamis, Smith, Williams and Young.

How much depth do you need?

Not against you mate. The pick we gave up is a drop in the ocean on what will be a first round bid for marra. At worst it will push our 2021 fourth into a fifth

I’m confused by our picks tonight.

In a nutshell ...

All of us on BF read all the pundits' assessment of draft candidates, assiduously looked through all the phantom drafts, watched a few highlights and duly decided who we should draft.

Meanwhile our recruiting team ignored nearly everything in the media and did their own research building on the intelligence files they'd accumulated on this year's crop over the last few years. They considered the short and medium term needs of the list. They listened to the reports coming in from regional scouts, they interviewed players, they watched them at the combine, they talked to their friends, family, coaches, doctors and teachers about their personal qualities. They would have done some risk assessment and probably did a whole lot of other stuff. Then they made up their own mind who we should draft after running it past Bevo and Bains and Grant.

We love most of the selections the club has made in recent years. Often we've said "WHO?" on draft night but they've mostly turned out OK.

So here we are on yet another draft night, once again suitably outraged and "sick of this club" because they haven't picked who we or perhaps Gary Buckenara thought we should pick.

It's ok, maybe I was wrong. Time will tell but one day we will have to pay for any deficits and it looks to me like we are going to make them bigger and bigger. We could be the St Kilda of 2022 if we don't watch out. Imagine if we need a list clean out and all we have is picks 60, 80 & 100. That'll be great.

You can act blase but it is going to be very interesting in a few years time to see who was still on the table when that pick was made.

1 target pick and 2 late speculative picks in a top heavy quality draft so I think we walk away happy.

Not sure I would have gone with another small bloke, his knee doesn’t bother me, but to me it looks like speed was the trait we went for this year so not much more we could have done imo

But how much of our list do you wanna dedicate to it? What about the other 17 spots and depth there? Next year in key defence we have Trengove, Young, Keath, Cordy. Keath and Trengove are both late 20’s and Young hasn’t proved much at all.
