As some one who stays out of the draft discussion I'm curious what people's opinions are on our position this year. I get we have 16 and 19 as our first picks. Are these picks worth much this year? Sorry for the noob question I'm not sure where we are at list wise as I had taken abit of a step back from this forum and footy in general.

I wasn’t enthused by the level of play during the national champs. This isn’t to say that there won’t be players who go on to have healthy AFL careers. Supposedly there are a couple at the top and then an even group after that through to 20/30. Conole stayed somewhere about mids still being a focus as you need a strong midfield and then they can also be played in other areas. One area that we are set is KPD. Have concerns with our KPF and depth and after Charlie who are our other small forwards of similar speed? Am hoping to see Ely Smith, T.Berry, McFadyen and Thomas Joyce have a good pre-season and push their way into calculations for pre-season games and add to our midfield. At 15/19 (most probably will be pushed back at least 2 spots) there will be players who can add to our list it’s just up to see if they can find those diamonds in the rough.

All our boys doing well. Impressed with Coleman's pressure and Michael's disposal and inside 50s. Crozier has been a bit quieter but has had some penetrating rebound 50s.
Yep, they all did well. Coleman some real silk, Michael looks like a good running player and Crozier was much more involved in the 2nd half. Michael and Crozier similar types. The midfeilders were the most impressive. Elijah Hollands from Murray bushrangers a beauty and BOG for mine, Will Phillips very hard at it and Eddie Ford very good, especially his 2 goals.

Does anyone follow the VFL/WAFL/SANFL closely? There have been some real success stories in the past couple of years drafting mature players from the second tier level. Are there any standouts that we should be looking at that could make an impact next year and beyond?

Wouldn't say I follow them closely, but I have been looking at a few mature age prospects that we could use. Sokol from Subiaco and Riccardi from Werribee would be handy goalkickers, and Partington from Glenelg (formerly of West Coast) deserves another chance at the top level, he looks like an AFL-quality midfielder. Sokol won top goalkicker in the WAFL, Riccardi won the best young player award in the VFL and Partington win the Magarey medal.

Just passing on a message from Briz “that in my uneducated opinion, I believe the State leagues have been picked clean in the last two drafts and this years SSP and mid season draft.”

Papley has nominated Carlton, they’ve got pick 8. We’ve got 15 and 19. Possible opportunity to move up the draft board as they also want to get Martin.

Just to add to the Jake Riccardi conversation I think that KPF is a need so why not.

I'm wondering how to value that uneducated opinion.

Depends on what value you attach to uneducated opinions in general?

I mean, if I want medical advice I ask a doctor, if I want legal advice I ask a lawyer, so if I wanted advice on the strength of State footy leagues I suppose I'd probably ask someone who knew a bit about them?

He should jump on the gold coast bandwagon with all those draft picks they have.
Sigh:rolleyes:

Edit: not sure why there are some on here who target Briz. He is an unabashed fan of not only the AFL draft but also American sports. He spends hours of his own time to be educated on the area and for some on here is a valuable resource. But then again who needs draft picks, so over rated aren’t they, when Hugh and Berry rip a game apart next year maybe keep that in mind.

Firstly, BRAB was clearly joking.

Secondly, Briz can defend himself, but I am sure he'd be the first to admit he can come across as 'draft first, football second' and that's fine. I've seen him rib posters and question opinions and that's great, but that doesn't disqualify him from others questioning the validity of his opinion, especially when he presents it as fact. This is all good, healthy discussion with a few jokes thrown in for good measure.

Wasn’t a direct quote towards Brab so apologies to him more in general. Bit hard for him to defend himself at the moment and maybe that’s where it stemmed from.
