Hawthorn rumoured to be trading their 2020 first to get Elijah Taylor once their F/S Maginness has been bid on. Would you do that deal for #21? Personally I wouldn't, the talent available will be too great, but I'd listen to offers.

I would pretty happily - I don't think they'll make the finals, and that'd give us three first rounders for next year. The way I see it, I think it's unlikely that anyone we draft this year will have a significant impact at senior level in the next few years - whereas that first rounder could be traded for someone who will.

Good thinking. It also solves the problem of needing to find another list spot for an academy player.

Obviously we’re making that decision with the knowledge of who is left on board at that pick.

We’d also have to be asking for a later pick back. Most likely a pick in the late 50’s, depending on where their residual pick lands.

If Trent Rivers is still available I wouldn’t be making the deal. So to Will Gould.

Otherwise I make the deal.

Pick 21 for, at worst pick 63 and Hawthorn future first.

As for Elijah Taylor, he’s a seriously talented, talented footballer.

He is also a serious go home risk, so I’ve heard. Not due to homesickness, but if he can handle the professional environment. He struggled with the WA academy and state team commitments, having to be convinced multiple times to stick with it.

I still predict a trade to get us back into the 1st round at this stage. Not high into the first round, but into the mid teens.
A lot of teams trying to make that trade.
Adelaide
Hawthorn
Geelong
Essendon

I’d sooner trade out 21 than try and trade into the late first round.

Silk would be a great mentor

Kind of like the opposite to what we did with the Port trade?
Nah. More like 21+34 for 16+52. That'd be the sort of trade with Port Adelaide, and I haven't looked at points or anything, but I'm predicting we end up with 2 15-35 picks, and 2 late picks, rather than 3+1 as current.

EDIT: To confirm, absolutely zero inside information, and absolutely zero rumour that I've heard along these lines. Just me taking a stab in the dark.

You realise we traded pick 16 and 52 to Port.

Secondly Port won’t trade back because the whole reason they traded us pick 29 was to get ahead of a mid 20’s bid on Jackson Mead.

Thirdly that trade is basically Port giving us their 2020 future pick for a net over all loss.

Absolutely. I’m not sold on this draft crop at all. Four out of our five from last year haven’t even got a game. 3 first rounders next year would be very handy either to move up, trade or to do both.

Why did we get rid of our 1st round pick only to trade back in? The only way that makes sense is if there is a slider who we really want in draft night. The question Is what premium would we have to pay to do that.

They've tried it before saying the same thing and failed. Dayle Gartlett wasnt it?

They did try with Garlett, but he was always a long shot. No other club would touch him. Was very much behavioural and character issues with him.

My understanding is that it’s purely cultural with Taylor.

He’s supposed to be a good kid with good character.

Yes seems like we are collecting first round picks for trades now that we have got there abouts, reminds me of the approach of another highly successful team of the recent past.

Stephen Conole on tomorrow afternoons AFL draft preview show. Runs from 1pm to 3pm Queensland time.

On today’s show, Sydney’s head recruiter Kinnear Beatson said Sydney would not bid on Tom Green at pick 6.

If Twomey’s late mail phantom draft is close, I’d say it Trent Rivers and Jeremy Sharp look like the best possible outcome for our first two picks.

Rivers might of played as a half back in the U18 champs, but at WA Colts he captained East Fremantle and played as an inside mid.

Rivers ceiling is as a taller version of Lachie Neale. He’s faster, but not fast if you understand, and is one of those players who seems to have time on his hands and always makes the right choice by hand or foot.

Sharp is also from East Fremantle, but played the season at WAFL level. He is genuinely outside, but has express pace, and when not pressured can kick very long and accurate. His floor is Tom Cutler. His ceiling is what we hoped Tom Cutler could be.

Rivers and Sharp would feel like quiet a haul when taking into consideration adding an extra first rounder next year and Ah Chee as a walk in best 22.

While neither would be considered ready to go round one or even this year, both have good strengths that could be developed into solid (or better) best 22 players
