LIST CHANGES

Sam Skinner, Corey Lyons, Matt Eagles and Archie Smith have been delisted, with the Brisbane Lions committed to retaining them on either their senior or rookie list, dependent on what is available following the 2019 NAB AFL Draft.

General Manager of Football David Noble said the list changes were important to ensure the Club has the best chance of attaining elite talent at the upcoming draft.

“We want to continue to strengthen our list at the upcoming draft, so believe this change is necessary,” Noble said.

“The Club will aim to explore its Academy and father-son options at the upcoming draft, so will require capacity to do so.

“We do intend to recommit the players either on the senior or rookie list following the draft and we will seek permission from the AFL for the players to attend training and meetings as scheduled.

“At his request, we are open to Archie exploring his options as a delisted free agent during this time.”

Eagles has been a Category B Rookie with the Lions since 2016 when he was drafted by the Club via Foxtel’s The Recruit program. In his three years at the Lions the key defender has played in four AFL matches and won two NEAFL premierships. His 2018 season was cut short due to an abdominal/groin injury which later required surgery. Eagles was unable to crack the senior side in 2019.

Sam Skinner was recruited to the Lions at the 2015 NAB AFL Draft. He played his first and only AFL game in the Lions Round 17, 2017 clash against West Coast at Subiaco Oval and kicked one goal. The 22-year-old has had multiple injuries during his time at the Lions but enjoyed an injury-free season with the NEAFL premiership side in 2019, where he produced consistent performances in the forward line.

Corey Lyons is still to make his AFL debut after three seasons with the Lions. The inside midfielder has been prolific at NEAFL level with 2019 his strongest season yet, where he averaged 29 disposals a game.

Archie Smith was recruited to the Lions at the 2013 AFL Rookie Draft and has played 11 senior games in his six years in the Den. In 2019 the ruckman played two AFL games and was an important member of the Lions 2019 NEAFL premiership side.

So we have 4 National Draft picks and 3 Rookie Draft picks, and a special dispensation from the AFL to redraft Eagles as a Cat B rookie.

If Archie goes to another club, then Eagles probably gets drafted as a Cat A rookie to be our 3rd ruck.

I think he would make a better Ruck than Archie.

Agreed. I said much earlier this year I thought Archie would be moved back to the Rookie list and Big O elevated. I also said we would recruit another ruckman, maybe a project player to learn to play the Steph role. I'm still thinking that way. Eagles started in the ruck late in the season and got great reviews, if they can use Big O in the taps I believe Eagles could fill the gap around the ground and go forward while the 'project' ruckman is developed as a stop gap. Love his aggression.

I would be happy for Eagles as a cat A rookie even if Smith is not picked up by another Club. Great coverage for our defence. Just my opinion but i don't really see him as a 3rd ruck in the seniors even though he filled in occasionally at NEAFL level.
The Club must see something in all of the 4 but by delisting these players it gives them a slim hope of being picked up by another Club.
The Club probably want 4 draft picks and look a losing one of these four players.

Their interest may have been minimal when a trade was involved. Sounds like we're doing him a solid and not too distressed to let him go if he has the option.

My only “issue” with taking an out and out small forward is that we potentially have Cumberland and 2xColeman as academy draftees this year and next.

Small forward won’t exactly be a position of need for us.

Interesting, can’t see Cats using pick 17 but they could. Therefore out of North, Cats and us our second rounder comes first.

If Cooper Stephens gets drafted by Richmond with their first round pick, I can certainly see Rantall getting drafted by one of the teams with a mid 20’s pick.

There genuinely aren’t many inside mids or inside/outside mids in this draft. Kids who would usually go later in previous drafts are being spoken about as first or second round chances.

Teams like Sydney, North, Adelaide and Essendon all need to start drafting mids to build their next midfield, or fill holes.

If we draft a running or medium defender with our first pick, I certainly see Rantall likely being the next best mid on board by our next pick.

Reckon Eagles will stay Cat B as cover for long term injuries in defence, ruck or even attack. Doubt we would get a Cat B as good as him and with 3 years development. If Archie leaves, then maybe a cat A back-up ruck.

I would have no issues with us doubling up and drafting both Cooper Stephens and Rantall. It is evident this year that Fagan likes a more defensive style winger assuming that Cluggs has the more offensive side sewn up for the next decade either these guys could develop into the complimentary half or be inside ball winners in their own right.

I'm backing the club to move on all our mid range picks this year for futures. Would leave us with 16 and 21 and late picks to cover the upgrades and a potential bid on Coleman. Would be nice to have some flexibility with our rookie list rather than having to fill it up with guys moving from the senior list. Happy to grab a young ruck for the future but don't think we need to bring in a mature ruck for cover if we lose Archie. Eagles can provide cover and Ballenden and even Fullerton might benifit from a run in the ruck in reserves if required.

Finding buyers is the difficult part. Just from looking at clubs current and future picks, there don’t look to be to many clubs who might want a late second or mid third pick in this draft, who have the currency to trade out a future pick.

There are quite a few teams who have multiple 4th round picks, who you might think will want to move up, but they won’t want to give up future picks to do so, or they are prohibited from trading future picks, or they could trade a future pick, but won’t be getting perceived fair value in the trade, as they’ll be trading a much earlier future pick for a current later pick.

The other issue, as was highlighted by Cal Twomey in an article last week, clubs look to be taking fewer picks to the draft this year, so there will be a few clubs in the same boat as us, with multiple 3rd or 4th round picks who don’t have the list spots to use them.

Clubs with late picks will know their late picks will move up 10 to 15 spots, if they just wait for final list lodgements, and for clubs like us and Port to lose 3 or 4 3rd and 4th round picks each, while other clubs might lose only 1 or 2 later picks.

I disagree somewhat about the value of a pick in the 8 to 10 range, compared to picks 16 and 21 combined.

Largely because our draft hand is more than just pick 16 and 21. I would rather pick 9, 34, 48 and 52 as our draft hand.

Players available at pick 9 could be Luke Jackson, or Will Gould, or Dylan Stephens, or Brodie Kemp. I’d take any one of those kids, plus a flyer on a kid at 34, than the players in the 16 to 21 range.

Would Melbourne consider a swap of pick 8 for 16, 21 and 52.

I very much doubt it which is my point about paying extreme overs. Would probably take 16, 21, 34 and then some and that wouldn't be a deal I would contemplate. The players you have identified may or may not deliver a better return than our picks 16 and 21. Who knows?.

Yeah, I say we take 16 and 21 to the draft and try and offload 34 and 48 for a pick next year if possible.
Use the later picks for Academy.
