This was from me for would you Draft Central

6 Miles Bergman

Bergman had a very quiet game by his standards and was well held by Calder’s Ben Overman. Bergman’s poor game was not through lack of effort since he still led hard to provide an option up forward, it was disappointing that Sandringham did not move him into the middle in the last quarter to try and get him some touch going into their preliminary final next week. Bergman finished with four marks and four disposals.
Thanks for that........4 disposals in a big game is somewhat disappointing. How did he go the next week?

I’m not the biggest Bergman fan but in his defence he did work hard that game but the player that manned him up did an outstanding job, didn’t give him in inch and I’m sure Bergman could have had a more productive game if the coaches identified it earlier and put him up the ground or in the middle.

He was pretty good the next week, had 14 touches and kicked a goal in what was a dirty day for most Sandy players

I read Bergman only got 4 touches in one of the finals........bit of a worry or perhaps injury? A draft guru raised it as a concern somewhere in one of his summaries. Dont remember who he was.
Seeing as eDPS has answered, I have a different comment.

Big reason I dislike our draft position is that we sit outside of what I consider to be the top tier of talent.

For me, Gould is the dream scenario, where a player from that top tier slides to our pick.

But I’m just some random sitting at home watching a few games and highlights on his computer, and reading the actual draft watchers.

I feel like our Draft position is prime for picking up a Top Tier Ruckmen that slides down the draft. Very interesting times ahead. I'd expect us to be chasing pace for the halfback and wings in the draft as a Need.

There’s only one U18 ruckman who’s considered a potential top tier ruck, and he’s very much in the Stef Martin mould, with a better kick.

However he’s unlikely to last to our pick.

The rest, are considered late or rookie picks at best.

Looks like a light-on draft for outside players and wing. Outside midfielders seem to be either good at disposal with poor endurance or the other way around. Jeremy Sharp and Dylan Stephens appear to stand out, rest like Shute/Rowles/Mott/Byrnes -you can throw a blanket over and pencil them for pick 30 onwards.

I don’t believe we have to look for a traditional winger such as Jeremy Sharp.

Neither McCluggage or M.Robbo are traditional wingers, but they play wing in our system.

If you listened to the interview with Mitch Robinson where he talked about playing wing and what’s expected from Fagan in regards to the Lions game style, a winger such as Sharp, or Tom Cutler doesn’t play that way.

Dylan Stephens would be ideal, once he puts on some muscle, but he’s going top 10 more than likely.

Otherwise Zac Bailey or Tom Berry could play wing in our system. If you listened to the Roar Deal 2018 post draft podcast, Steve Conole talked about Tom Berry playing up forward and then moving on to a wing as he develops his tank.

Cedric Cox or Starcevich could play wing if they develop their endurance and contested game.

We could look at a half forward/wing such as Bergman, or a half back/wing such Trent Bianco, in the draft to develop as a wing.

Or there’s Mitch O’Neill from Tassie who played wing for the Allies, and though lightly built has that contested side to his game.

Jay Rantall (from the GWV Rebel’s and South Warnnambool) has a very similar game to Mitch Robinson as an inside mid, and has elite endurance, with pace and power.

Or there’s a few in our academy this year and next who can, and have, played wing or outside mid.

And as for Will Gould, he'll slide faster than a greased up pig being tackled by a hillbilly (and we won't touch him either).

The bolded bits are the interesting ones. Our system and structure worked most of the year and less so in finals, I wonder if the management would place disposal accuracy to I50 slightly higher now and start introducing that traditional winger back again. We tried to hang on to Cutler by the looks of it, which adds some strength to this theory.

We didn't rate tagger either but there came a time when our structure was well settled that we were able to add NRobbo who played his role in semifinal. Pure winger with accurate long kick, and better outside run/pace might be another area we could have a re-think on.

I like the idea of Cox on wing, has the pace and good disposal. he looked very composed when kicking into F50 in Round 23 as well. Hope he develops the endurance to take this role on.

Why do you think that? You seem very certain that the club wouldn’t be interested. Inside info or just having a stab in the dark?

Why wouldn't the club look at Gould. A strong running rebounding half back, a good mark, beautiful long kick and he lowers his eyes. He ready for AFL and with a touch of fine tuning could be a long term player for us. Already has the build and does not have to strengthen the body much. Only needs to go through the process of improvement. Would be great get.

Maybe it is the ’fine tuning’ that Clubs feel, might be the hard part?
There was something that I heard in an interview which threw me a little, something he said, which basically suggested - oh, stuff it, I am just going to do it anyway, when advised by Coaches to be smarter with the way he uses the ball and that he mostly tries to take the hardest option when sometimes the easiest kick is the best option.

Jeremy Sharp is so outside he runs around the boundary with umpire. If they can’t find their own ball then it’s highly likely they don’t succeed so if he can’t do it at a junior level he most probably won’t do it at AFL level.

Agree, I’m a Gould fan and have my fingers crossed we can nab him with our first pick. I have a feeling GC get in beforehand though, as he also has a strong connection with their young SA boys.

Will be interesting in general to see who we take with 16 and 21 if we dont trade up. I wouldnt even rule out trying to get up a few spots with 1 pick and trading 21 into next year. We dont need a lot of picks this year, and we seem to like the top 12ish talents. Reckon we would be happy to get around 12 or 13 and simply take the slider.

Next years draft not great, but wouldnt be the worst thing to have an extra pick for trading at worst.

Id be happy if we were to grab a Jackson and Gould for example, both potential sliders but unlikely. Think we are at that point in our drafting (especially when we wont have top 10 draft picks playing finals) where we simply take the slider/best available talent. Not really target needs.
