I would take those three ahead of Kysaiah Pickett, because I would have no concerns about them competing against similarly sized opponents. Pickett is a full 5cm shorter than Dayne Zorko, and really can only play one position on the field, small forward.

I have stood next to Zorks and he is a couple of cm shorter than me and I am 173 .... the draft numbers are actual measurements as opposed to just asking how tall they are ... (club websites)

But I agree - I dont get all the hype about Pickett. I hope we dont get sucked in.

PS. Just noticed this .... not sure if reported elsewhere

Having pissed on fatboy Gould (even though I like him) I prefer his not-quite-as-fat-boy-mate Schoenberg. Gould will slide way down a slide greased in pig fat. Shoenberg will slide down a little, hopefully just nicely to us ...

And the Lions believe they can strike some gold in what is considered a relatively even talent pool.

“There’s a sentiment this year that a player that might have been picked at no. 15 or 16 could still be there at 21 or 22,’’ Lions general manager of football David Noble said.

“The top grouping is strong. The top two are standouts then there’s another eight or so players that have been earmarked to round out the top 10.

“And after that, there is a large group at the end of the first round and through the second round that is pretty even so it is going to come down to the preferences of each club.

With the fast track at the Gabba in mind, Brisbane will look for players that can skate across halfback or on a wing and hit targets further afield.

“We are looking for some run, some speed and good ball use. You want to bring in guys that play hard and are good at contested ball too so we are looking at players who can play a role in the midfield, across halfback or on a wing.

“Where we are at in the draft, there won’t be any key defenders or key forwards left but we also have to consider that the game is quite quick at the Gabba.’’

Listening to that, just names to throw up are the likes of Jay Rantall who I think they like very much. Josh Honey, Sam Philp, Mitch O’Neill and dare I say it but Jeremy Sharp.

Edit - Trent Rivers is another at our first that I believe they might be interested in.

With such an eloquently put post how could we not respect your opinion.

Cooper Stephens sounds like the kind of player who should be available with our first pick even maybe our second pick and could be a steal. Was highly regarded before getting injured (broken leg) this year. Came back for end of year combine and impressed. Contested player which our recruiters like and suits our current game style. 188cm good size for a mid. Kind of player who can build on his game in the NEAFL for 12/18 months then be ready to attack the big boys. Vic Country lad which suits our recent recruiting narrative.

Agree, I'm really warming to Cooper Stephens, would love him at the Lions unless there is an unexpected highly rated slider who gets to our 1st selection.

He’s in the mix at our first pick. I certainly believe there will be one or maybe two of three midfielders available at our first selection. Trent Rivers, Cooper Stephens and Jay Rantall.

I believe it’s highly unlikely any of them slide to our second pick.

Geelong and Sydney each need to build their next midfield, and hold picks 24 and 25. As well as Adelaide and North each holding two picks between our first two picks, and possibly look at a mid with one of those picks.

From what I’m hearing, Noah Cumberland is looking like a free hit late as a late draft pick, and is a chance to get to the rookie draft.

Geelong has been talking to Kobe Tozer, and are seriously considering Tozer with a rookie pick. Richmond also has some interest in Tozer. A lot will depend on how both clubs go with tall prospects in the National Draft.

It is slowly looking more and more like we will be using 34 as a live pick so one of Coleman or Cumberland could end up elsewhere if they are bid on in the ND and don’t make it to the RD.
But then with the commitment to Lachlan Johnson in the rookie draft I can’t see how we will have a spot for 1 of them anyway?

Gave it a bit of thought while at work yesterday, I would seriously consider moving one or two picks in to next years draft, and picking up a later pick.

The two teams that might be open to trading for another pick this year might be Fremantle and Hawks.

Fremantle are going to carry a 500 to 580 points deficit in to next year, and may not want to see their future first round pick downgraded between 4 and 6 spots.

We could look to trade pick 34 to Fremantle for their future second round pick and pick 69 in this years draft.

I’m guessing those late 4th round picks will move up by as much as 7 spots by the time the 4 main academy and father son kids have been bid on, most likely before our second pick.

The other trade might be with Hawthorn. There’s been a lot of talk that Hawks are offering their 2020 pick for a later first round pick this year.

I’m really struggling to see a team that might trade out a pick in the first round.

It’s possible that a kid they like is still there on the board at our pick 21.

The trade might look like Lions pick 21 + our future 3rd round pick for the Hawks pick 42 and future 1st round pick.

I’d consider both trades, with draft potentially looking like.

Pick 29 (likely moves back to 33)
Pick 42 (moves back to 45)
Pick 69 (moves up to 62-64)
Pick 71 (moves up to 64-66)

Picks 69 and 71 bring in our two academy kids, Keidean Coleman and Noah Cumberland.

Pick 29 could be a best talent left on board or a needs based pick. Elijah Taylor might last till 29. Or we look at kids like Darcy Cassar or Mitch O’Neill.

Pick 42 would likely be a needs based pick. We could look at ruck like Nick Bryan or a HBF/wing like Flynn Perez. Or a kid like Trey Ruscoe from WA, who projects as a tall general defender with the possibility to transition in to a tall midfielder.

Cumberland seems to have athletic potential and speed that suits our needs, but from what I saw of him in the NEAFL I'd be surprised if we pick him. Didn't quite do enough to stand out in that comp and we have ignored academy players in the past that have looked more promising. Conole seemed to emphasize other clubs's interest in him. I think we're more likely to take Coleman with our late pick and by the sound of it, Johnson as a rookie if Archie goes elsewhere. But these are just my hunches and I could easily be wrong.

O'Neill impressed me in his underage year. I believe he had injury issues this year. I think he would be a good get at 29 whether we trade 21 or not. And I think we might be into him as Tasmanian, although we have now shown we can retain anyone.

As an outside observer I am perplexed by the names being linked Melbourne’s two picks at 3 and 10, Luke Jackson and Kozi Pickett. Way overs for both but wait and see.
The Art of War.

Subterfuge and misdirection.

Yeah, I completely agree. Lachlan Ash or Hayden Young at their first pick makes more sense, and Cody Weightman at their second pick. Best KPP left on board at their third.

I hope Ash slides and we make a play for him. I think there's a genuine chance he does, but would imagine us getting him is a little pie in the sky.

So the lions have written off Tozer?

The draft rules have always confused me..... Doh!

Are academy guys that don't get pick up in the National Draft eligible to be picked up by us as Category B rookies? eg. Tozer/Martyn/Wischant. I really liked the look of the little I saw of Wischant or is he in next years crop?

How many more CatBs can we have considering we'll have Madden and Eagles as CatBs in 2020?

It's a strange feeling this year where i haven't cared about the draft as much as I would have in the past. Partially because we haven't had too many debutantes recently, and we have a fair few players yet to make their senior grade debut.

Still will be tuning in Wednesday and Thursday night though, to see who the fresh faces are. Wonder if we will make a play on draft night for a high pick.

As far as I’m aware we’re limited to 44 list spots between the senior list and rookie list. And then 2 Cat B (Madden and Fullerton) rookies who can either be international rookie, from another sport, or an academy kid.

It sounds like we may have been given an extra rookie spot for Matt Eagles.

Our Cat B allocation is full. So to our Cat A allocation if we redraft our delisted free agents we have made a commitment to.

So the lions have written off Tozer?

From the discussions I’ve had, that’s not exactly the case.

Tozer had a few options in front of him.

It was mentioned much earlier in the year that we would offer Tozer an U19 academy position, and I believe there was talk he might also be included in the Allies academy as an overager who missed his draft year due to injury.

Now I’m not up to speed with our academy positions. I don’t know if there’s a financial commitment for the kids and their families, or if the U19’s get a “free ride” so to speak, but don’t earn an income form the club.

Tozer received an invite to the State Combine, so at least 2 clubs expressed an interest in Tozer.

If I was a kid in Tozers’ situation and there was a possibility of being drafted, even in the rookie draft, I would probably take it.

You’ll be employed in a full time capacity, with access to medical and physio professionals at no cost to yourself.

Even for one year, you’ve got the best opportunity to give it a shot, and possibly earn a second and third year in the game.

From the Lions perspective, they’ve offered the kid one option, but have their hands tied in terms of available rookie list spots and not being able to draft Tozer.
