Will Gould has lost some weight after having really high skin folds at the combine

Glenelg premiership defender Will Gould – described as one of the best leaders in this year’s draft pool – has responded to questions about his fitness by shedding 6kg and slashing his skinfold levels in two weeks.
Admitting to being “a bit rusty’’ at the AFL Draft Combine, which was held just nine days after he helped the Tigers break a 33-year league premiership drought, Gould said he had been stung by some “pretty direct instructions’’ in his meeting with Sydney.

Key defender Gould weighed in at the combine at 106kg and recorded skinfold measurements of 78 after a week of celebrating Glenelg’s long-awaited flag.

When he last weighed himself two weeks ago – after he had pulled out of the Tigers’ end-of-season trip to Darwin to focus on his body and the draft – he had dropped to 100kg and his skinfold levels were down to 60.

The Swans had told Gould – SA’s under-18 captain this year – that his skinfolds needed to be measured at 55 or below before a club would draft him.

“There was a little bit of feedback from clubs at the combine,’’ the powerful 18-year-old told The Lowdown AFL Draft Podcast.

Sorry for the intrusion. I have you guys in the bulldogs board mock draft. Am I right to assume you guys will be taking 4 picks to the draft not including the upgrades of big o and hinge. Where would you guys be comfortable matching a bid on Cumberland?

Our third pick.

Keidean Coleman with our fourth pick.

We will only take the 4 live picks to the draft at this stage.
Bids from the mid to late 30’s and later for them 2 should be fine.

Would you rate Noah Cumberland above Keidean Coleman now briz?
My comment isn’t based on me rating draftees at all. Purely from discussions with the draft watchers, particularly those who talk with team recruitment staff.

As an aside, any comments by me about where I might rate draftees should be read with a healthy dose of scepticism.

Wow those skin folds are dreadful. Even 60 is very bad. For a someone looking to have an AFL career I’m astounded.

It's definitely not great but I think the upside he offers as a player definitely off-sets that. Jez McGovern once showed up to pre-season more than 10kg overweight and was apparently able to be lapped by Adam Simpson att raining. Buddy regularly shows up with an extra tire and our own Ash McGrath used to rock up every pre-season sporting a Ninja turtle belly. That he's made efforts and already shed 5kg in a month represents a willingness to improve. I'd happily take the chunky bugger and back him to continue to improve any fitness/body issues once in a full time environment.

He hasn't been discussed as much as Gould or Stephens here, but I really like the look of Trent Rivers. He knows how to kick well and run with the ball out of defence, and his main issue (endurance) is one that can be improved easily at the professional level.

I see none of the potential draftees interviewed in a Fox article (can't give the link) is identified as being Lions supporters. Not yet at least.

Lions have nominated Lachie Johnson for the rookie draft.

If he goes undrafted in the National Draft, we can prelist him to the rookie list. IF we have an available rookie list spot.

Wonder if Archie has an offer elsewhere.
I can't find the Lachie Johnson news anywhere - where did you read/hear this Briztoon?

Does that mean Lachie Johnson is not interested in going to the Bombers via their NGA or is it that the Bombers are not interested in him OR does father/son trump NGAs?

They may nominate him for the actual draft rather than the rookie draft?
Just to trump us.

There’s been some interesting talk in regards to Will Gould.

The Draft Central guys mentioned last night that Will Gould is not rated as high in recruiting circles as he is on Big Footy. Implying Gould probably gets picked in the second round.

Cal Twomey said the same on the AFL’s draft chat video on FB when asked where he sees Gould being drafted. He said early 20’s is the earliest he sees Gould being drafted.

On a separate draft topic.

Does anyone think we might look at a tall defender with one of our first two picks?

A lot of the draft watchers, when doing their Phantom Drafts, are having us pick either a tall forward or tall defender with one of our first 3 picks.

The outside view of our list, since we delisted Josh Walker, is that we’re pretty light on KPP depth.

I will say that I was very underwhelmed by the KPP talent at this years U18 Championships.

Is this low rating related to his fitness issues?

You would think the fitness and skin fold issues would only be a factor if the clubs assessed them as being an indicator of a poor attitude. Even then, if he has the ability interested clubs would back themselves to make an AFL footballer out of him.

No not at all. We’re well stocked for KP youngsters. Payne, Skinner, Ballenden,
Fullerton. Payne and Fullerston KPD and KPF respectively. Both Ballenden and Skinner able to play both ends.

Not a priority for us. Running defenders, wing and midfield are top of the priority list.

Skins fold in the 70’s is an indicator of laziness if you ask me. Even skin folds in the 60’s says enough. It’s not hard at all to bring them down into the 40’s with just a little dedication. I’d say absolutely clubs are viewing it as a poor attitude or lack of discipline.
